I think that the technology is great, and that its features are great and I love its simplicity and that their so cheap. but i really hate how they look. I don't know who decided that green and white were meant to go together. Black would have looked cooler and the antennas that are for the wifi access are horrible.

Additionally (although this may sound odd) what exactly are the specs on it? It obviously doesn't have much memory. It certainly doesn't have a powerful processor. It's OS looks like a very watered down Leopard of sorts, and can you put other things on it? While this doesn't necessarily matter to children, they still need to make the computer decent enough to run. As far as I can tell, we are looking at one of those Toy computers you can buy at Target for $20, with a webcam built in.

Well, If its on a mesh network that means that packets and protocal can be intercepted using tools like cain and able you can Scan for mac addresses and intercept data. Poisen all TCP Packets set the Mesh as the center point then intercept all packets and passwords on a pc, by intercepting all data. very bad idea alot of people can get hacked. also ddos attacks on the mesh network might mess it up cause your all local. torrenting and p2p will be a problem/

There is an optional hand crank power supply attachment to charge the battery. One minute of cranking will supply 10 minutes worth of power to the laptop.
At one point, the hand crank was to be replaced with a pull cord. Not sure if this has been implemented.

Well, If its on a mesh network that means that packets and protocal can be intercepted using tools like cain and able you can Scan for mac addresses and intercept data. Poisen all TCP Packets set the Mesh as the center point then intercept all packets and passwords on a pc, by intercepting all data. very bad idea alot of people can get hacked. also ddos attacks on the mesh network might mess it up cause your all local. torrenting and p2p will be a problem/

Really? thats amazing! I really do think its a good deal to supply kids with laptops since it will broaden their view, but on the other hand I think they are starting off way too far. I mean how are they supposed to supply the laptop with energy through exercise if they don't get enough food? First things first!

There is an optional hand crank power supply attachment to charge the battery. One minute of cranking will supply 10 minutes worth of power to the laptop.
At one point, the hand crank was to be replaced with a pull cord. Not sure if this has been implemented.

This Is a great idea that I think will come up with good results for many family. I have read a lot of comments that say "the kids are jsut going to sell them as soon as they get them." But I think the perants would be willing to go on a little longer being hungry so their children can have a better education and live better lifes then their perants. Actually, to those people who were talking about viruses: the laptop is running a closed version of linux, and there are firmware updates for it.
Education would be better than food, if a child learns how to grow food, or how to read, learn or write, perhaps the child will think of something that we've never thought of.
If over a billion of these kids were to get one of these the possibilities would be endless.

Not everyone would. If just one out of say, ten children manage to hold on to the laptop and manage to equip himself with the education to lead him to a better life, it would still do a lot for that country's economy.
Besides not all of the OLPC project's target countries are so poverty stricken that they can't afford food. Uruguay(first country to buy the laptops) isn't.
Look, there is no simple remedy for issues like this. You do have a point, I can see that. Can you seriously not see mine?
