I got a 2005 sebring with a 2.7 and yeah its only got 130,000 kms on it but that sucker is as smooth as it was brand new. These engines are knowing to give out at 80,000 but seriously its all about how its maintained, driven, and the oil. Dont put cheap oil in it for starters and change it when recommended. If you want good reliability use synthetic its expensive but in my opinion worth every penny. My dad has a 2002 intrepid with the 2.7 and its got over 220,000 kms and still runs like a champ.
my first car was a dodge intrepid, and it has 150,000 miles turns on great, but for some reason to me its not reliable, i fix one thing after another, so instead i got a toyota tundra 5.7l and i havent had any issues.
Wow. Intrapid was my first car when I was teen. The engine failed at 56000 miles and I was so depressed. I did oil change every 3000 miles and I did not abuse it...
@rob2049 You'll need to do some recalculating, that is the original engine, which is now in storage awaiting a car to be put in. This car now has a 3.5 HO, because who wouldn't want 50 more horsepower?
@hanyoukimura junk the 2.7 its a piece of shit lol My 2004 Intrepid with a 3.2 (rare) has been running like a dream. so to avoid any and all motor problems NEVER buy a dodge or chrysler with a 2.7 motor
@chickenhuntinattheca There was no 3.2 after 2002. It was discontinued and replaced by the 3.5 (non High Output). The 2.7 can be kept going if you care for it properly. I know people with well over 200,000 miles on their 2.7s.
@hanyoukimura my mom has one with 122000 and it burns about 4 quarts of oil every 2 weeks, my dad is an auto mechanic and these pos cars come in all the time, we have a 1996 toyota camry with 220000 miles and burns no oil, theres a reason toyota is the largest car company in the world and chrysler is going bankrupt
@austin32m If your dad is a mechanic, he mustn't be a very good one. If he was, he would have a) noticed the problem, or the issues that would lead up to it before he bought the vehicle, and/or with routine maintenace, and b) would have been able to fix it or source the necessary parts instead of letting the problem continue.
@hanyoukimura my parents are divorced and she bought it after they got divorced, my dad told her they are pieces of junk but she bought it anyway because it was cheap
I have a 2.7 In my sebring and I thought it was the motor that let go but it was the waterpump what a pain in the ass to do that. watch your waterpump carefully I can't give the engine too much shit though It did make it too 197,343km before it poped
personally i dont think its the motor in these cars...i think its the owners...all it takes to start the sludge buildup is not changing the oil EVERY time it hits 2700 2900 miles on the old oil...i bet every one that has a knock the owner at one time or another said 'ill change the oil next week...itl be fine...'
@bentboybbz It is definitely the engine. I have an Intrepid 2.7 and it is ok until now since I have to change the oil more frequently and also use a full synthetic which is 3-4 times the cost of regular one. I do not have to do that with my 1994 Hyundai which runs great, also I have not seen any one complain about their 3.2 or 3.5 engines as the owners of 2.7.
You cannot blame the owner for not doing the preventive measures that should keep a crappy engine running.
@Shcubbebah Yep it burned oil, cause is the valve spring seals. It's a common problem with 2.7s. I just changed the seals on my 3.5..at least it doesn't require taking the cams off to get at the valves springs like the 2.7 does!
I have a 2000 Chrysler Intrepid with 247,000 kilometres on it and use it as my daily driver to work 220kilometers per day. I use Castrol Syntec and change the oil every 7500 kilometres. I just recently bought a Dodge Challenger RT to replace the Intrepid once it dies, I thought that would have happened by now, but the Intrepid keeps on ticking!
I have a 1998 and it has 218,055km on it and man I love my car. And yes it is a 2.7 and here in canada lots of people get these car to 350,000km and over. In my home town I know four people with intrepid that have over 320,000km on them. The only thing you must do to keep your engian nice and sexy is to change your oil ever 3,000km or so.
@LTV249: I've canadian Intrepid 1999 2,7 too and .. I LOVE MY CAR! I've done 2630000 km and nothing wrong. So, you're right - 3000 miles and oil change 100% Also much better Mobil 10*30 - 5*30 full synthetic! Also every 90000 km timing chain and water pump change)))
This is a stupid question, but I'm assuming that you took that speedometer from A Concorde? Was it hard to switch out? And did it save your miles? I have a Stratus that I would like to switch out the gauges for ones from a Sebring and was wondering how hard it was..
Yes, they are from a 2000 Concorde. The gauges themselves are the same design, just the plastic lens needs to be swapped because the Concorde's is a different shaped. In Intrepids, and I'm assuming Stratus' as well (if its the 2nd gen) the mileage is stored in the BCM, not the cluster itself. SO besides the lens it's just plug `n play. Just make sure the donor car has the same features like number of airbags, ABS, AutoStick or not, or warning lights will come one.
