Maybe it is just a myth, the thing about charging tanks with sabres in horseback. But in my eyes, it gives a much more heroic idea of the Poles than your version.
Think about it:
Charging tanks with sabres is a feat of incredible bravery, even if in the end not successful
Fighting as normal infantry is just losing the war
I prefer the first version, its at least very gallant.
@LutzBrux1 Poles has his own tanks 7TP, Renault R35, TKS tankeetes... Cavalary has anti tank weapon Wz. 35 anti-tank rifles - weapon was effective against all German tanks of the period. Cavalary also used Bofors 37 mm anti tank gun. In 1 September 1939 Wołyńska Cavalry Brigade beat 3 German Panzer Divisions in one of the first battles of the invasion; the Battle of Mokra. Cavalary fought like dragoons - they moved on horses but fight on foots.
@LutzBrux1 (1) If you say about charging tanks with sabres, you see in your mind - horseman vs. big tank like panther or tiger, but in 1939 when germans invaded Poland, they only have tanks like Panzer I and II... Panzer I was armed only with two, coupled machine guns, so if the barrel of the machine guns were skewed, the tank would lose his capacity in combat...
@Lololoney (2) In turn, a tank turret did not rotate fast enough to keep up with the rider, and an effective blow with his saber in the barrels could solve the problem...
My grandfather from my mom's side was in the Greek Cavalry during the WW2(1940-1941). They wore similar uniforms like in the video so every time i watch it i have tears in my eyes. Respect for the Polish Cavalry.
Heroes for ever. Ride fast in paradise all of you.
@OstryEro W 1939 roku 10% polskiej armii to była kawaleria. W dodatku trwała modernizacja armii, która uczyniła z ułanów jednostki mobilnej piechoty. Ułani byli uzbrojeni w karabiny UR, zdolne do przebicia pancerza każdego niemieckiego czołgu. Na wyposażeniu mieli także armaty bofors 37 mm. Polska inwestowała w czołgi - polski czołg 7TP był jednym z najnowocześniejszych czołgów wtedy. Trwała modernizacja tankietek TKS w karabiny maszynowe 20 mm.
"Ksiega polskiej kawalerii" przedwojenna i powojenna Smacznego, "Wojsko Polskie 1939-1945 - Barwa i Broń", A. Jońca, "Pojazdy Wojska Polskiego 1939", R. My last comment - Hats off to 90% Poles. Honourable, brave, best fighters (even in British standards - eg Battle of Britain 303sq. or 2nd corp in Italy - Beat the Americans to Bolonia for our 8th army) - Be clever this time around - start choosing the right people - cunning, shrewd, patriotic for your government - History likes to repeat itself - Last time around, Polands freedom lasted 21 years. That time is now closing. Don't let them let your country down. Understand the international stage.
Germany had more cavalry than Poland - not for fighting but for logistics, just like Poland - don't compare 1939 to 1944. Look at the tanks from both eras! (Only Britain was fully mechanized). I sometimes wonder - If Germany had stuck to cavalry for logistics, they would have had less fuel problems towards the end of the war. Also, Germany built huge autobahns, The east was different and use of cavalry in such terrain was sensible.
... Poland had a military culture, Britain a diplomatic one. Both entered a pact to ensure each others borders. Hitler knew that if he attacked the west, Poland would immediately attack him, on the other hand Britain would not if he attacked Poland. (It took years) Polish gullibility. Hitler had options - read fall weiss/gelb etc. He would have preferred to knock out the west first, to reach his main goal of lebensraum and not have two fronts.
3.Poland fought Germany and Russia for nearly 1 month, with German loses of around 30% - sent Hitler furious. France lasted against Germany alone er... 10 days.
4.From tanks to aircraft engines, Poland had a lot of English technology - and 40 Hurricanes on their way by ship as they realized the war was coming.
5. Both British and Polish intelligence worked together before the war - both expected the war to start in 1942.
5. Finally, it was us British that sealed Poland's fate...

2.A lot of info is coming behind out of the former iron curtain countries which contradict or challenge German / Russian propaganda. The world History TV channels have to catch up and we'll be seeing this in the next 15 years.
My Father was in the Polish artillery (horse) . He was captured by the Germans in November 1939 and spent the rest of the war as a POW. Despite the harsh treatment and bayonet wounds in his legs he survived. my Grandparents were not so lucky, grandfather was shot, my grandmother and an aunt perished at Treblinka despite the fact that they were catholic not jewish.
I know that the Polish Army fought a very good fight, If it wasn't for the Red Army attacking from the east, The Poles could have held the Wehrmacht at the Vistula for months, such a brilliant Rear-Guard action was performed,(that it's still taught at military institutions today) that would've given enough time for the French/Anglo expeditionary force to get their shit together & offer some true assistance,If the Polish massacre had not taken place @ Katyn they'd kick Stalins ass as well.

