As early as the 60s people were predicting its demise, and the trickle of emigration among middle and upper class whites who had the foresight to understand this grew starting in the late 70s. The only people who lived in South Africa when the Dutch arrived were those who now are known as Kalahari Bushmen. They were however very few in the cape area and more concentrated to the northern provinces. These bushmen lived in peace with the Dutch.

PW Botha was one of the greatest politicians in the history of South Africa, for he understood the need for change whilst still maintaining basic law and order and upholding standards - two guidelines clearly absent in SA today.

Many are always ready to point fingers at Botha and so-called Apartheid. But the reality of it is that Botha was the first white ruler to begin scrapping that system. More people die each year in SA than those that died under 'Apartheid crimes' in 48 years of white rule. De standaard Afrikaanse accent zijn meer verstaanbaar voor Nederlanders en worden gesproken in de interieur van Zuid-Afrika (vooral in de hoofdstad, Pretoria).

As early as the 60s people were predicting its demise, and the trickle of emigration among middle and upper class whites who had the foresight to understand this grew starting in the late 70s. There was simply no way of sustaining such a system indefinitely, socially or economically. The country had become a world pariah and it was unrealistic to expect to keep segregating 4/5 of the population forever.

The only people who lived in South Africa when the Dutch arrived were those who now are known as Kalahari Bushmen. They were however very few in the cape area and more concentrated to the northern provinces. These bushmen lived in peace with the Dutch.
It was the bantu (xhosa etc) who killed the bushmen when they came in from the north.

PW Botha was one of the greatest politicians in the history of South Africa, for he understood the need for change whilst still maintaining basic law and order and upholding standards - two guidelines clearly absent in SA today.
But ultimately, Botha understood the corruptibility of black politicians, hence his reluctance to simply hand power over to the ANC.

Many are always ready to point fingers at Botha and so-called Apartheid. But the reality of it is that Botha was the first white ruler to begin scrapping that system. Under PW, over 100 discriminatory laws ended up on the scrapheap, including the pass laws, the mixed marriage act and the group areas act, all cornerstones of Apartheid.

It has absolutely nothing to do with black or white. It has everything to do with maintaining law and order, and upholding standards. That is how I will remember Botha.
There should be a balance between law & order and basic human rights in any democracy. Unfortunately, law & order is seen as racist in this now crime-ridden land - and also seen as an infringement of human rights, which apparently means do everything illegal.

Until 1989, he was. He fully supported the apartheid system, upheld the segregation of schools as Minister of Education, and never advocated any kind of reform until the writing was on the wall -- the growing international embargo and its threat to the SA economy. Only then did he embark on a reform path. Call him a "reformed monster" if you will, but the point is that the NP has to be considered amongst the most diabolical political movements of all time. And he joined up enthusiastically.

More people die each year in SA than those that died under 'Apartheid crimes' in 48 years of white rule. What the ANC taught its people was to rape, murder, steal, hijack etc etc and then get bail - and do it all over again. The only reason why they get so many votes is because the very people who vote ANC believe that the ruling party is pathetic on crime and the justice system is in tatters. Why then vote for someone else who will deprive them of getting away with anything, even murder?
