Like the other guy said, the younger kids are using lighter shots. Also, shot put just takes time. I have only been going at it for a year, so I still only do a power throw. I have managed 42 feet, but I do it as one of my events in the decathlon. I am 18 and 165 pounds. Anyway, just keep at it and, with good form, I wouldn't doubt about 50 feet by your senior year.
This makes me feel terrible now I'm a freshman in high school and my best throw at a meet is 38ft 9in, I feel terrible now hearing all these other kids younger than me saying they are throwing 40s
@chrisjohn0324 DUDE being a freshman and throwing 38 FEET? Thats insane! At my school and in my division freshman throw in the 19's and low 20's! I'm a freshman and I throw 25-26 max! How can you feel bad? The VARSITY throwers in my division throw between 38-45!
To everyone here whos a power thrower, don't worry you'll find which form works better for you. I started throwing shotput this year for the first time and I ended up increasing a total of 10 ft over one season just from my technique alone. So you people throwing with a 40s and 50s with a powerstance the glide may add a foot or two to your distance, focus on one thing at a time. *Even though i'm an amateur lol*
As a throwing coach looking for good film to show my glide shot putter, I want to thank you 1000 times over for putting the compilation together. It's absolutely PERFECT.
@TheGinJevv That's what i've been doing and i've been improving quite rapidly. I started this season throwing a 24 and I just hit a 37' 4'' in practice today.
@TheGinJevv its technique, lol. ive dropped down to 200 and maintained most of my strength. i guess i have 3 things i do wrong according to coach and i seem to do one or the other at times.
1. sometimes i dont have a big chest when i release and it goes flat
2. when i land i dont have enough weight on right leg or im bent over with no posture
3. i do this rarely but sometimes i open too soon.
yeah im working hard though so any suggestion tips or drills to help fight some mistakes i do?
Really the spin and glide, not one is better then the other. It's how the thrower throws it. If the thrower can get more speed (that's the most important thing in shot) with the glide, then use the glide. and vice versa with the spin.
im a big guy 216-220lbs, bench 300, power clean 240, squat 385 but i got some speed i actually played a lil bit of runningback for my high school team, and im in a very small league so im not in the level of all you other fucking kids that are juniors and are throwing 45 ft i am barely throwing 43ft on shot and 125 on disk.
but my question: is the spin for guys who are more explosive and have acceleration while glide is for more power guys?
ok heres my situation im currenty in the 11the grade and am throwing 38ft. Is there any advice anyone can give me to help me improve my distance because state automatic qualifications are 47 ft... help please...
@heavysixer77 30ft ain't bad but most champion throwers (depending on your area/conference/state) are throwing above 35ft as a 9th grader and about 40ft as a 10th grader, but a lot of hardwork in the weightroom can change make the difference. It doesn't matter whether you glide or spin cause they are both every effective. Glide is generally more consistent, but spin requires less strength but more time practicing form. GOOD LUCK!!!
@connorlav practice keeping your push leg down more when you glide. That way your foot will hit inside the block instead of ontop of it. Just keep your leg and your push lower. I had the same problem, not too hard to fix
After watching this, Im glad in knowing my technique resembles at least one of these guys (Udo Beyer).
I just REALLY need to work on the speed and power in my right leg. Im not putting in enough Umph to be reversing yet, but when I do it will be quite a sight to behold for me :)
@LetGo201 Nick does lift weights and he hit a PR by a foot last spring...He also went up like 7 feet from freshman to sophomore year, and he will PR by quite a bit again this year