Might be good to run a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil or Rislone Engine Treatment to keep down sludge. Also have oil analysis done to detect coolant ASAP and deal with the water pump leakage right away.
Well I ended up swapping it out for a 3.5 HO. That video is on here as well. Haven't decided what to do with this engine yet. Maybe do the chain/waterpump and stick it in another car with a blown motor?
Well if you haven't done yours yet I'd keep a close eye on the waterpump and seriously consider it soon. It's not the chains that go on these cars, it's the chain driven waterpump. But when it goes it can and does damage the chain, tensioner, and guides. Chrysler redesigned the waterpump and timing chain system to be more durable, so you'll want the newer kit.
I was planning to do it to mine but opted to to a 3.5 HO in instead. :D
@pontiacgrandprix85 i think there are some good ones out there i have a 2000 with a 2.7 i have 210,000 kms on it and the only thing i ever had to fix was an egr valve
these engines got a bad rep from people who didn't maintain them. They may have been more prone to sludging than other engines but as this video shows when properly maintained they will be just as reliable, and often more reliable than other v6 engines.
That is not the stock cluster, it is from a 2000 Chrysler Concorde. The gauges will plug and play you just need to swap the Concorde lens for the Intrepid lens for it to fit. :)
hey hanyoukmura are you gonna post a video with your new 3.5 :) Also did you change your door panels so that they are black leather as well. I really wanna get this done so my car will match more with my leather seats :)
Hey hanyoukimura, how did you maintain your intrepid to last 193,000 miles? What kind of oil did you use? How long did you heat up your car before you drove it? I just bought an intrepid with 127,000 miles and i want it to last as long as possible. Please Help!
I just hit 157k miles in my 2000 intrepid with the 2.7 today. Still runs fine, everything works but the passenger door lock (it won't automatically unlock). I will put a video of my car up before to long.
In Florida where all these old folks drive Sebring convertibles with the 2.7, they barely last 60,000 miles. They never open the throttle more than 10%.
Even Town Cars driven by these people get their throttle body carboned up and the EGR system gets completely clogged up.
I have a 00 2.7 with 109k miles but when I first got the car at 97k miles had slight tapping but when I accelerated went away then around 108k miles got louder and wouldn't stop found out it was the Timing chains so had those replace along with water pump since its in same area and now car is nice and quite. Oh and you should check your harmonic balancer the seals on them are known to go and mess with your engine. Had all pulley's and belts replaced when i got the car only cost like $200 inparts
Hanyoukimura do you ever open her up on the highway? I hear its good to do it once in a while to clear all the carbon build up. I recently did it coming home and was suprised how much power this car has. The car was going down hill though but I found myself going about 90 after 5 secs.
I have a 99' 2 .7 with 130,000 miles. It smokes, but I keep oil in it between oil changes and I bought it used with 112,000. I don't have payments so as long as it works I'm good. I love my car.
Try running auto rx in your engine. It will safely remove all sludge over a period of time, and most likely stop your car from smoking like you said it does. Check out their web site auto rx
Wonderful stuff. I'm running it in my next oil change, and swear by it
There's one guy who got his 2.7 to last him to 280,000 miles. He posted his second intrepid on youtube, which crapped out at 160,000. To be honest 280,000 is amazing especially for a 2.7.
Vouch first engine in my 1999 Intrepid went at 85k and now I'm babying the new one. It does happen but if you keep up with 3k oil changes you will be safe, just make sure no longer then 3k... Kinda sad.
I loved my car, when i bought it for first oil change someone came by and said to keep and eye on engine these cars die quick, 2.7 engines, and checked internet no recalls, but after 4 months and 2nd oil change and 14,3000KM on car on Freeway just Give up and broke peston parked on my drive way since then now its 2 years later i clean it so its spot less :(
Sorry to hear that. Yes they have a bad rep, and yeah I've seen some of them blown. If you still have the car, you may want to consider swapping the 2.7 for a 3.2 or 3.5 There's lots of info to be had on how to do this. It's basically plug `n play so long as you get all of the parts.
my 2000 intrepid has the 2.7 and it runs great to i change the oil every 5000 kms with senthitic 10W30 truck 4x4 oil and its been working great not a problem and its got 196000 kms so about 115000 miles
I'm buying a 1999 Intrepid and have heard a lot about the 2.7 engine and I wanted to know if you could tell me the best oil to use in that year? Thanks
My 2.7 has 126k miles on it, and I push that engine hard. I think Chrysler may have changed something by 2002, because that engine is as smooth as silk, and the water pump is just fine.
1.) It's parked comfortably in my driveway right now.
