@WanderlustX2 Melody is married??? Lets try was married.... The best thing she did was divorce that fool. Thier's a few thing's a man should never do. To cross the line and do it to Ronnie's daughter. Should be a bounty on his head. either way. it dont matter. just like back in the wild west
@Southernborn761 I don't personally know either of them, so if they're divorced, that's unfortunate. I don't know either of them personally or heard any "rumors" so I don't know. Maybe you have inside information and good for you.
he didnt take over after ronnies death.this song was 12 years later?so was at least that long?they did rossington collins few years after ronniie died way before this.
Grew up in Rhode Island with my older brothers playing Skynyrd. Great band. Having lived in Jacksonville now for the last 7 years it's cool too see the areas where they got started. They're like the Led Zeppelin of southern rock. But I never heard this song. I know I'll get crucified for this, but for me ... this song is ok. If he wasn't Ronnie and Donnie's brother, I just dont think it would have gotten much recognition. It's very typical. Go ahead and kill me now ...
@CrappyApple001 well i wouldn't run ya down..i would say i dont agree..its a great song man..we all have different ears is all..its a well wrote out, well played, southern rock ballad..its great to me..i think of all my buddy's that have gone..and its alot! when i hear this song...just sayin...
I'm 46 now but they were and still are one of my favorite bands ever. I get teary eyed every time I listen to it or watch the video. Ronnie's Heart will always be close to all of us.
i remember sitting on that dock drinking beer and partying as a teenager, while Ralph and Clara, the people who owned the fishcamp fought like cats and dogs lol Had lots of fun there.
not too big of a town here in chanute tennesse, but this song really brought people together when me and my band played it for a memorial service for a guy in our highschool who died
Reminds me of sitting around an old chassis in Relic's backyard with a fire going and sinking a few Southern Comforts, singing to all the music tunelessly as hell, but what the hell, we enjoyed ourselves !! Long live Lynard Skynard in our hearts ..
me too got them right now.reminds me of me and my 2 best freinds growing up fishing hunting raising hell.the part that says a little meoldy drags along thier was on with us and still is.long live lynard skynard
i love this song. it gives me chills. i especially love the bridge of the song. i just saw Ronnie and Johnny's brother Donnie's band "38 Special" last night. he did "Rebel to Rebel" as a tribute to Ronnie. Amazing talent in that family.
i got a brother... i got three actually we are four brothers. but im closest with my little brother, when i hear this, it makes me think about if i lost my little brother or if he lost me. brings tears to my eyes if i lost my best friend. we lost our father because of suicide so our bond is closer. if i lost him i would have nobody... we always watch each others backs.
Thank you so much for posting this song. My brother commited suicide recently, and I haven't been able to get this out of my head ever since. It helps me to sing it at the top of my lungs when I feel like I'm going crazy.

I'm 16 watching this, my dad brought me up to love Skynyrd, It breaks my heart I never got to see Ronnie and the boys play live, but i have seen the current band 6 times, 8 by the end of the summer. They did more in, 7 years or so than anyone has ever done. They would've been one of the greatest if that plane hadn't gone down. I will say that the post-70's Skynyrd has made some great music and they don't get credit for it. Like Red Whit and Blue, Edge Of Forever, and the God & Guns album
I spent many days on Brickyard road, my best friend lived across the tracks on the right.. Ronnie lived across the the tracks on the left. It's paved now. I guess the Lord took Ronnie before the concrete came. God bless Johnny and we'll never forget Ronne.
I remember when this went down and it was tragic and so very sad. They were such a great band and their songs or rather Ronnie's songs are still popular. I think Gary Rossington is the only one still alive. Everyone else has gone on. Ronnie, Bill Gains, Billy Powell, JoJo, Cassie, Collins (I can't remember his fist name)
@nmk1226 Allen Collins, and its steve gaines, Ronnie was one of the greatest and still is, i think Johnny and the rest of Skynyrd don't get enough credit, they have made some amazing songs since Ronnie died, Ex] Red, White, and Blue, The Last Rebel, Rough around the edges, and The God & Guns album. Gifted hands is a hell of a song

I remember seeing the Van-Zant brothers singing this song live in Atlanta, Ga. & they had changed the words from (Mama & Daddy's doing alright), to (Mama's in heaven, Daddy's alright, I saw Melody last Sat. night... me & my husband looked @ each other & said "Their mom died!" then burst into tears!
I think of the people that i have Loved & Lost when i hear this song ! Oh what Great memories ! I absolutely Love this song it just sends chills down my spine everytime i hear it .
I live in Orange Park, FL less than a mile from the cemetery where Ronnie is laid to rest. Back in 97 I used to work in a bar that hosted the annual Freebird Reunion. It was amazing to see the number of people that came from around the world to be a part. People from Europe & Asia. There were a few Japanese folks that hitchhiked from the airport to the hotel (roughly 35 miles) because they spent all their money in air-fare and lodging or something to that effect. Amazing tribute!
I am so damn proud to be from the South, and had the privelage of seeing the very first Skynyrd reunion concert.God Bless the entire Vanzant family.Thank's to Johnny for stepping up into a giant pair boot's to fill. You have succeded beyond any of our expectations.Rock on my friend.
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, and I should know, I've heard a few...
Johnny is one of the best sad song writers ever born... I love this song forever, it also remembers me of someone I've lost. It brings tears to my eyes, really. Beautiful piece of art. One of the best southern songs of all times, in my opinion.