THere's only so much that a gym workout will tell you about brute strength. Carter's size will tell you about his strength. He had the speed and experience as well. For nick to be 10ft behind is a helluva
@Metalr0ck3r accomplishment. I see him passing 72 but just a tad. Maybe 73 or 75 to top off his career but a 10 foot jump is not in the cards. Especially when your form is as flawless and smooth as nick's. Nick as 9th grade, 10th grade and 11th grade records I believe, carter having the 12th grade record just gives him good company. beside, nick doesnt seem to want it that much, he's done it all.
I think its easy to see where ulf gets his angles from. His head comes back very far so he exploses his chest more than the other guys (so does gunthor).
@langlangbestur yup he does. You're not the only one who thinks he has shit technique lol. Ulf timmerman said so him self. He said his tech was good from 75-1980, it went down from there.
well his techinque was actually designed specifically for him. since he had a massive back squat he used what is called a short long glide. doesn't glide far acrossed the ring but he has wide stands so he can get his huge squat into the shot put. his left foot goes high in the air but he actually gets it down fast enough to were he can get some good velocity into the shot. ulf timmermann use a very similar techinque to beyer.
I have no idea how he gets off good throws with that, his left leg is like the glide version of adam nelsons. Me personally I Need both of my feet on the ground before pushing or else I'll feel off balance. He probably did it soo many times that he was still effective. Odo had bad technique to me though, he was just really strong more so than timermann.
unless you have massive back squat and bench like him i wouldn't copy his tehinque. his techinque is designed to use his freakish strength and not very techinquically. micheal carther, ulf ,brenner and gunthor have better techinque
pearl groove u r an idiot you want your front foot straight so that you have hip power if the foot isnt straight then your not getting your true potential for your throw.mike carter is just amazing still
lol, nahh chuck. Imagine the circle as clock. You start with the toes pointing straight out (12 oclock) then glide back and turn your right foot at 9 o'clock (hence touch down at 9) .
if the foot is straight the right hip gets left behind and the upper body is forced to do more work than it should. You want at least some preturn so that the hips can really run ahead and create a catapult effect over the blocked left. Fuebach and Carter both threw 72' with this technique. Hopelfully your response will not include name calling.
I must say that of all these guys Werner is superior... at this particular meet. He was in great shape and his performance proves it. Ulf was not transfering well in the middle, Alessandro is just a beast, Udo is an ungodly beast, Laut is unreal!!! A really cool thing to notice is that Carter is the only guy who actually concentrates on really pre-turning the right foot in the middle in the same manner as Fuerbach.
Yes, it tells me that you have 300 million people and a high budget towards athletics... we have... 30 million people?
I'm sorry that you get so riled up about this, but I'm a pretty proud Canadian :) , I'm movin' down to the u.s. next year on a track scholarship, I have a high respect for u.s. athletics.... just not shits like you
no actually the u.s. won, even though they (europe) won 11 throwing medals the u.s. still won the track and field portion of the olympics, its not all about the throwers its about the team.
yo all americans, stop making dumbass comments on the canadians, im a dual american citizen, so americans really shut the fuck up, and let him talk without starting to call him shit. Assholes
lol, lets pretend that 45 by a sophomore isnt a good throw. and besides, no one gives a damn about the word shuffle. Its you're either gliding or you're going.
ok #1. the guy asked "how heavy is the ball for canadian high scool throwers"
#2. I never said I was any good, but we do have some good atheletes. Jason tunks for example is a 66-67m disc thrower. Dylan armtrstrong is a 21m shotputter, Scott russel is an 85m jav thrower, and Jim Steacy is a 80m hammer thrower. So check out your facts before u start making dumbass american comments like that. All the other countries expect it of you americans of course, but try to tone it down a bit