2.) How come I saw a last gen Camry in the junkyard? Oh right: People don't take care of their cars.
I've seen many cars that have started right up and look like they could pull right out of the yard, only to end up having cars stacked on top of it, because people are too lazy to sell.
Guy's the key to making these engines last is proper maintenance. Synthetic oil is the way to go and be sure to use Auto Rx in your engine. It will clean all the sludge over a period of time and safely deposit the sludge in your oil filter, check it out on their web site, you'll be suprized how may have saved their engines.
Very cool. I have been looking into getting me an Intrepid, or Chrysler equivalent. They have such low resale values that I could afford one easily. They are nice cars too.
I paid 1 thousand for mine, I have power seats, windows, doors all that. And the car still has LOTS of power. I can run way past 100mph no problem, Engine doesnt even struggle.
I paid $2,100 for mine. Last summer myself, girlfriend, and 2 friends went on a roadtrip from MA to Tulsa, OK for the unearthing of that 1957 Plymouth Belvedere. It was a blast, we drove almost nonstop and through 20 states, no problems at all. Averaged 29 mpg too. :3
Your right about the camera because I recently video taped my intrepid with 3.2L and I had the engine on and hood up. It sound like a loud noise comming from the engine on video , but in person its very quiet. The video recorder does not filter sound very well as you mentioned.
Could be! I've certainly seen what happens when on of these things go sour. That being said I think part of the problem is that the engines are a little more maintenance finicky than normal engines, as in one has to be more religious about oil changes and such. Then again, regular maintenance is always the key to a car lasting.
ya it definitely sounds like faint knocking or something when the recorder is up close but thats just the shitty microphone i think. congrats on maintaining your 2.7 to that mileage, post a video of the 200K mark or something
It is the shitty recorder. I did a video yesterday of our Town and Country and it sounded shitty when the recorder was near the engine bay but it sounds much better in person. Probably because the recorder, which is just a Kodak EasyShare camera doesn't do a good job picking up and filtering/balancing acoustic levels...but oh well. It works. :P
Thanks for commenting and I will definitely post another video when it hits 200,000.
Hey man can you tell me exactly how you maintained your engine to get such high mileage out of it. Like did you use synthetic oil, which brand? Did you run Rislone or auto rx in the car to keep sludge from forming. Your reply would be greatly appreciated. I want to get my engine to last as long as possible. If I do have issues I will switch to a 3.5. Thanks
The 3.3 and first gen 3.5 won't easily fit in teh 2nd gen LH cars. Plus they are both down on power compared to the 3.2 and 3.5 in the second gen cars. Both are good engines. Plus they are basically plug`n play to swap a 2.7 for.
Just regular dino oil changes every 3,000 miles on the dot. I hear synthetic is a good way to go, but my car already had pretty good mileage when I bought it, so I kept it regular oil since synthetic tends to find the smallest leak and leak out. If your engine is low miles I would suggest Mobil 1 Synthetic.
Beyond that all I've had to change were belts, the crankshaft sensor, and the fuel pump gasket. I plan to do the timing chains and waterpump soon since it's about time to do it.
I have the3.2L on my 99 Intrepid es it has 129,000 on it. The only thing I had to do was the timing belt and water pump and tentioner all regular maitence.
Almost, I haven't been driving it as much in the winter....NE winters are evil man. I try to keep it out of the salt. I'll post a video when she hit's the mark!
Never had a problem with 2.7 in my family, for some odd reason we have 3 Intrepid and 2 Sebrings with 2.7's and my uncle/cousins never had any problems with them,I know 2 have more than 150,000 miles 1 has 90,000 and the 2 Sebrings a 03 and a 06 have less than 40,000 and sound better than my sisters 2008 Toyota Camry that has the bottom end toyota rod knock common on tundra and camry's..
Well yeah, it makes more power, has better transmission programing and doesn't have the reputation the 2.7 has. If it ever does die a 3.5 is in my car's future. ;)
Even though many people familiar with Intrepids suggest using Mobil 1 Synthetic, I've stuck with dino juice. At this mileage I figure the synthetic will find the tiniest leak or worn seal, and leak out of it, so I never switched, and just use 5w30 every 3000 miles. I like Castol GXT and Mobil High Mileage Oils.
I got a 2005 sebring with a 2.7 and yeah its only got 130,000 kms on it but that sucker is as smooth as it was brand new. hey hanyoukmura are you gonna post a video with your new 3.5 :) Also did you change your door panels so that they are black leather as well. I really wanna get this done so my car will match more with my leather seats :)
jleeangelo 2 years ago
Yeah I will. I have a video but I may retake it now that the car has center caps.
As for the door panels. they're still fabric...but I have plans for the interior. ;)

