  • Of couse I'm not talkin about the original stovepipe. hehe

  • Ry was doin the delta man's blues before it caught on with most of us white folks. He did it accurately, which is a great tribute to the 20's era blues. Thanks Ry... we love ya for it! The "other" white bluesman i like is right here on youtube - has cd now......Daddystovepipe. Sheesh, he's got it deep. Think I'll gon on over now. :)

  • i dont like the look of his turban

  • this is incredible. i just recently discovered cooder when i found out that he was the one playing slide on my favorite stones song, Memo from turner. Ive never heard anyone make slide guitar sound so fluent and interesting. This guy is awesome.

  • That´s righ, PeterMayer. And I very, very like Ry Cooder & Viswa Mohan Bhatt´s ˝A meeting by the river˝. Man, that´s awesome, awesome.....!!

  • He's great because he's got feel out da ass, not jacking off speedy chops.

  • 8th ???? who said he was as low down the list as that....has to be in the top 3

  • you try and play like that without looking like a fuckin tool and getting laughed of stage, you ever tried playing slide?....man i could kick your stupid fuckin brain in for sayin somethin stupid like that

  • Instead of getting your panties in a bunch, you could try to understand that there are many, many guitarists that can play slide guitar just as good as this dude. I never said that I could play better than him; you're the fucking tool here. Just because Cooder is good at slide, does that automatically guarantee he's the 8th best guitarist in the world?

  • ask the other seven they will vote him 1st

  • Great! Love to see boes blues...well you know what Im talking about!

  • is there anywhere i can get a torrent for the entire set ry cooder played for the old grey whistle test?

  • gourgas

  • I just can't imagine my DH rocking out with this song in any church we know but Man, I sure wish he would. It might wake some of those old pew warmers up.

  • That's what you say..

  • soo goods

  • Give him a ring sometime. on 6345789 Any true Cooder fan will be able to work out this cryptic clue.

  • You kids get off you-tube NOW!! Only grown-ups allowed here.

  • but why? haha

i am but i mere child, and i believe you sir, are the one who must go.

  • Different style of music, man

  • no way

  • yeah this kid's a tardo. keith richards cant compare to jimmy page or steve howe at all.

  • True, but Keiths never gonna die so hell eventually be better than everyone.

  • idiot

  • Kieth is and always will be an intermediate level guitar player,no great soloist nor could he improvise much either, your better off saying "KiethRiffhard is one of the greatest 'riff-makers' in rock/pop music! No-one would deny that!

  • Keith Richards?! Don't make me laugh my friend. Listen to Memo from Turner(where the stones "by accident" forgot to give credit to Cooder aswell). SOLELY Cooder makes the song great, Jagger is just talking along(liek raper) and Keith makes a solo that even 5 year old kid would be ashamed of. He invented some nice riffs during the years, but he's by far below average skilled guitarist even today, not to mentin the 60's and 70's the decades when tallent mattered.

  • Hahah yeah that's what matters in music, to be a business man. I see no point in continuing a conversation with a person who proposes such arguemnts. And a piece of advice, check some of Ry's vids .

    Peace.

  • its helps if your in the music industry smarty pants!!

  • this performance is amazing, it really gets me excited about what the Lord can do in anyones life who is willing to call on him..

  • A lot of times great artists aren't particularly nice people. Nice isn't as important as compassionate. I don't know Ry personally but I feel every note he plays has been lived in. And he takes me right along with him. Thanks for posting this video!

    37terra...

I sure hope Arlen Roth doesn't think he's going to make himself more important by trying to make Ry Cooder less important. That would be foolish.

  • Great video ,thanks!

  • Ry Cooder is a blues man no mistake whaterever you may think about the man. Its just that the Blues xluvx

  • The absolute brilliance of Cooder is that he can change his sound - with each rendition of the song...let alone he plays the guitar like a god...

  • The absolute brilliance of Ry is that he's a CARPETBAGGER!!

  • yeah, Cooder is totally overrated!

  • Eh, right. Besides Sister Morphine didnt make his career, if anything made Ry the icon he is it's Paris Texas and the well-known fact Ry "made" Keith (others who made Keith were Brian, Gram, Anita, Keiths parents to name a few).

  • Ya mean some people don't like him.

  • Yes, he's very UNlikeable...a very mean-spirited, nasty, back-stabbing person...even to his fellow musicians...it's widely known. Just a fact, that's all!!

  • Back stabbing is a very unpleasent way to behave, you know, when someone doesn't say to someones face what they really think of them.