Unless you count all your silver and bronzes, you didn't win, but good try.
On the topic of track and field, how'd all your athletes do :) . We were thrilled to see Dylan in the top 5 and have all our throwers in the finals, it's a step forward for Canadian athletics.
but man that Tyson Gay! he was somethin special this olympics eeehhhh
haha look at you, so protective over the American reputation that you go rippin' it up on youtube!
Have I ever competed in a track meet? Absolutely, it's my life. If you read my message like a non-ignorant fuck that you are, you'd see that I said we were proud of our progress in track and field, compared to the past, many could say it was a dissapointing year for the U.S.
you have more population in the U.S then most of any other countries in the world...You cannot say your better when you have more to choose from then most countries. you could not expect a country with a couple million in population to achieve highly, the numbers just dont exist.
Man, everyone stop fighting it is not how strong you are, technique will ALWAYS win over brute strength, me and my friend have been spending all spring break working our asses off to make our release perfect and to get a better kick with out glide and we are FINALLY hitting 45 with the 12 (As sophmores) but we worked our ASS OFF for a week we started with our PR's at around 38 feet. So just work hard and you will get MUCH better.
why all the fights on who can throw a heavier shoht , or farther ??/ i think its just good to have fun and try to do your best , i think people sould ooffer advise on technique , because im just learning now
I threw last year (grade 9) 13.5m with a high school weight, this year Im gonna try to break the 15 meters, it's funny how last year was the first time I ever even saw a shotput and I got to city finals lol
alecrayan sounds like a kid at my school. there is this guy from fountain hills in arizona who can shot the shit out of a shot. lol me not so much, i never could glide very well, when i figured it out though i started throwing well. i think if you really want to do well though you gonna do a good spin, a perfect spin is better than a perfect glide. in my opinion. also if you're in high school and throwing an 8 lb shot, then you're a girl, cause thats a girls shot.
i believe that u can throw a 16lb 30 feet. I am a sophomore in HS and this is my first year throwing and i can hit around 40 with a 12lb and around 37 with a 14lb
despite both being rotational, the shot put spin is extremely different from the discus. in the shot, you swing your leg as wide as you can to generate power and your following leg ends up having to come up or else you lose control. In the discus, you need to keep your first leg in tight to generate speed and you have to keep your following leg low to the ground to keep your balance. The shot spin is based on instability while the discus is focused on balance.
Think of it like this; how many shotputters that spin, and also throw discus, ever had really good international success. Godina never medaled in discus, Smith's personal best in shot is way more respectable. I'm not saying that you shouldn't spin in both necessarily, just if you primarily want to be a discus thrower. that's what i meant by my earlier comment
30 with a 16 is not incredible unbelievabe. I throw 35 with a 14 and 45 with a 12. I'm not allowed to throw an 8.8 but the few times i did it went upper 50's to 60. those stats are average.
its funny cuz i threw a 12 pounder 43' and an 8 pounder i hurt myself throwing it like 54'3"1/2"... its very annoying id be a beastie girl shotputter tho... :D
it may look simple, but the glide is an extremely technical style, maybe more than spinning. im tired of hearing people say the spin is more technical. in the glide, you have to move around the shot to get behind it, instead of spinning the shot around you. Timmerman is one the greatest technicians of Athletics ever.
he guys i have a question. i have a heart problem but im one of the best thowers in my area because of my tech. i wondering if u guys had ideas for me to pick up my speed and streengh
I would include in this video Al too. I don`t know exactly who is the best glider, but according to his physical apttitudes Al is great. And Timmermann have movements that nobody else have.
@chrisjohn0324