@kemposoefi Thanks for Your words. It`s not the fault of Your country that Polish soldiers wasn`t recognized... it`s just effect of American-Soviet deal after Jałta agreement when Poland was sold to Soviets. Poland was liberated in 17 september 1993 when Red Army get out - 54 years after German-Soviet invasion in 1939.
in reality Poles attacked a group of german infantry, and armored cars showed up killing many Poles.Later Italian reporter arrived and seen tanks beside dead cavarlyman and concluded that they charged the tanks
Rules of engagemend of the polish cav was never charge at entrenched infantry and tank so they could't do something that was against the law furthermore they were used as elite infantry. They used horses for mobility they were normally fighting on foot same as dragons
Apparently the story is that Polish cavalries successfully charged German infantries but still suffered many casualties. When the German journalists arrived to the scene, they were shown the corpses of dead cavalrymen and German armors near them. Hence, they thought Polish cavalries charged German tanks. And since this fact works in favor for German, the leadership decided not to tell the truth. After WW2, this myth was reinforced by Communist Poland to depict the Polish Republic in a bad light.
The film would be ok, if Krojanty charge wasn't described as successful. Wiki says that out of 200 attacking cavalry men 25 were killed and 50 wounded. Hard to call it victory. To give back the pride it is enough to stick to facts.

