@ingemar62 Terrible idea. Why not bring the Berlin Philharmonic to play with them, too. Let the ABB play themselves and have Clapton play with Bruce and Baker alone. Most of the times, more is less.
Listening to all the new incarnations of what was with Duane and Berry Oakley perhaps the greatest American band, The Allman Brothers Band, I've noticed the great affinity both Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes have for the legendary Duane Allman. This band, if not for the three guitar set, may be the closest we'll come to Derek and the Dominos, another awesome band. Clapton looks like he's having so much fun and recognizes the many homages to Duane his guitar mates are shooting his way. Nice.
I agree about wishing Duane were up there, too, but lets count our blessings. Who woulda figured a kid named "Derek", of all names, and a blood relative of the family, to boot, would come along and be such an awesome gift to the Band? Wish Dickie was still there, too......
saw Eric on 12th may 2011 in Glasgow and to my dissapointment he never played this song- the great man was on top form though and done an incredible version of still got the blues in tribute to gary Moore .
How much better is Clapton when he has awesome guitarists to push him? The guy can still SHRED. It's really hard to pick my favorite solo out of these...
Eric, Derek - PLEASE KEEP PLAYING THIS SONG I NEED TO SEE IT LIVE
clapton is so cool man. i love all these guys. and i get weepy when i think about how short duanes life was. the man died at 24. think of all he accomplished in that time, all the sessions stuff, derek and the dominos, and of course abb. can you imagine what a 35 year old duane allman would sound like? i'm going to start crying like a girl now.
Clapton's bend at 4:53 absolutely slays me. It's so unbelievably emotive and I think it just about sums up the entire song in its barely 1 second of existence.
Wow! Words can not do justice to this piece. And you know what? I was thinking when I watched it that Duane was there too. Before I read the comments... Totally awesome. I'm so glad I happened across this.
Here's some clips of Derek vs. Warren. I almost hate comparing these two legends. But I really don't think Warren (or anyone else in rock) is as good as Derek:
Can someone tell me how to post links to youtube video? I keep getting an error message.
@bthoma1 Nice attempt at an insult. But what really is a "dumb" comment is wishing for someone that is dead. My comment was to point out how idiotic your comment was. Derek was better than Duane at 13, to debunk your "hes 30" point.
There has always been some mystique around Eric Clapton and The Allman Brothers playing together, supposedly The Brothers were thinking of asking Eric to join after Duane's passing. It never came to pass, but seeing them play together here(albeit not w/Duane) gives you a good idea of what an amazing collaboration that is...! Eric looks like he's having the time of his life!! Look at that shit eatin' grin on his face, he's thinkin', "Damn Warren, you bloody rock, mate!!" Long live The Allman Bros
I gota say I think warren could outplay anyone on the stage but he doesn't which is the mark of a truely great musician when you can outplay everyone else but don't.
@nintendonut100 , You know, I could tell you were someone who takes music seriously and I thought your critique was thoughtful. It's great when people give a shit about music!!
@flcaltech It must be difficult - we forget he's up there night after night for decades, not just years. After working with Cream & Duane Allman, going through the years as a laid-back solo artist & then 1980s 'pop star', the accoustic years, then back to the Allman connection, it's tough to maintain the standard as as 60+ musician!
Derek Trucks is easily the best slide player of his generation, and one of the top five ever to play slide. Great song, and perfect one to showcase his talents. The Allman Brothers Band is brimming with talent, and Clapton is still as awesome as ever.
I can't get enough Clapton's reaction to Warren's solo. Makes me wonder how much he knew about Warren prior to this. They should've played together years ago!
Eric plays with an intensity that I haven't seen since 1970. Absolutely amazing solos from all 3 players, especially Warren! When's the last time you saw(if ever) Eric look at another player like that, with a big shit eatin' grin on his face, shaking his head in amazement over Warren's playing. Glad Derek got that Paul Reed Smith Amp, it really cuts through the mix, unlike his old Fender Super Reverb. I'm not knocking Fender, just that that particular amp couldn't cut it w/Allman wall of sound.
@hazor777 Yeah it's a love fest up there, and for good reason. When Warren takes a solo, EC smiles and glances at Derek, who just keeps chording, like "yeah dammit this is how we do it in the ABB"... then when Derek @ 4:20ish catches EC's ear, Clapton starts grinnin' again and then at 4:33 Eric Clapton and Warren Haynes share a "good God!" laugh and look over Derek's stellar work. This clip makes me laugh with joy.
i love at 4:20 when derek throws in that lick that duane does in the studio version and clapton nods, grins and thinks hes still jammin' with duane. derek is one helluva player! @bthoma1 i agree man, wish duane was up there on this!!
@longknife EC really enjoys playing. That's all there is to it. HE LOVES MUSIC. Period. He especially enjoys working with people who also love music. DT and Warren both eat, sleep and breathe music. They are also masters of the craft, and when you put talents like these three have in the same small room, with a really tight band backing them, it's beyond description.
Will they play together again at the next Crossroads Guitar Festival, I wonder ?
I try to imagine ABB augmented with Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, Steve Winwood and Bobby Whitlock, all backing up EC at the next Crossroads Festival while doing Cream, Blind Faith and Derek & The Dominos songs....
Longknife--Clapton is never the 3rd most interesting player on stage. I have seen all these guys numerous times and they are all incredible but Clapton still trumps all. I will agree that Warren solo is just mind blowing though. Good shit all around, amazing video.
@wnt2bkazam 0 we can agree to disagree. I have seen Warren and Derel countless times and Clapton a handful. Frankly, I like Clapton mostly live. It was an awesome night and I think Clapton really enjoyed it. I wish I had seen an interview or something afterward.
Got to hand it to Clapton - he still has some serious chops! On this night however, he is up there with 2 of the best gunslingers out there! Not often Clapton is the 3rd most interesting guitar player on the stage. Great night.
I can't stop watching this video. When EC shakes his head during Warrens solo I'm reminded of Dave Matthews comment to his drummer saying "He's bad" during Warrens solo on "Cortez the killer" video from Central Park. This whole song rocks.
have to keep playing with it. (thats what she said). gave up tix for this night so I could go the week before. now I like Boz Scaggs and Bruce Willis but lord, what a faux paux.
plus he is one of those guys who is all about the band as a collective. Would be nice to see EC and Phil get together, they would just crush it. Alas prob wont happen at this point.
@bthoma1 : I feel ya, but Derek's up there, and IMO he's like a conduit for Duane's spirit and then some. Just look at Clapton in this, it looks like he's really energized and feeling that nostalgic feeling. I can't think of other individuals who can make the Derek & Domino's songs come more alive than the AB's
Some stellar solos from Warren & Derek! I love how Eric just keeps laughing, like maybe he's thinking,"this is the fucking best I've ever played this song!" He's also probably thinking,"man, I've got to get Warren in the studio to collaborate on a song." You done us proud boys!! Long live The Brotherhood...
@mauirob69 actualy I think he's thinking "note to self NEVER play with warren haynes again or he'll wipe the floor with me again" but seriously I agree with you though warren would wipe the floor with him just as he does here.
@nintendonut100 only non-players speak like this. Clearly, all 3 guitarists are excellent. Being picky, it could be said that Warren is building on solos that EC & DA developed 40 years befor. Can't some people just shut up with the childish comparisons?

Derek Trucks....the only guitar player that gives me goosebumps...this guy is unreal!
His solo is so masterful...he respects the original solo, keeps the key licks, but adds his own flavour to it...truly a genius! Hats Off to DT