beasty41 2 years ago
lol, lets pretend that 45 by a sophomore isnt a good throw. and besides, no one gives a damn about the word shuffle. Its you're either gliding or you're going.

for gr 9's (fresh) its 8.8 (4k)
for gr 10's its the same
and 11's and 12's are 5.5 (12lb)
guitar69legend 2 years ago
umm actually its a 12lb for 9-12 unless your a scrub and have to throw with the junior high.
I've been throwing the 12 since last year (freshman year) and im a cophomore now and still throwin it not a 4k
still poppin out fifties though so no worries
manosis 2 years ago
in canada? no, u throw 4k for 9's and
10's, and 11 and 12's throw the 5.5k
and btw no cares what u throw! so theres no need to tell everyone over utube
guitar69legend 2 years ago
haha
canada
manosis 2 years ago
and what do you throw, like 35?
because Canada is just the place to be for sports huh.
unless were talking gsp, there's no outstanding athletes even from Canada.
manosis 2 years ago
ok #1. the guy asked "how heavy is the ball for canadian high scool throwers"
All the other countries expect it of you americans of course, but try to tone it down a bit

really now?
And just how did canada do in the olympics this year?
Not sayin you suck but you didnt even get in the top 5.
USA kinda finished 1st.
Good job tying for dead last though.
manosis 2 years ago
AMERICAN = 1 Canadian = as usual.....0 = LAST
bigsixty606060 2 years ago
Amen brother!
We're just better than them and it makes 'em mad.
Poor little canadians.
manosis 2 years ago
Unless you count all your silver and bronzes, you didn't win, but good try.
On the topic of track and field, how'd all your athletes do :) . We were thrilled to see Dylan in the top 5 and have all our throwers in the finals, it's a step forward for Canadian athletics.
but man that Tyson Gay! he was somethin special this olympics eeehhhh
twillcox 2 years ago
you canadians really are idiots, you get points for every time you place, and we placed more poeple over all than anyone.
look it up anywhere.
we KILLED YALL.
By a good clean mile.
And ended up winning the track and field portion of the olympics over all.
HAVE YOU EVER COMPETED IN A MEET?
Obviously not or you would know that every place gets points, which we did more than anyone else. PLACED.
Yall had one medal? A bronze i believe.
Definitely a step forward in canadian athletics, good job cunt.
manosis 2 years ago
haha look at you, so protective over the American reputation that you go rippin' it up on youtube!
Have I ever competed in a track meet? Absolutely, it's my life. If you read my message like a non-ignorant fuck that you are, you'd see that I said we were proud of our progress in track and field, compared to the past, many could say it was a dissapointing year for the U.S.
twillcox 2 years ago
a disappointing year and we still dominated
tells ya something now doesnt it?
manosis 2 years ago
you have more population in the U.S then most of any other countries in the world...You cannot say your better when you have more to choose from then most countries. you could not expect a country with a couple million in population to achieve highly, the numbers just dont exist.

llennroy 2 years ago
Man, everyone stop fighting it is not how strong you are, technique will ALWAYS win over brute strength, me and my friend have been spending all spring break working our asses off to make our release perfect and to get a better kick with out glide and we are FINALLY hitting 45 with the 12 (As sophmores) but we worked our ASS OFF for a week we started with our PR's at around 38 feet. So just work hard and you will get MUCH better.
duskhunter 2 years ago
i hit 45'8 this afternoon. soph as well or else it wouldnt matter

why all the fights on who can throw a heavier shoht , or farther ??/ i think its just good to have fun and try to do your best , i think people sould ooffer advise on technique , because im just learning now

Why the fuck is Ulf Timmermann #5 when he is the greatest thrower of all time?

I threw last year (grade 9) 13.5m with a high school weight, this year Im gonna try to break the 15 meters, it's funny how last year was the first time I ever even saw a shotput and I got to city finals lol
TheGODofThe15Era 2 years ago
wtf u retards the highschool shot weight is 12 lbs god ur stupid and weak
metalhealth56 2 years ago
alecrayan sounds like a kid at my school. there is this guy from fountain hills in arizona who can shot the shit out of a shot. lol me not so much, i never could glide very well, when i figured it out though i started throwing well. i think if you really want to do well though you gonna do a good spin, a perfect spin is better than a perfect glide. in my opinion. also if you're in high school and throwing an 8 lb shot, then you're a girl, cause thats a girls shot.
GodPirate 2 years ago
Man, these men are manly.
shotputman7 2 years ago
wow. you guys make me look horrible. i'm in 11th and i only throw like. 25ish feet in shot. rofl
my problem is that i don't turn my hips enough, besides, my thing is disc and jav, not shot lol
rodzinka7 2 years ago
Eh,
Today in practice I threw a 36'8"
I'm 13
chaarlietheunicorn 2 years ago
how heavy was the ball?
torimack2008 2 years ago
8.8lbs regular 7th grade
chaarlietheunicorn 2 years ago
i somehow seriously doubt that. im 14 and in high school we use 8.8 and im only throwing 40.
torimack2008 2 years ago
your just weak is all
llennroy 2 years ago
im just weak is all? baby im 3rd in texas dont do me.
torimack2008 2 years ago
That's pretty good
I'm a sophmore in highschool and my PR is 51' 9"

