The only people that comment on this are from MSU. The only reason is because we have fucking Patricia F'n Thurston, the worst damn Nutrition teacher ever! She doesn't teach crap. Nobody gives a crap Pollan. I can't listen to this, too boring, but not as boring as our teacher.
This guy is so full of shit. As is HNF 150 - can't believe I pay out my ass for out of state tuition for a class like this! GO GREEN! Going to Indy to watch the Final 4 this weekend, I can't wait!

I can't think of anything else this professor could do to teach less. Speakers are nice and all... But every day? And no class otherwise? Just give me the text book to read. I don't need to spend 2700 dollars of out of state tuition for this.

I think this is interesting, but he's right, it does take time and money. I am always on the go (I work and go to school). I eat a lot of fast food. This seems hard to put into practice for someone with a life like mine, even though I *can* distinguish between the foods and the "edible substances".
I've got some questions I'ld like to have answered but I can't find the answers to. If anyone could direct me to an answer I would be thankful. :) How much land would a person need to put aside to feed themselves for a year? That is, if they grew everything, and they had sufficient variety to be not bored and also be healthy. So, what would those greens and fruit be? And how much space would you need? I'm assuming you would have a fridge or freezer or something to store food for months at a time
BryanAJ, the amount of land you need varies depending on climate, rainfall, available irrigation, etc. Also, how are you going to raise the crops? Organic crops require more land than pesticide-treated crops, animals require pasture, etc. The science of growing and storing crops is a 4-year university degree in some states.
In the Reconstruction following the US Civil War, freed slaves were given 40 acres to farm, though the government evicted them after Lincoln was assassinated.
Okay, climate = Southern Britain. Organic or pesticide? Well, whatever is most space efficient.
Indeed, the science of growing and storing crops is a 4yr degree: I don't have that time! :P So I was wondering if anyone could point me in a direction, or better still, give me some figures to work with just to give me an idea of the practicality of people being self-sufficient.