Great video! Stirring music !! Glad truth is finally being told !! Such bravery in the face of evil must never be forgotten ! Give these amazing warriors their overdue credit !
For those of us who study history (and not watch the History Channel), it is common knowledge that the Germans had several setbacks in Poland. The Polish cavalry had early success fighting German infantry, however, lack of air support and pressure from the Soviet invasion from the East, led to capitulation. I can think of no other nation that has such a long history of outsanding and couragous cavalry traditions than Poland.
As an American my comment should be viewed as unbiased.
@sh1ft9 Cavalry units were using horses as a mean of transport, they didnt fight on horsebacks unless they ran into an ambush. The horses were widely used at the beginning of the war by Poles, Germans, Russians. Hope i made myself clear and your are able to understand my english
@masterco93 Polish cavalary never attacked german tanks by horse charge. Horses was just used to transport. Cavalary was equiped with Bofors antitank gun 37 mm, Ur`s - Wz. 35 anti-tank rifles. They was supported by TKS tankettes, 7TP tanks, Renault R35 tanks and Vickers tanks... Mythical charges of Polish uhlans against tanks is just nazi propaganda. It`s never happened.
Whom are they supposed to learn from? The Smithsonian based their series about World War II in part on the nazi propaganda movie with Slovaks playing Polish Cavalry.
With such a low level of Schollarship, if you could call it that, what do you expect from non professional historians?
Fact: there was or were cavalry assults beaten with MG's and artillery before they reached German positions.
Check W; search for the Polish Cavalry; they tried to ban the wiki in California --too smart
I read a lot of history, and I have read that the oft-shown footage of Polish cavalry charging against Panzer tanks was staged by the Germans for propaganda purposes, mostly to bolster support for the war within the Reich, but also to impress enemy nations.
Despite the modern image of the superior Nazi war machine with its advanced technology, the German army used more horses than all other armies of WWII combined.
Ironically, this proved a blessing to starving troops in the winter of '42.
Actually, the German Army relied on horses far more than the Poles and continued to do so throughout WW2. The only fully mechanised army of the 1939-42 period was the British Army. The Polish Army was one of the best equipped, best led and best trained in the world, far more than US one at the time. And had the best anti-tank gun as well. Little wonder the Germans suffered a higher rate of loss in the September campaign than they did up to the Russian War in fact.
As far as all those who doubt the Poles and their ability should really ask all the families of the dead German (and Russian after 17th Sept) soldiers that died at the hands of these formidable soldiers. Those that go on about this being propaganda should really start reading books, not watching movie clips.
@sh1ft9 Really? what also do you know from the Invasion of poland besides Nazi propaganda? I can't believe people still listen to that shit. You know most of the "footage" was fake because the Poles fought too hard for the nazis to reveal that to the public. This video is very much true, and that's said from a person who studied history of the second Polish republic for several years.
OMFG! CAvalry was fighting like infrantry! IT was only moving using horses, and when going to attack 1/3 of soldiers was staying with horses, when rest go on fight. Besides it was equiped with modern anti-tank rifles and artillery (bofors) whicz in 1939 can destroy any german tank. There were only 2 charges in 1939 (in both ulhans was suprised by german infrantry and attack them with horse (then german armoured cars go out from trees and germans start that sad propaganda...)
@sh1ft9 And what's said in the video is true. The germans did create a negative image of the polish cavalry for, obviously they're own glory, and mainly to discourage remainder units of Polish soldiers who didn't surrender even after Poland capitulated.
@sh1ft9 The polish cavalry actually had quite a lot successes. Due to heavy rainfall a lot of the german logistics got slowed down and the polish horses moved much faster. If it wasn't for the soviet attack in the east the Polish army would never have surrendered and the battle for Poland would go on a lot longer.
@sh1ft9 IT IS TRUE that the polish cav DID fight the the nazis in the manner described in this vid and at times they were VERY effective Could the EVER have won? Not bloody likely but they did fight and fought hard to give the rest of their shattered army time to form some defense!! Brave men all!!
Hell Yeah Brave soldiers fighting to defend their nation and people against a barbaric regime who led the their country of angry sheep to their ultimate demise all on the word of some syphyllitic failed "artist" All Respects to the Poles and their cavalry!!!!
@steve4123456789 - you must know that, most of pictures in this movie came from Cavalry Field Maneuvers or Parades in period 1922-38 thats why you can see sometimes Lances.
Like wrote earlier to you Novik, In 1939 Polish Cavalry used Sabres,
Boffors Cannons 37 mm and anti-tank Rifles 35-UR.
Check on web f.example "battle of Mokra 1939" when Polish Cavalry Brigade WON (tactical victory) with German Panzer Division and you see true power of Polish Cavalry in 1939.
@steve4123456789 In 1939 lances wasn`t used in the battle... Cavalary used antitank UR rifles and antitank bofors cannons . They fight as foot soldiers and used horses only to move...but before 1939 lances was used in cavalary schools from traditional reasons. Most of this pictures are from 1920-1930.
in Poland there is different type of ppl then you obviously, first of all you should at least pay attention on your history lessons and then express opinions, otherwise you will look like complete retard, just like now
Thanks... but Polish cavalry (equipped with anti tank rifles "UR" and light artillery like the highly effective Bofors 37 mm antitank gun) never charged German tanks or entrenched infantry or artillery directly, but usually acted as mobile infantry (like dragoons) and reconnaissance units and executed cavalry charges only in rare situations against enemy infantry. It`s nazi propaganda.
Yeah sure try find somteing about battle of Mokra in 1 sep. 1939. One Polish cavalary brigade "Wolynska" vs. Geman "IV Tank Div". supported by Stuka dive bombers.
In 1939 We can beat Germans alone (even without France and England) but Germans + Soviets not - nobody can`t. We beat the Bolsheviks alone in Polish-Bolshevik War of 1920. Nobody help Us. Poland save Europe from communism. Nobody remember that now. So Germans always need His Russian friends to conquer Poland. The same was in Partitions of Poland - 1772, 1793 and 1795.
Freedom of Poland is in polish hearts. German conquered Us, Russians conquered Us but We never give up. Our freedom is not material thing - love of freedom is a polish spirit.
To ja wiem Piotr (o: , it is just ,that not (actually non other in Europe that I know of) all countries have had to fight for their existance and identity as much as the Polish had throughout their history, thus your country has become a true "warrior spirit country", but other countries have had a lot more peaceful times, and thus do not have this "gen" in them (o: , you only know (and always had to know) to fight to survive, you do have my admiration for that, you know that!!
I really hope that Poland will know peacful times from now on!!,and also get the respect that you deserve!! I have learnt a lot throughout these last few weeks (dzieki (o: ), and I fully understand why the Polish so often write, that you were betrayed (I see it the same way).
May your country prosper in peace in future, you so very much deserved it!
One cannot fail to be moved by the sight of the charge against the nazis. It was done to protect the little ones and the women, and the homestead and animals. It was a gesture to make the enemy respect them and their peoples' spirit, hopeless against modern weaponry (after their success against the german infantry, they were decimated by tanks and machine guns), and moving in the extreme to see. Poland should be very proud.
Ładne :) Jak ktoś bierze ode mnie materiały, to ludzie, proszę o przesłanie linka - ja też z chęcią oglądnę dobry film historyczny! :) Co ja zwierzę? :)
Nawet atakujać ZSRR, używali kawalerię.. prawda jest taka, że na potrzeby wojny, ?Hitler eksportowałkonie z.. Wielkiej Brytanii!! (rzecz jasna przed całym tym ambarasem...)