There's a lot of this kind of behaviour on

    ytube ISN'T THERE!

  • Ry cooder is very modest about his skill. And Ry cooder def made keith richards who he is

  • Haha! And so did Robert Johnson, and Chuck Berry, and Miss. Fred McDowell, and Muddy Waters and anybody else Keith ever heard!! Cooder modest??....what a joke.

  • I have read plenty of his interview and i have never heard him say anything arrogant if you could show me an artical or something that would be cool but I am just hear to enjoy the wonderful very talented music hes made

  • Most of the mean stuff always has to be edited out of his interviews, because he's so nasty, but trust me....great guitarist, cruel person!

  • Hi terraplane (better known as Stephen, in real life) I don't know why you're so concerned about what people are like in private life when you yourself have been in prison for beatin' your wife. And you know full well you only got of those peadophile charges cos you threatened to kill the little boys mother and she was too scared to testify. I'd clear the shit from ya own backyard before worring 'bout whats over the fence. Reagrds from you're EX brother-in-law

  • drop dead

  • Don't like people hearin' 'bout you're private life huh? The dude you shouldn't be so quick to mouth off 'bout the private lif of others. Sandra says hi by-the-way, all her broken bones have healed, but just like with that little boy the emotional scars will be there forever.

  • wow man/woman , you seriously need to drop the subject. keith richards is still an amazing guitarist, ry cooder is amazing, you are annoying. i get it you cant loe an arguement, who cares anymore, really? get a life!!

  • I can neither win or loose an argument with people like you dude cos because having an argument requires someone putting forward a logical response. I asked you what right you had to judge Keith as an amazing guitarist, you tell me to get a life...sorry no logic there. Here's what I actually think.

  • wow you are so right man i really see how wrong i was, rock on mate..

  • Good. Same

  • hahaha is that stuff true? if so, thats fucking BUGGGED out,,,,, hahaha

  • yah right, im sure keith had no skill before ry, come onn

  • LOL...keith ain't got no skill now.

  • keith has no skill?? LOL you have no skill..

  • Your point being?

  • That's correct both Keith and I have no skill. So what's yoyr point

  • the point is simple you have no skill.. so you have no place in judging keith at all, if you ever hear him play some robert johnson or a five string even at his age with giant size marbles instead of knuckles he would still be better than most guitar players out there. but really i dont know why im arguing with you. who cares what you think. the fact is keith is still very skilful and millions of fans would agree. so go join that bird, and tell your opinions to someone who cares..

  • Oh I see. What you're saying is that those who have no skill cannot judge the skill of another. Does that mean I can't go to a restraunt and judge the food cos I'm not a chef? Does that mean I can't judge the beauty of a sunset cos I'm not God? Lastly if you're correct how come you feel that you have the right to judge his skill level?

  • This is one of my favorite songs.

But I have never heard it sung so crappily!

  • Wheres that dick-weed rheinhardon for Ry? Talkin about Jimi like that deserves a bitch slap. What did Ry write? He did covers differently thats about it. Axis Bold as love is not a cover of anything. Say what you will. For the record youre just a fan boy who cant even play music. If you did then youd know what you was yammering about.

  • Cooder admits he is no songwriter so he's trawls the covers - better to realise your not cole porter than write rubbishy riffers and pretend to be a songwriter like so many "rock stars"

  • i am wearing a bullet proof vest, flack jacket, garlic neclace etc, cause i know y'all will hate what i am about to say.................i like aerosmiths version of this from honkin' on bobo...i say ry cooder and my friends say roy who lol...they don't like aerosmith either actually.....i like both

  • Nice try butyou are way off. Hendrix put soul music into blues and rock and littlewing alone stands without competition in guitar playing innovation lyrics. Nothing Ry cooder can equal that. Boomers story is a great record and the album Jazz is amazing but atits best its a stylist at work with great intuition.check out Lowell George and see where Ry Cooder is comin from. That dude was on but his drug addictions got the best of him.

  • Thats pretty funny - but lowell george copied Cooder he also hired ole ry cooder to play on some of his records and to tour with little feat...... and jimi is a dud player and little wing shows little talent

  • hes no hendrix by a long shot. hes a great stylist and does not play straight blues. he plays country style blues. duane played straight blues and could give a run for his money. this piece is his finest and he owns it. his electric work is deceptive. derek trucks could blow better.