Hey hanyoukimura, how did you maintain your intrepid to last 193,000 miles? What kind of oil did you use? How long did you heat up your car before you drove it? I just bought an intrepid with 127,000 miles and i want it to last as long as possible. Please Help!
AZoneone 2 years ago
I just hit 157k miles in my 2000 intrepid with the 2.7 today. Still runs fine, everything works but the passenger door lock (it won't automatically unlock). I will put a video of my car up before to long.
zachsfish 2 years ago
Probably drives WOT as much as possible lol.
In Florida where all these old folks drive Sebring convertibles with the 2.7, they barely last 60,000 miles. They never open the throttle more than 10%.
Even Town Cars driven by these people get their throttle body carboned up and the EGR system gets completely clogged up.

Wow, I'm impressed!

Had all pulley's and belts replaced when i got the car only cost like $200 inparts
soob24 2 years ago
I think ours is a 3.2 L V6. Also, ours speed gauge has kilometers and miles, not that it matters.
halospartan92 2 years ago
Hanyoukimura do you ever open her up on the highway? I hear its good to do it once in a while to clear all the carbon build up. I recently did it coming home and was suprised how much power this car has. The car was going down hill though but I found myself going about 90 after 5 secs.
jleeangelo 2 years ago
Who told you that? If you ever open her up on the highway it will cause oil leaks !
michaelheiland123654 2 years ago
how do you figure it would cause oil leaks.
montez341 2 years ago
The engine sounds great, maybe there's hope for mine yet.

I have a 99' 2 .7 with 130,000 miles. It smokes, but I keep oil in it between oil changes and I bought it used with 112,000. I don't have payments so as long as it works I'm good. I love my car.
allizzone 2 years ago
Try running auto rx in your engine. It will safely remove all sludge over a period of time, and most likely stop your car from smoking like you said it does. Check out their web site auto rx
Wonderful stuff. I'm running it in my next oil change, and swear by it
jleeangelo 2 years ago
Thank you I appreciate that very much. I'll definitely try this. Peace!
allizzone 2 years ago
There's one guy who got his 2.7 to last him to 280,000 miles. He posted his second intrepid on youtube, which crapped out at 160,000. To be honest 280,000 is amazing especially for a 2.7.
jleeangelo 2 years ago
208,ooo is impressive for any engine!
A Friend of mine knows someone with a 300M that's go close to 400,000 on it.

Vouch first engine in my 1999 Intrepid went at 85k and now I'm babying the new one. It does happen but if you keep up with 3k oil changes you will be safe, just make sure no longer then 3k... Kinda sad.
Blakrex 2 years ago
They require more diligent maintenance than most engines, but the extra effort is worth t to keep the engine going.

I'm gonna post a new video with my new camera and hopefully in HD soon.

