  • Happy birthday Johnny. (52)

  • it's 2012 i didn't know it mattered what year it was nobody told me you could not like something after a point of time

  • The missing thing, Melody is married to the guitarist for Shinedown, who covered Simple Man.

  • @WanderlustX2 Wow!

  • @WanderlustX2 Melody is married??? Lets try was married.... The best thing she did was divorce that fool. Thier's a few thing's a man should never do. To cross the line and do it to Ronnie's daughter. Should be a bounty on his head. either way. it dont matter. just like back in the wild west

  • @Southernborn761 I don't personally know either of them, so if they're divorced, that's unfortunate. I don't know either of them personally or heard any "rumors" so I don't know. Maybe you have inside information and good for you.

  • makes me cry..

  • me in a song,my first car 55 chev,takes me back home.

  • he didnt take over after ronnies death.this song was 12 years later?so was at least that long?they did rossington collins few years after ronniie died way before this.

  • Grew up in Rhode Island with my older brothers playing Skynyrd. Great band. Having lived in Jacksonville now for the last 7 years it's cool too see the areas where they got started. They're like the Led Zeppelin of southern rock. But I never heard this song. I know I'll get crucified for this, but for me ... this song is ok. If he wasn't Ronnie and Donnie's brother, I just dont think it would have gotten much recognition. It's very typical. Go ahead and kill me now ...

  • @CrappyApple001 well i wouldn't run ya down..i would say i dont agree..its a great song man..we all have different ears is all..its a well wrote out, well played, southern rock ballad..its great to me..i think of all my buddy's that have gone..and its alot! when i hear this song...just sayin...

  • your wrong this is about ronniie, donnie and johnny who were from jax. fla.

  • I love this song my best friend died 15 years ago and she loved this song and when i listen to this song it makes me cry.but good song

  • I'm 46 now but they were and still are one of my favorite bands ever. I get teary eyed every time I listen to it or watch the video. Ronnie's Heart will always be close to all of us.

  • Another fact for you...... In reference to "Freebird". The song Freebird was wrote for Duane Allman from the Allman Brothers.

  • MY dad seen them 1974 Ronnie Vanzant baref

    oot on stage (08-1974)

  • I have seen the real thing 1974 charleston sc ronny baer foot on stage.

  • i remember sitting on that dock drinking beer and partying as a teenager, while Ralph and Clara, the people who owned the fishcamp fought like cats and dogs lol Had lots of fun there.

  • not too big of a town here in chanute tennesse, but this song really brought people together when me and my band played it for a memorial service for a guy in our highschool who died

  • @365possumboy loves tennessee, what a beautiful place.

  • whos face is that at o.42 secs?

  • @ddavey68 its Melody

  • @ddavey68 Yes, I named my lil girl after her. She's 18 now and I just put it on her fb. I haven't seen a pic of Ronnie's Melody, but would love to.

  • @ddavey68 idk but its kinda creepy

  • wow. I just have to say for someone living with a lot of loss I love this

  • Reminds me of sitting around an old chassis in Relic's backyard with a fire going and sinking a few Southern Comforts, singing to all the music tunelessly as hell, but what the hell, we enjoyed ourselves !! Long live Lynard Skynard in our hearts ..

  • me too got them right now.reminds me of me and my 2 best freinds growing up fishing hunting raising hell.the part that says a little meoldy drags along thier was on with us and still is.long live lynard skynard

  • God Bless!!

  • i love this song. it gives me chills. i especially love the bridge of the song. i just saw Ronnie and Johnny's brother Donnie's band "38 Special" last night. he did "Rebel to Rebel" as a tribute to Ronnie. Amazing talent in that family.

  • the lead guitar player here is a friend of mine - hi, erik-

  • i got a brother... i got three actually we are four brothers. but im closest with my little brother, when i hear this, it makes me think about if i lost my little brother or if he lost me. brings tears to my eyes if i lost my best friend. we lost our father because of suicide so our bond is closer. if i lost him i would have nobody... we always watch each others backs.

  • Thank you so much for posting this song. My brother commited suicide recently, and I haven't been able to get this out of my head ever since. It helps me to sing it at the top of my lungs when I feel like I'm going crazy.

  • THANK YOU,for this song...you hv touched our lifes as well

  • This one goes out to my brother, who passed in auto accident...and also his son years later just after graduating high school...always hits home:(

  • 0 dislikes. Fuck yeah.

  • Oh man, I have never once been able to listen to this song without it bringing me to tears, and this video hits me even harder!

Rest in peace, Ronnie. As long as people love your music, your spirit will never truly be gone!

Johnny, this is a wonderful way to pay homage to your family and their legacy. Ronnie couldn't have had a better tribute!

  • i remember the first time i heard this song i saw the video on vh1(of all places) as i was getting for work...i stopped, i watched, and i was sooooo moved...just beautiful. i choke up everytime i hear this song.........

  • THAT HAD TO BE HARD TO DO GOD BLESS THEM ALL

  • Moving home to Jax next week. I can't wait to get home to that Southern Hospitality! Love all you Free Birds!

  • I'm 16 watching this, my dad brought me up to love Skynyrd, It breaks my heart I never got to see Ronnie and the boys play live, but i have seen the current band 6 times, 8 by the end of the summer. They did more in, 7 years or so than anyone has ever done. They would've been one of the greatest if that plane hadn't gone down. I will say that the post-70's Skynyrd has made some great music and they don't get credit for it. Like Red Whit and Blue, Edge Of Forever, and the God & Guns album

  • @Alton2013 kid rock inducted them into the hall of fame

  • I spent many days on Brickyard road, my best friend lived across the tracks on the right.. Ronnie lived across the the tracks on the left. It's paved now. I guess the Lord took Ronnie before the concrete came. God bless Johnny and we'll never forget Ronne.

