  • She does it justice. I just prefer Annie. That's all. Stephanie IS a really good singer.

  • Also a nice version-thank you .-))))))

  • Also a beautiful version-but I always like the original with Annie-she is the best...

  • @pelikaaann: agreed

  • @pelikaaann so, so true.

  • @CrimsonKing589051 Yes that's true.... Quite different styles. Then ther's also Candice Knight with Richie Blackmore doing this. I think that you like the more traditional Genre of pure medieval Irish-English Folk singing better than modern stuff.

  • @lflarry1

I am not sure I would call the original Ren version pure folk...sounds more like pop to me, all dressed and padded up to boot. Both the Blackmore's Night and this version are closer to folk actually. Annie's singing is far more "alive" and "into" the song and that makes all the difference to me, I can't find better words to put it. I don't really care about the style or interpretation but I do need a similar level of emotional involvement as the original to be satisfied.

  • beautiful!

  • In my totally biased opinion, the Renaissance version is better, but what a lovely voice this woman has, and why have we not heard any more of her work?.

Am trying to get hold of a copy of "the other woman" but no luck so far.

By the way, what became of Jon Camp?

  • Annie Haslam kicks this girls butt. Go to the original - RENAISSANCE - this pretty much sucks by comparison.

  • Well, I would not be that harsh with my words but otherwise I pretty much agree with you. :D Gives you to think what those songs would have really turned out like without Annie's voice.

  • It's not a question of being better or worse, this is a simplistic and poor way of thinking. Annie and Stephanie are different singers, from different times, and have different styles. But both have a brilliant vocal technique, both give us wonderful emotions, both are really great. Is a gift hear this two fantastic singers giving us their personal interpretations of some of the great songs by Michael Dunford and Betty Thatcher.

  • Comparison is inevitable, dear...it's Annie's song, after all. I might add that but for my academic interest in comparing both versions, I would find it hard to make it through this version...it struggles to hold my attention. I also question the assertion re Stephanie's brilliance...she may be musically educated but just listen to the trill at the end of Carpet of the Sun off this album...um, where is it actually? Talented? Yes. Brilliant...no, certainly not in comparison to Annie.

  • @saikofan01 In my humble opinion......Very well put... I agree with you.

  • @nuclearG1 That's a bit harsh, isn't it?

Stephanie is more a Showtune/musical/jazz singer but she most certainly does "Not Suck" by any means.

  • @lflarry1

He didn't say she sucked, he said this version sucks. While that's a somewhat indelicate way of putting it, it's not too far off the mark because it's really plodding and tepid. Annie is so much more expressive it feels like a joke that the same song could be sung like this. I certainly cannot see both versions at the same time as special because there's night and day difference in quality. I am happy anyway for those who do, liking music is a little harder for me!

  • THis is one on my favorite songs by Renaissance.

I had never heard of Michael Dunford, but this orchestration and her voice did pay a beautiful tribute to one of the songs that made this band great.

  • @dakwa1 Yes, this song is a masterpiece! Michael Dunford, the main composer of Renaissance, started this project with Stephanie Adlington in the 90s. They released two discs, "The Other Woman" (1995, with many new songs by Dunford/Betty Thatcher) and "Ocean Gypsy" (1997, mostly with new orchestral versions of Renaissance songs).

  • Thank you for the comments! Stephanie is really unique, and I'll upload also "Love Lies, Love Dies", but it will take some weeks. In this particular version of Ocean Gypsy, there is a flute/orchestral part simply sublime, one of the most beautiful melodic and harmonic lines I have listened to: from 3:52, beginning with the flute, until 4:56.

  • Rather late off the blocks Mickey

I love Steph. why only this track? betty

  • It's one of my favorites too, it has great songs, like the one you mentioned, "Love Lies, Love Dies", "Lock In On Love" and others. It's fascinating the fact that all the female singers of the band have voices and styles so different, and all of them are simply amazing to listen. That is one of the things that enriches the Renaissance's legacy.

  • It's a great pity that Stephanie Adlington and Michael Dunford didn't go on to make a few more CDs of original music. "The Other Woman" is one of my fave albums, with the title track being outstanding. Stephanie's voice is a complete contrast to Annie's, but she's a fine and beautiful singer.
