I find it very hard to believe that no one could stand on the brake, or put on the emergency brake, or take it out of gear, or turn off the ignition. This also happened to me in my 1993 Toyota Previa. I put the car in Neutral until it come to a stop near the side walk. Then I turned off the engine. What happened was the throttle plates was stuck open. This was back in January of 2007

In fact, the Camry was rated #1 on the American-Made car index for 2009, ahead of cars like the Malibu and F150. The 2009 Sienna had more domestic parts than a Buick Lucerne. I also recall a Dodge Mirada I once owned, one night on a trip thru Indiana I left a rest stop and somehow hit the resume and set at the same time on the cruise control, the vehicle took off on it's own and quickly had the car going over 60 mph and accelerating before I hit the brakes. The car was new at the time and it was the first car I owned that had cruise control. That was a good excuse because no sooner had I braked and an Indiana trooper was on my butt, only a warning thank God.

I hate to defray the love GM/Ford/Chrysler crowd but I worked on several very simple human caused problems during my career with the big three. Ford had a runaway trans problem because an assy worker wanted to go home early every day and put TC halves on the line in a diag pattern, at the next assy the robot tried to put the top half on and broke the stator tabs, DCX had a runaway problem because an assy worker was not installing snap rings in the park guide pocket,no one is all innocent.
The more you read about this problem the more it seems like a mechanical problem. There is a pin inside a bronze or brass bushing, the pin wears the bushing unevenly and the bushing becomes out of round. When the pedal is pushed in the bushing can hold the pedal down against the return spring. This does not explain why the brake system cannot overcome the acceleration, which may be a software problem. I am sorry for the people that have been hurt, I'm sure that Toyota engineers are as well.

I agree the quality level is very different. That's why this recall exists. That's why there's over 2,000 cases reported of unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles. That';s why Toyota had to buy back so many 1995-2000 Tacomas due to ROTTEN frame rails Bad quality steel.

I find it very hard to believe that no one could stand on the brake, or put on the emergency brake, or take it out of gear, or turn off the ignition. They said it was due to the "misapplication of the accelerator". Bull shit! If that were the case, millions of cars, of every brand, would be having the same problem. There is no training or special procedure for stepping on the gas, nor should there be. Something is still fishy there; someone is still hiding the truth.

I agree. Toyota made a mistake. Of bringing their manufacturing to America. Now that many Toyota cars are made in America, they have lost their quality. In fact, the Camry was rated #1 on the American-Made car index for 2009, ahead of cars like the Malibu and F150. The 2009 Sienna had more domestic parts than a Buick Lucerne. Toyota's in Australia and Japan did not have these problems. Chrysler used CTS pedals and they recalled, Ford stopped truck production in China because they used CTS pedals

One is the floor mat in which there answer was to cut off the botton of the accelerator pedal. The other was the wearing of the "half moon" mesh gears in the accelerator mechanism which Toyota's fix was to install a shim to make up the difference in the worn gears. Toyota has already admitted that these two senerio's will cause unintended acceleration!Where do I pick up $2,250 dollars?

Next thing you know today's story is a Prius driver claiming that he pulled the mat out and tried to pull back on the accelerator so that YOU THINK it's not the mat. I also recall a Dodge Mirada I once owned, one night on a trip thru Indiana I left a rest stop and somehow hit the resume and set at the same time on the cruise control, the vehicle took off on it's own and quickly had the car going over 60 mph and accelerating before I hit the brakes. The car was new at the time and it was the first car I owned that had cruise control. That was a good excuse because no sooner had I braked and an Indiana trooper was on my butt, only a warning thank God.

I hate to defray the love GM/Ford/Chrysler crowd but I worked on several very simple human caused problems during my career with the big three. Ford had a runaway trans problem because an assy worker wanted to go home early every day and put TC halves on the line in a diag pattern, at the next assy the robot tried to put the top half on and broke the stator tabs, DCX had a runaway problem because an assy worker was not installing snap rings in the park guide pocket,no one is all innocent.

The more you read about this problem the more it seems like a mechanical problem. There is a pin inside a bronze or brass bushing, the pin wears the bushing unevenly and the bushing becomes out of round. When the pedal is pushed in the bushing can hold the pedal down against the return spring. This does not explain why the brake system cannot overcome the acceleration, which may be a software problem. I am sorry for the people that have been hurt, I'm sure that Toyota engineers are as well.

I agree the quality level is very different. That's why this recall exists. That's why there's over 2,000 cases reported of unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles. That';s why Toyota had to buy back so many 1995-2000 Tacomas due to ROTTEN frame rails Bad quality steel.
This goes for Honda too, Poor quality metals being used in brake and fuel lines, body panels, suspension components.

Toyota is doing their best for their users. and everyone in Japan & Europe knows their quality is the most reliable.
I think Toyota should recall for American users, but if US government should keep doing such a mean way against Toyota, Toyota will close some factories there and shift them to East Europe, China, India, ASEAN, Mexico and so on. It will lead to the workforce reduction of US Toyota factories.