  • I remember when this went down and it was tragic and so very sad. They were such a great band and their songs or rather Ronnie's songs are still popular. I think Gary Rossington is the only one still alive. Everyone else has gone on. Ronnie, Bill Gains, Billy Powell, JoJo, Cassie, Collins (I can't remember his fist name)

  • @nmk1226 Allen Collins, and its steve gaines, Ronnie was one of the greatest and still is, i think Johnny and the rest of Skynyrd don't get enough credit, they have made some amazing songs since Ronnie died, Ex] Red, White, and Blue, The Last Rebel, Rough around the edges, and The God & Guns album. Gifted hands is a hell of a song

  • I remember when this went down and it was tragic and so very sad. They were such a great band and their songs or rather Ronnie's songs are still popular. I think Gary Rossington is the only one still alive. Everyone else has gone on. Ronnie, Bill Gains, Billy Powell, JoJo, Cassie, Colling (I can't remember his fist name)

  • this song has always made me cry. love you guys

  • I remember the brick yard road....

  • Its so sad that it takes losing some one to bring beautiful music from people .

This is a beautiful song love it. Lost my big brother to a Taliban bullet . I cried

so hard . Thank you Johnny

  • Kudos to Johnny and the band for writing and recording this. AWESOME JOB!!!! Ronnie would be proud..!!!

  • The real Brickyard Road is in orange park too.

  • I think of the people that i have Loved & Lost when i hear this song ! Oh what Great memories ! I absolutely Love this song it just sends chills down my spine everytime i hear it .

  • chuck norris did great in this video

  • i took a pictur with him at my local publix...lol

  • I live in Orange Park, FL less than a mile from the cemetery where Ronnie is laid to rest. Back in 97 I used to work in a bar that hosted the annual Freebird Reunion. It was amazing to see the number of people that came from around the world to be a part. People from Europe & Asia. There were a few Japanese folks that hitchhiked from the airport to the hotel (roughly 35 miles) because they spent all their money in air-fare and lodging or something to that effect. Amazing tribute!

  • I've had this song stuck in my head for like a week but I don't care because I love it and I love Johnny every time I hear it I want to hug him :D

  • This is my favorite song from the VAN ZANT brothers

  • @raiiderhead, Johnny wrote the song and was released on his SOLO album Brickyard Road.

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHNNY!!

  • This song was a number one hit in the rock charts for a while in 1990

  • This is song I feel for all the friends that have come and gone,

  • I am so damn proud to be from the South, and had the privelage of seeing the very first Skynyrd reunion concert.God Bless the entire Vanzant family.Thank's to Johnny for stepping up into a giant pair boot's to fill. You have succeded beyond any of our expectations.Rock on my friend.

  • One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, and I should know, I've heard a few...

Johnny is one of the best sad song writers ever born... I love this song forever, it also remembers me of someone I've lost. It brings tears to my eyes, really. Beautiful piece of art. One of the best southern songs of all times, in my opinion.

  • awesome song. one of my favorite cd's

  • if this song and video doesn't make you misty eyed, your just not human.

  • fucking awesome

  • Thanks so much for this upload, i was born and raised in Jacksonville, and this just brings back so many memories.

  • is this off of southern comfort?

  • @cherokeecountryboy This is from the CD "Brickyard Road" by Johnny VanZant in 1990.

  • @JunkieDolly thanks man!

  • I named my daughter Melody after Ronnie's daughter. She was borned in July of 1995 and she loves this song and Skynyrd.

  • He also has a daughter named Harmony ... perfect "music" names for such a great singer.

  • one of the saddest songs ever!

  • Wouldn't we all like to go back a few years.... Memories that a person could make, If you could only see down the road, may not make the same mistakes...!!!!!!!!!

  • too bad he didn't save this for the 2000 "The last rebel" album, wouda been a great addiction. His solo CD ca,me out inbetween 1999 and the last rebel.

  • hell ya

  • I remember this song coming out and just was overwhelmed with emotion for Ronnie and thought what a great tribute to him .

I do however disagree with some who say he sounds like Ronnie . Never ! He does not have the vocal talent Ronnie had .

  • @MrDoc1964 he has all the vocal talent, just a differant style.....

  • i lost my big brother & when i listen to this song i feel like hes here with me. gives me the chills everytime i love you big bro keep looking down on me & the family

  • I love how Lacy Van Zant (Their father) is in the video. I had the great pleasure of visiting Ronnie's grave in Jacksonville in 2001. The inscription of Charlie Daniel's quote on the bench is heart wrenching. Fly high Free Bird. You are immortal in our hearts and your songs.

  • i cry everytime i watch this video...reminds me of not only lynyrd skynyrd but of my best friend who i love dearly

  • @sczesny46056 I cry every time I hear this song. ...It's not fair! It just isn't fair...

I love how Johnny paid tribute to his brother by referencing "Free Bird" and either "Tuesday's Gone" ("Train roll on, on down the line...") or Ronnie's famous (hunting) whistle ("That Smell") or possibly both.

By the way, whoever desecrated Ronnie's grave the first time around should hang for it!

I plan on visiting Brickyard Road in Jacksonville, FL to pay my condolences on the 35th anniversary in 2012.

  • @sczesny46056 Agreed. The atmosphere of this song remembers me "Blame it On a Sad Song", recorded in 1997, in th album "Twenty" by Skynyrd...

  • Five years ago today (May 12th) I lost my first child because of her father. This song hits home to me every time I hear it. Reminds me of my daughter.... I miss you Savannah!!! This song has touched so many hearts .................. and the tears continue to flow.....