I loved my car, when i bought it for first oil change someone came by and said to keep and eye on engine these cars die quick, 2.7 engines, and checked internet no recalls, but after 4 months and 2nd oil change and 14,3000KM on car on Freeway just Give up and broke peston parked on my drive way since then now its 2 years later i clean it so its spot less :(
cagex007 3 years ago
Sorry to hear that. Yes they have a bad rep, and yeah I've seen some of them blown. If you still have the car, you may want to consider swapping the 2.7 for a 3.2 or 3.5 There's lots of info to be had on how to do this. It's basically plug `n play so long as you get all of the parts.
hanyoukimura 3 years ago
I miss my Intrepid. I had the 3.2 engine, not ONE problem in 153,000 miles. I just got bored with it, So I bought the new Avenger:)
stuwip839 3 years ago
my 2000 has 88,000 but i use maxlife it's semi-synthetic it works well with engines over 75,000 miles
melvinmcmichael 3 years ago
Some of these motors last awhile. Most dont.

my 2000 intrepid has the 2.7 and it runs great to i change the oil every 5000 kms with senthitic 10W30 truck 4x4 oil and its been working great not a problem and its got 196000 kms so about 115000 miles

I'm buying a 1999 Intrepid and have heard a lot about the 2.7 engine and I wanted to know if you could tell me the best oil to use in that year? Thanks
Talisha1982 3 years ago
Synthetic all the way.
atomicpyro 3 years ago
the best oil is a synthetic it's called maxlife it's semi-synthetic it's good for high performance engines and especially dodge intrepid's
melvinmcmichael 3 years ago
I have a 2.7 with 126k miles on it, and I've been using plain old Pennzoil.
wazatna 2 years ago
WTF a 2.7 with 193,000 miles wow these engines usually go out at 90,000 miles
infinity3jif 3 years ago
LOL
Well, the engine certainly has a bad rap, and requires a more vigilant eye than other engines, but regular maintenance goes a long way.
hanyoukimura 3 years ago
My 2.7 has 126k miles on it, and I push that engine hard. I think Chrysler may have changed something by 2002, because that engine is as smooth as silk, and the water pump is just fine.
wazatna 2 years ago
How come i saw this in the junkyard
TKOxPITCHBlAk 3 years ago
Well
1.) It's parked comfortably in my driveway right now.
2.) How come I saw a last gen Camry in the junkyard? Oh right: People don't take care of their cars.
I've seen many cars that have started right up and look like they could pull right out of the yard, only to end up having cars stacked on top of it, because people are too lazy to sell.
hanyoukimura 3 years ago
Guy's the key to making these engines last is proper maintenance. Synthetic oil is the way to go and be sure to use Auto Rx in your engine. It will clean all the sludge over a period of time and safely deposit the sludge in your oil filter, check it out on their web site, you'll be suprized how may have saved their engines.
jleeangelo 3 years ago
Good for you. Proper maintenance can make a lemon go for a long time sometimes, That's all it takes
RiceReaper 3 years ago
Proper maintenance is the key to making anything last. :)
hanyoukimura 3 years ago
Of course, Its nice to see someone else who shares an enthusiasm for common sense
RiceReaper 3 years ago
Very cool. I have been looking into getting me an Intrepid, or Chrysler equivalent. They have such low resale values that I could afford one easily. They are nice cars too.
Tanner874 3 years ago
I paid 1 thousand for mine, I have power seats, windows, doors all that. And the car still has LOTS of power. I can run way past 100mph no problem, Engine doesnt even struggle.
RiceReaper 3 years ago
You're looks very sharp by the way. :)
Here's to many more miles for both of our cars!
hanyoukimura 3 years ago
Hello. This is the stark county district library calling you at 4:27 PM on December 19 to alert you that you have an item that has come in.
geohomoman91 3 years ago
Your right about the camera because I recently video taped my intrepid with 3.2L and I had the engine on and hood up. It sound like a loud noise comming from the engine on video , but in person its very quiet. The video recorder does not filter sound very well as you mentioned.
AA52584 3 years ago
Yeah, I just got a new camera that supposedly takes good video. It's been too cold and snowy/icy for me to bother trying it on the cars though. LOL.

I Guess you Caught Kenosha on a Good day!

