@ChevyCorvette7k7 That is called a stinger. It is the common tip used on a merged, tuned header on a normally aspirated air cooled drag car.

Could you tell me a bit more about the exhaust, I have seen them on the VW Beetles. What are they called and are they for power or sound? How are they designed?

There are 4 pipes of equal lengths. They generate at the sides of the head and merge into a collector. There is a flange at that collector where the "stinger" bolts on. You could also bolt a muffler system on here too. The merged header system is a power adder and with a stinger, also make the car much louder than stock, as there is no muffler.

That "ugly pipe" is there for a reason. its a tuned exhaust and that is a race stinger. You will find that exhaust on all pro-stock N/A vw's.

I just installed a new maniflow exhaust on my MG Midget. I had to cut a straight pipe to get it short enough so that the muffler would fit. Even after that the tailpipe sticks out further than the bumper. My dad said I might trip over it. Good to know my tailpipe isnt the biggest tripping hazzard in the world.