Stmathews51 2 years ago
i believe that u can throw a 16lb 30 feet. I am a sophomore in HS and this is my first year throwing and i can hit around 40 with a 12lb and around 37 with a 14lb
alecryan14 2 years ago
i would never recommend spinning in the shot put to someone who also throws discus though.
Raikage100 2 years ago
why?
rketer 2 years ago
despite both being rotational, the shot put spin is extremely different from the discus. in the shot, you swing your leg as wide as you can to generate power and your following leg ends up having to come up or else you lose control. In the discus, you need to keep your first leg in tight to generate speed and you have to keep your following leg low to the ground to keep your balance. The shot spin is based on instability while the discus is focused on balance.
Raikage100 2 years ago
Think of it like this; how many shotputters that spin, and also throw discus, ever had really good international success. Godina never medaled in discus, Smith's personal best in shot is way more respectable. I'm not saying that you shouldn't spin in both necessarily, just if you primarily want to be a discus thrower. that's what i meant by my earlier comment
Raikage100 2 years ago
rotational techinque is better in the hands of the right athlete.
cdeavellar 2 years ago
At 3:15 ish Beyer could have throw so much farther but he was dead with his left leg and started throwing before he grounded it....amazing
brownie6524 3 years ago
that's part of Beyer's usual technique, it is unique to say the least
Raikage100 3 years ago
it's just weird but he has great acceleration from his hips and how he keeps his shoulders back for so long
brownie6524 3 years ago
all technique starts with the basic, stereotypical technique, and then evolves differently in each athlete
Raikage100 2 years ago
...i think the glide technique is so effective than the spin technique..
HitokiriYamano 3 years ago
i dont think so. i find i get much more power from the spin then i do the glide
cdeavellar 3 years ago
more power from the glide, more speed from the spin.
llennroy 2 years ago
wow i'm 6ft 2 and not bulky at all and my best is 35ft *__* nothing compared to these throwers.
gjgvffcbdfvxfgbjnkmk 3 years ago
I'm a high school sophomore. I threw roughly 30 with a 16.
llennroy 2 years ago
i highly doubt that you throw a 16lb shot 30 feet unless you're a ridiculously huge Sophomore
regrahC69samohT 2 years ago
30 with a 16 is not incredible unbelievabe. I throw 35 with a 14 and 45 with a 12. I'm not allowed to throw an 8.8 but the few times i did it went upper 50's to 60. those stats are average.
llennroy 2 years ago
im small i threw the 16lb about 35 as a sophmore
slashix345 2 years ago
i threw the 16 exactly 40 yesterday. i work better with heavy shots.
llennroy 2 years ago
i threw it 40 ft and im a freshmn
yorkie4life2 2 years ago
with a 16lbs? I throw 48 with a 12 and 50 (maybe 60 is pushing it) with the old freshman shot
llennroy 2 years ago
its funny cuz i threw a 12 pounder 43' and an 8 pounder i hurt myself throwing it like 54'3"1/2"... its very annoying id be a beastie girl shotputter tho... :D
yorkie4life2 2 years ago
48meterssss!!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?
taneeitude 2 years ago
no1 gives a fuck go brag somewhere else
bling1800 2 years ago
it may look simple, but the glide is an extremely technical style, maybe more than spinning. im tired of hearing people say the spin is more technical. in the glide, you have to move around the shot to get behind it, instead of spinning the shot around you. Timmerman is one the greatest technicians of Athletics ever.
Raikage100 3 years ago 2
man, I'm on the track and field team and I play on the shot put and discus unit and I hope I might be great just like those true gliders!
VREB4EVER 3 years ago 3
interesting how Beyer took sixth in 87 Rome with 21.13, which would've got silver in Beijing. these men are on an entire different level
Raikage100 3 years ago
he guys i have a question. i have a heart problem but im one of the best thowers in my area because of my tech. i wondering if u guys had ideas for me to pick up my speed and streengh
bigjm4 3 years ago
we cant help improve if we dont have an idea how good you are
llennroy 3 years ago
lift weights and sprint
llennroy 2 years ago
Feuerbach was only barely 6ft. tall. for that height, 71'5" is great. even 2 more inches of height coul've added 2 or 3 feet to his throws
Raikage100 3 years ago
I would include in this video Al too. I don`t know exactly who is the best glider, but according to his physical apttitudes Al is great. And Timmermann have movements that nobody else have.
ririceh 3 years ago
timmermann was the best glider ever. what you smoking. al feuerbach, i give break. he is good but he is not in timmermann league.
cdeavellar 3 years ago
omggg where's al?! al feuerbach has the best glide ever, not these guys! Plus beyer wasnt that good, he hung his left leg
Opie852 3 years ago
with 2years i throw 11.4m is this good?X-D jaja...8pound? in school we use 16pound and we have to throw 8.50m for the best mark
