@Barricade360 - After much deliberation with Green Bay's National Railroad Museum, 261 is now owned by Steve Sandberg and the Friends of the 261 - her overhaul is expected to be completed sometime next year.
@FeatherWings78 - The diesel is there for H.E.P (Head-End Power) - Without it, the entire consist is left without lights, heating and air-conditioning.
@FeatherWings78 - That could be the case, but the train was turned on a wye at both ends of the trip. So, perhaps the diesel also helped pulling the train through the wye - not sure, though...
is it really true that 261 has been put back on display if so can someone post a link to pictures of 261 on display? i dont know wether this is true or not
@lolz976 - #1522 is owned by the Museum of Transport in Kirkwood, MO - she was leased from the museum by the now dissolved "St. Louis Steam Train Association", which operated her on these excursions. At least MoT is kind enough to put 1522 under a roof and care for her while she's on display... some park engines aren't so fortunate...
It should be illegal to take an operational steam locomotive out of service except for certain situations. Things like this are slowly killing Americas past.
@pianomanmaestro no the high cost of insurance and stuff like that caused them to give her to the st louis musem of transportation she is now on display
Can you imagine how sad the crew must have felt on these last trips? I know they were tired and in some ways happy to be able to return to their lives, but its clear how all people who work with steam trains understand that they arent a collection of bolts and boilers, but a breathing machine, and in its own way just as alive as they.
@foughtwolf well, this might suprise you. i have never worked with steam trains in my life, but i feel the same way about them that the people who work with them do. anybody who thinks a G-scale live steam train or a 7 1/2" guage steam train is just a "toy" is stupid.
They should enter frisco 1630 when she is done being restored but not imeadiatley, irm should think about entering it in excursion service for a while, then talk it over with thoose who worked on the 1522. and also talk it over with ceartain railroad compainies such as Amtrak. But other than that, I think they should get the 1522 out of retirement and back in service.
@gangbanginfolife09 she had friction bearings and amtrak requires to have roller bearings now and high insurance cost and that kinda said doom for ol' 1522 =(
you know....I would be whistle happy too, if I had spent hours upon hours of my time working on this engine and then had to watch it go into retirement........and it is depressing....considering it's a last run whistle..............................
it is stupid that proper engines get put into retirement, like this or say 4771 Green Arrow and then bland stail new builds take over like 60163 Tornado.
@nicholasbreeden Hi i am a voluinteer at the m. o. t and i help to get the 1522 runing. I had spent a lot of hours on it And i miss it a lot. i have a penny that it ranover it on its last run. I will all ways keep it. And i see the 1522 every wedneday just to dream and think back the times i got to help to work on it and to see it run the fist time out.. WoW what fun it was.
wait a minute the private car Royal street in on the rear did you get the day when they put the green train on there that was the day I rode the final run
Great video and I enjoyed the steam sounds. Thanks for not putting silly music to it

What I don't get is whats with the Diesel on the end of the train?

@trainmaster844 I thought it was because after the engine returned to its destination there had to be an engine to take the consist home.

I'm pretty sure I saw 1522 for the Peach Blossom. I was just driving one day and saw it along the tracks.

r.i.p. 1522 we miss your service.

1522 has some of the most impeccable valve timing of any mainline steam locomotive that has operated in the 21st century.

to TVRM610: Um, try the difference between a 1920's 4-8-2 and a very modern 4-8-4. You are comparing apples to oranges.
TO utube Winkler: this is fabulous footage....you should produce a DVD of this and sell it.

OK, What's with the P42 on the back? #611 didn't need no Amtrak Locomotive for it's last run!
TVRM610 2 years ago 2
611 was using NS insurance. This was an Amtrak spondered trip.

1522's is a 3 chime and so is 4449's. but 1522 has 210 psi and 4449 has 300psi + 4449's is a little worn. As for stalk talk, 1522 wins there.

If you search "august 1966" there is someones home movies on here and there is this engine in some park
