well.. he is great, in fact.. on the other hand, he is too loud to be able to play more accurately.. if someone playes as loud as he does, it is very difficult to make good articulation.. he has his own energetic style which is quite good, indeed.. but several times he playes things that ,i think, don't make sense .. meant for effect..
As far as I'm aware, he also plays a trumpet, so that'd be one factor on top of his Monette mouthpiece. That mouthpiece looks pretty small, and the trombone is, of course, tiny as well. Then there is, of course, his insane stamina and experience.
This guy seems to be pretty much invincible. I don't know too many jazz trombonists, but I'm pretty sure a lot of them would have a hard time rasping that high throughout the entire 64-bar solo of Caravan.
It is definitely lighter, compared to the more mellow sound of classical trombone. He just has a naturally brighter sound than most trombonists, classical or jazz, but that's awesome.
Well, when people play classical horns, they play trombones with F attachments and with a bigger bore...like .425 hes playing a jazz horn...like .350...it makes the sound lighter...and thinner
I didnt know specific bores...just the concept...that classical horns have larger bores and are fuller and darker...Wycliffe is playing a jazz horn with a smaller bore, which makes it easier for him to pop out those high notes...im 20
I used to play one, and it makes such a different tone colour! Although it doesn't really work for classica. But it is awseome for latin, funk and jazz
Don't forget, he's playing on a monette prana series mouth piece.
I used to play on one, and they make the most amazing tone colour, so different to anything else you've ever heard - but not appropriate for classical, only for jazz funk and latin
Everyone who says this guy sucks needs to get there facts straight. First off, he's Wycliffe Gordon. Enough said. Second, he teaches at one of the best music schools in the world, Julliard. Thirdly, I don't see anyone of you bastards on stage performing. It's a live show. He's appealing to the crowd and having FUN. You know that word that everyone should be doing while there playing anything period. Shut your pieholes and appreciatte good music.
i'm not primarily a jazz musician, but as you can see this man is IT. listen to everything out there, and wonder why he is performing around the world...constantly. he's IT.

wait...am i listening to a jazz trombonist or a trombone playing sound effects for loony toons? please...go listen to some JJ Johnson and you'll know what a jazz trombonist should sound like.
obviously you don't understand what jasz, jas, jass music is.. before the real pretty soft notes came to this music we now call "jazz",the music was "hot" meaning loud, brash, boisterous etc. so knowing that, how could you post such an idiotic comment for all to see? do yourself a favor and do your due diligence next time before making a statement like that. get back at me once you come to your senses!!
Oh please stop and broaden you horizons. No two instrumentalists need sound the same on any instrument. How boring would that be? I'm a JJ fan too, but Wycliffe is an amazing trombonist as well.
honestly,,,to me this guy is just a young cat with chops..hes not really playing much music. I'm a trombonist too. its not about how high you play but the notes you blow out, honestly im not impressed, dont get me wrong he has amazing chops though
Check out his album "Slidin' Home"... man, unless you've checked out a player's ENTIRE discography, be careful what you say about them. Wycliffe's a bad cat and he has MANY styles at his fingertips.
You're an idiot. Make sure you have viable knowledge of a person before you embarrass yourself. Stupidity. You're right, I am giving you shit, which is exactly what you sounded like
I' a trombonist. It's huge enery. Shouting yes. Admittedly. Very raw. Very physical. Wish I could meet him. It's very provocative. I hear rock influence in it. He's swinging, I know, but I hear rock, electric fire in his art...
okay, he is good.. he feels ,how to play blues.. so that's cool.. but , in my opinion , often he plays things which don't make sense... oh yes, I know, I'm nobody, and he is The Great ... and I don't understand his modern style.. hmm.. Anyway, I dont't like this ''goin crazy-style''..
I heard him performing live with the Brass Band of Battle Creek a few years back. The great thing about him is that he's got so much energy and he keeps it going.

You should hear his solo on his "heads up" album with John Allred. Seriously, it is so ballsy.

Yeah dude, Wycliffe's got some insane stamina. I wouldn't be too surprised if he's got some extra mitochondria in the cells of his chops.

no Trombone is smaller the .48 or .49... a large bore is about .547. .425 is smaller than my Trumpet, how old are you?