  • you don't know shit

  • Duane Allman loved Ry Cooder. And Derek Trucks would not be who he is without Duane Allman, just as Stevie Ray was influenced by Jimi Hendrix. I heard that Hendrix jammed with John McLaughlin and got his ass kicked but that doesn't mean Hendrix wasn't very important. Hendrix and Cooder are alike in that they set out to do whatever they wanted. But the game of saying x is better than y is a waste of time. Everyone has their influences.

  • This dewd has been bringin' tears to my eyes for 30+ years. Ryland Cooder is the best.

  • you idiot. people love him because he can play anything. not because he dosnt just specialize in one style. he's profoundly good in most, and can pass for great in any style of music that exists today, or has in the last 40 years.

  • Yes we musicians love Cooder because of his diversity and shear brilliance - but record companies don't appreciate people they can't stick a label on and market - I guess you have never been involved in the record buisness as you seem to know just about zero and if Im an idiot then you are somewhere at the bottom of the food chain

  • well if your going to so readily compare consumption with intelligence then im sure your a smart cookie indeed. Its obvious that i have not had dealings with record companies. i dont post any original material i have, and im 16 years old.

whats more evident, however, is your dealings with these people. you sit around all day commenting on a video of Ry Cooder. thats one helluva life. i think i'll be going now, i have some songs to write.

  • morons like ryreinhardt who criticize ANY musician should be blocked from commenting on youtube. Ridiculous and moronic comments about Ry Cooder who is a great musician, gives people a lot of pleasure. Who cares about the dreary crappy ryreinhardt (sick name too!). Go away and die.

  • Ah - can you read? it is record companies I critise not Mr. Cooder and I was simply quoting Arlen Roth - i did not say I believed him - Ry is a great player and producer - but it is a fact he is not a nice guy at all,if you ever meet him you will find that out pretty quick

  • Good song.

  • aint he Great.

  • I am always amazed at how few people actualy know this guy...always overlooked on "Top 100 - Guitarists" lists (I mean you - Rolling Stone!). Thank god that someone had the forsight to post these amazing pieces of music.

  • I agree, and the movie crossroads most people think Steve Vai played the duel at the end of the movie.Ry played ALL of the slide in that movie as well as the duel score. This man is Amazing,as far as slide goes its Ry cooder and David lyndley, for me,They are just so amazing period...peace..

  • According to session guitarist Arlen Roth - he played the slide guitar on most tracks and not Cooder - as Ry was too busy being swanning around acting like Mr. Big Shot, incidently Roth( who I met at a guitar clinic) depises Cooder,so I really don't know if he's being honest,I know he was employed on the movie to coach Ralph on guitar......

  • You are the first person ive talked to who shares my suspision of Arlens claims.I know he worked on some tracks and tutored Ralph 4 days a week for 6 months. But I have met him also and he realy does not like Ry,He also claimes he took the directors chair for the headcutting duel scene. The problem is in all of my research Arlen is the only one saying its true, lol,i don't know.Next time I meet Steve i will ask him..peace bro...

  • According to what the records are, Arlen played all the slide stuff first, then Ry sneakily re-recorded it all so he could take credit for it and had Roth's recordind erased. But Roth taught Macchio to fake to what HE played, not Cooder. Ry's a great player, regardless of how he's hurt other musicians during his career. But that seems to be what he's known for.

  • Ry was never the same after showing jagger and richards some of his riffs and structures - which turned out to be brown sugar, tumbling dice and honky tonk women. The stones sneaked off with Ry's riffs and wrote the lyrics and melody lines and screwed him - then they hired mick tayor as jones replacement after promising cooder the job,the hatred remains.....

  • Well, if that's really true, it's time Ry got over that one, because his name and playing on the Stone's recording "Sister Morphine" literally MADE his illustrious career! It's like Billy Preston hating the Beatles, or something. Anyway, did you know Ry tried to get Richards to be in the duel scene for Crossroads, so I don't think he was that mad at him by that point!?

  • Richards has basically all but admitted what happened - it was Jagger and cooder who fell out badly with a kerosine and matches personality clash...Richards once quoted "I took everything i could out of Ry Cooder"

  • That could also be meant as a compliment...Ry DID want to use him in "Crossroads".

  • True I'm sure Ry never really cared after 1970 something. Cool if there would have been a duel.

  • The en dscene is Cooder on slide, and both Vai and Bill Kanengiser on the electric. Kanengiser also played all the other classical in the film.Roth played slide and all the other acoustic and electric in the film that Ralph played.

  • rolling stone dont no shit, half of the writers in it were probably born way after rock/ blues lengends like ry cooder were around.