i lost my big brother & when i listen to this song i feel like hes here with me. gives me the chills everytime i love you big bro keep looking down on me & the family
I love how Lacy Van Zant (Their father) is in the video. I had the great pleasure of visiting Ronnie's grave in Jacksonville in 2001. The inscription of Charlie Daniel's quote on the bench is heart wrenching. Fly high Free Bird. You are immortal in our hearts and your songs.
hell yeah i grew up here went to high school with melodie lived a few houses down from the video shoot was there the day of got pics and auto graphs was a cool day for sure
This song has always got me through some rough times plus its also an awesome song. There have been times when I wanted to cry during this song but i couldn't get the tears to come out. I love all Southern Rock bands and this one of my favorite ballads of all time.
fantastic way to pay tribute to his brother......mom,dad,and his youngest daughter in the video great job johnny..................keep the music going...................
I know how he feels I lost my little brother, may 7th 2009,only 27 years old sunday oct 10 is his birthday, I know I cant bring back yesterday but Lord I pray to be with you again some day,,
To this day....Every time I hear this song, it makes the hair stand up, brings a tear to my eye, and makes me stop, whatever I am doing, to just sit and remember. Ronnie, carry on in peace. Gone but NEVER forgotten.
Just lost my cousin this weekend to a Drunk Driver. This song and Freebird were the first to come to mind. Thanks for the music that we can relate to in real life. We love our SKYNYRD.
I was never a Skynyrd fan but still when he gets to the part about "Momma and daddy's doing alright, I saw Melody last Saturday night, she's all grown up, she's such a pretty girl, just aint the same since you left the world" You can see the emotion he is going through. Great song!
I AM FROM PITTSBURGH---WENT TO A REUNION IN JAX.. SPENT THE DAY SAT LOOKING FOR BRICKYARD ROAD TO PAY MY RESPECTS ALONE--BEEN A LIFETIME GOAL OF MINE----WELL I FOUND IT---MADE ME FEEL GOOD---I WAS IN JAX WHEN THE BAND WAS NOT FAMOUS YET----STILL HURTS
I played this song for 3 friends of mine that died in a car accident - July 4th, 1990. Our junior year year. We posted this song in our yearbook as a tribute. Lost but NEVER forgotten, Love you Mike Baker, Robbie Stubbs and Chad Young ! R I P ! As will Ronnie ! Only The Good Die Young ! Miss Ya'll and LOVE you even more - See ya'll soon. - Kasper
I want to dedicate this to my father on Father's Day. He's been gone 15 years now but the pain is still as bad as the day I lost my best friend. He made me the man I am today and I hope I'm half as good as he is.
@jkasper000420 Thank you so much. I ache for your loss 20 years ago. I can tell you are a fine human being and I appreciate your comments so much.-----Jack
one more comment, alot of people remember dale earnhardt by this song. they played it in indianapolis on the radio as a dedication to him. alot of people called in and said the song was perfect for that dedication.
i lovvvve this song...........love to just sit and listen to it. remember when it first came out. catine is our daughter lol. our 14yr old, listened to this the other day, and loved it too. gotta share this stuff with our kids. they love it. not like what our parents made us endure. no... :)
I love all the great comments about this great song. It's going on 33 years since the plane went down.I visited Brickyard Rd. after my first Simple Man cruise.I got so emotional. When I came home and played this video,I lost it.I am tearing as I write.I love everyone who loves LYNYRD SKYNYRD.I also in the same day I went down Brickyard Rd,I visited Ronnie's memorial played Freebird while playing my harmonica.I never cried so haed while playing that song. That was the number 1 thing on my bucketlist
@sczesny46056 I cry every time I hear this song. ...It's not fair! It just isn't fair...
I love how Johnny paid tribute to his brother by referencing "Free Bird" and either "Tuesday's Gone" ("Train roll on, on down the line...") or Ronnie's famous (hunting) whistle ("That Smell") or possibly both.
By the way, whoever desecrated Ronnie's grave the first time around should hang for it!
I plan on visiting Brickyard Road in Jacksonville, FL to pay my condolences on the 35th anniversary in 2012.
Five years ago today (May 12th) I lost my first child because of her father. This song hits home to me every time I hear it. Reminds me of my daughter.... I miss you Savannah!!! This song has touched so many hearts .................. and the tears continue to flow.....
Had a friend get killed by an 18 wheeler on the side of the interstate after his car broke down back in 88. This song makes me think of him everytime I hear it.
@kissnguns God does not let us go through anything we can not handle.... When the waves crash to high upon the shores the will pick you up and carry you! I know what it is like losing somebody. Tho I lost my daughter. May 12th... was 5 years ago I lost her....and it still stings to this day.... but God has brough me through it!!! And God will bring you through it as well. Keep your chin up and remember that God loves you!!!!
Happy birthday Johnny. (52)

This song has always got me through some rough times plus its also an awesome song. There have been times when I wanted to cry during this song but i couldn't get the tears to come out. I love all Southern Rock bands and this one of my favorite ballads of all time.

To this day....Every time I hear this song, it makes the hair stand up, brings a tear to my eye, and makes me stop, whatever I am doing, to just sit and remember. Ronnie, carry on in peace. Gone but NEVER forgotten.

I was never a Skynyrd fan but still when he gets to the part about "Momma and daddy's doing alright, I saw Melody last Saturday night, she's all grown up, she's such a pretty girl, just aint the same since you left the world" You can see the emotion he is going through. Great song!

I want to dedicate this to my father on Father's Day. He's been gone 15 years now but the pain is still as bad as the day I lost my best friend. He made me the man I am today and I hope I'm half as good as he is.

one more comment, alot of people remember dale earnhardt by this song. they played it in indianapolis on the radio as a dedication to him. alot of people called in and said the song was perfect for that dedication.

@sczesny46056 Agreed. The atmosphere of this song remembers me "Blame it On a Sad Song", recorded in 1997, in th album "Twenty" by Skynyrd...