@Nowik1991
I think he is right.
How do u expect horses will do against tanks and machine guns ?
logically, cavalry can't stop tanks!!
I agree that they were heroes to do so, but that doesn't mean they succeeded.
masterco93 1 year ago
@masterco93 Polish cavalary never attacked german tanks by horse charge. Horses was just used to transport. Cavalary was equiped with Bofors antitank gun 37 mm, Ur`s - Wz. 35 anti-tank rifles. They was supported by TKS tankettes, 7TP tanks, Renault R35 tanks and Vickers tanks... Mythical charges of Polish uhlans against tanks is just nazi propaganda. It`s never happened.
licicaviki 1 year ago
Whom are they supposed to learn from? The Smithsonian based their series about World War II in part on the nazi propaganda movie with Slovaks playing Polish Cavalry.
With such a low level of Schollarship, if you could call it that, what do you expect from non professional historians?
Fact: there was or were cavalry assults beaten with MG's and artillery before they reached German positions.
Check W; search for the Polish Cavalry; they tried to ban the wiki in California --too smart
SkibaFelix 1 year ago
I read a lot of history, and I have read that the oft-shown footage of Polish cavalry charging against Panzer tanks was staged by the Germans for propaganda purposes, mostly to bolster support for the war within the Reich, but also to impress enemy nations.
Despite the modern image of the superior Nazi war machine with its advanced technology, the German army used more horses than all other armies of WWII combined.
Ironically, this proved a blessing to starving troops in the winter of '42.
ybravura 1 year ago
Actually, the German Army relied on horses far more than the Poles and continued to do so throughout WW2. The only fully mechanised army of the 1939-42 period was the British Army. The Polish Army was one of the best equipped, best led and best trained in the world, far more than US one at the time. And had the best anti-tank gun as well. Little wonder the Germans suffered a higher rate of loss in the September campaign than they did up to the Russian War in fact.
kohl57 1 year ago
Good film, and a good choice of music for it.
As far as all those who doubt the Poles and their ability should really ask all the families of the dead German (and Russian after 17th Sept) soldiers that died at the hands of these formidable soldiers. Those that go on about this being propaganda should really start reading books, not watching movie clips.
Tadeusz3030 1 year ago
@sh1ft9 Really? what also do you know from the Invasion of poland besides Nazi propaganda? I can't believe people still listen to that shit. You know most of the "footage" was fake because the Poles fought too hard for the nazis to reveal that to the public. This video is very much true, and that's said from a person who studied history of the second Polish republic for several years.
buildingeverything 1 year ago
Thurgon 1 year ago
@sh1ft9 And what's said in the video is true. The germans did create a negative image of the polish cavalry for, obviously they're own glory, and mainly to discourage remainder units of Polish soldiers who didn't surrender even after Poland capitulated.
azurewrath999 1 year ago

@Nowik1991 Thats not saying much they were out of the war by 1939 aswell, what date was the lance used.

@Nowik1991 As far as I know one charge they did use lancers, which were a choice not slandered, and they worked fantastically!

Thanks... but Polish cavalry (equipped with anti tank rifles "UR" and light artillery like the highly effective Bofors 37 mm antitank gun) never charged German tanks or entrenched infantry or artillery directly, but usually acted as mobile infantry (like dragoons) and reconnaissance units and executed cavalry charges only in rare situations against enemy infantry. It`s nazi propaganda.

Our freedom is not material thing - love of freedom is a polish spirit.

czesc Piotr,
To ja wiem Piotr (o: , it is just ,that not (actually non other in Europe that I know of) all countries have had to fight for their existance and identity as much as the Polish had throughout their history, thus your country has become a true "warrior spirit country", but other countries have had a lot more peaceful times, and thus do not have this "gen" in them (o: , you only know (and always had to know) to fight to survive, you do have my admiration for that, you know that!!