  • Rolling Stone gave a nod to Ry Cooder in the 100 greatest guitar songs of all time...#92 was Memo from Turner.

  • Record label types and radio/music TV producers hate Cooder because he plays so many different types of Music - and to please the corporate morons one must just stick to 1 popular style and be boring, so they can market you to the lowest common denominator - the mass moron market

  • Say what you will about the stupidity of those lists but Ry was #8 on Rolling Stone. Still maybe a bit low but definitely recognized.

  • That list is flawed on so many levels you really shouldnt quote it.

  • This man has no peer....outstanding...pure

    genius...top rocker

  • I would like Ry Cooder to come to Santa Cruz!

    He is THE MAN!!

  • powerful stuff.

  • see Ry's Bix Beiderbeck n you'll get over all your 'other' guitarists

ry cooder don't advertise...just the fans n stuff

  • Can anyone tell what kind of guitar that is?

  • Looks like a Martin D-45. Sounds like one too.

  • it's a 1941- D45

  • No, it's about a '69 D-45...difference of about $600K in value!!

  • Thanks for posting this. I have been a Ry fan since the early 70's and only got to see him twice. The first time Jimmy Buffett opened for him at the Mosque in Richmond,VA. Just Ry a couple guitars and a mandolin. He took requests. Probably the memorable show of my life!! He did Billy the Kid and Roosevelt in Trinidad. Incredible!

  • You are a lucky bastard! What a thought! And in Virginia, too. A great state.

  • If you listen to music enjoy it spend your energy in more constructive things than gossiping and writting such comments on youtube .Where do you find the fucking time to compare this guys with each other?

  • This makes as much sense as talking about rather air is better then water or rather your momma loved you better then your daddy.

  • i think that allman was the better guitarist but these guys are right "sure they both played with a slide. does that mean they play the same kind of music?......no they don't" but RY WAS THE MAN DEFNETALLY TOP FIVE GUITARIST EVER!!!!

  • Allman better than cooder - you must be duanes mother, you certainly don't play guitar

  • Allman lol LOL not fit to be ry's roadie

  • I like to hear that, though I've been told I'm stupid...Ry Cooder really is better than duane and many more..mabe tied with jimi...not a bad place to sit

  • How about quitting the "who can jump the higher fence" debate and enjoyin' the music?

  • Jonas J foley is the highest jumping guitar player ever measured - in 1974 Leaping 2.7 metres while holding a gretcsh white falcon between his teeth - and yes he had a big mouth.

  • I love Ry and I love Duane Allman. But don't forget David Lindley and Jesse Ed Davis in the conversation about the greatest slide players of that era. Jesse Ed Davis and Ry Cooder started out together in Hollywood with Taj Mahal with a band called "The Rising Sons". They never got signed to a record deal. Only Ry and David Lindley are left. And they remain great.

  • like ry cooder? you'll love steve ward!!!

  • Pure musical genuius.

  • Seeing this brings back great memories of seeing him live over the years, time he got back on the road again.

  • jesus está presente no caminho principal!

  • Jeez, he is so good. Nice memories..

  • damn is Ry ever good. he did the slide work for Crossroads didn't he?

  • Anyone who said Duane Allman is the god of slide never heard Ry Cooder!

  • or Johnny Winter!

  • duane allman isn't fit to shine ry cooders boots

  • Now, wait a minute there. Duane played a different style than Ry, but he was certainly just as talented. Go back and listen to the Duane Allman Anthology, and think again.

  • Ry Cooders electric slide playing has no peer - if you have not seen dark end of the street - do so.Duane said he started playing slide guitar after hearing RY Cooder - he did try to play like Cooder but couldn't even get near that level - I am fan of the Allman Bros - mostly post Duane recordings

  • OK, Duane was great....by Ry is the greatest. His gift is letting the song drive the performance rather than trying to "over-perform" the way guys like Clapton do.

  • that is so right - clapton is a boring player who just doesn,t get it and duane well he is just a blues player, but cooder is a real original unacheivable style and tone, any half way decent player can sound clap jimmi or duane - but try playing cooders electic guitar chops

  • exactly...non can play ry's chops

  • I like lamb chops, does that cout?

  • I agree, I just dig Ry's style a lot more.

  • The video is ruined w/that scroll...

  • this is so nice. recorded 4 years after his massive Performance soundtrack contribution (check it out - great flick with Mick Jagger as a washed up rocker). this cat is my hero.
