I am watching both Georgian and Russian news (as an American living in Australia--how great is the Internet!), and I think it is impossible, at this point, to tell who started it all; I imagine both are to blame quite a bit. However, Georgia is definitely using media to the fullest, and Russia doesn't have that same advantage, considering its past tense relationships with parts of the West. What a mess. :/ I hope things end peacefully, but no one can know for sure.