Kenosha?
hanyoukimura 3 years ago
That's where they built the 2.7L Engine. Kenosha, Wisconsin.
digitalrailroader 3 years ago
Oh right, silly me!
hanyoukimura 3 years ago
And Like I Said, You must have caught them on a Good day!
digitalrailroader 3 years ago
Could be! I've certainly seen what happens when on of these things go sour. That being said I think part of the problem is that the engines are a little more maintenance finicky than normal engines, as in one has to be more religious about oil changes and such. Then again, regular maintenance is always the key to a car lasting.
hanyoukimura 3 years ago
ya it definitely sounds like faint knocking or something when the recorder is up close but thats just the shitty microphone i think. congrats on maintaining your 2.7 to that mileage, post a video of the 200K mark or something
blinkfan305 3 years ago
It is the shitty recorder. I did a video yesterday of our Town and Country and it sounded shitty when the recorder was near the engine bay but it sounds much better in person. Probably because the recorder, which is just a Kodak EasyShare camera doesn't do a good job picking up and filtering/balancing acoustic levels...but oh well. It works. :P
Thanks for commenting and I will definitely post another video when it hits 200,000.
hanyoukimura 3 years ago
Hey man can you tell me exactly how you maintained your engine to get such high mileage out of it. Like did you use synthetic oil, which brand? Did you run Rislone or auto rx in the car to keep sludge from forming. Your reply would be greatly appreciated. I want to get my engine to last as long as possible. If I do have issues I will switch to a 3.5. Thanks
jleeangelo 3 years ago
3.5 is junk, Timing chain issues. 3.3 is pretty solid though
RiceReaper 3 years ago
The 3.3 and first gen 3.5 won't easily fit in teh 2nd gen LH cars. Plus they are both down on power compared to the 3.2 and 3.5 in the second gen cars. Both are good engines. Plus they are basically plug`n play to swap a 2.7 for.
hanyoukimura 3 years ago
Just regular dino oil changes every 3,000 miles on the dot. I hear synthetic is a good way to go, but my car already had pretty good mileage when I bought it, so I kept it regular oil since synthetic tends to find the smallest leak and leak out. If your engine is low miles I would suggest Mobil 1 Synthetic.
Beyond that all I've had to change were belts, the crankshaft sensor, and the fuel pump gasket. I plan to do the timing chains and waterpump soon since it's about time to do it.
hanyoukimura 3 years ago
I have the3.2L on my 99 Intrepid es it has 129,000 on it. The only thing I had to do was the timing belt and water pump and tentioner all regular maitence.
AA52584 3 years ago
Good for you! Here's to many more miles with it!
hanyoukimura 3 years ago
Did you break 200,000 yet?
mpk192 3 years ago
Almost, I haven't been driving it as much in the winter....NE winters are evil man. I try to keep it out of the salt. I'll post a video when she hit's the mark!
hanyoukimura 3 years ago
I hear ya, I live in PA so I know what you talking about.
mpk192 3 years ago
cool I knew they could reach 200000
AA52584 3 years ago
Never had a problem with 2.7 in my family, for some odd reason we have 3 Intrepid and 2 Sebrings with 2.7's and my uncle/cousins never had any problems with them,I know 2 have more than 150,000 miles 1 has 90,000 and the 2 Sebrings a 03 and a 06 have less than 40,000 and sound better than my sisters 2008 Toyota Camry that has the bottom end toyota rod knock common on tundra and camry's..
trsmar 3 years ago
Well yeah, it makes more power, has better transmission programing and doesn't have the reputation the 2.7 has. If it ever does die a 3.5 is in my car's future. ;)
hanyoukimura 3 years ago
yeah. the 3.5 is my favorite chrysler engine.
sideburns2009 3 years ago
What Oil do you use?
MitsuEclipse06 3 years ago
Even though many people familiar with Intrepids suggest using Mobil 1 Synthetic, I've stuck with dino juice. At this mileage I figure the synthetic will find the tiniest leak or worn seal, and leak out of it, so I never switched, and just use 5w30 every 3000 miles. I like Castol GXT and Mobil High Mileage Oils.
hanyoukimura 3 years ago
Yeah Use Castrol GTX Its a good oil. It offers 57% more sludge protection USE THAT. I Use Castrol syntec and it runs great. Mobil is excellent too.
MitsuEclipse06 3 years ago
Yep, both are good brands, so is Royal Purple I hear but that stuff is expensive!
hanyoukimura 3 years ago
Wow, That motor sounds really nice for a 2.7
