That's how evolution works-it's not the strongest species that survives...it's the one that can adapt to change. We survived, though sadly it was not the same for the Neanderthals. Overall, they were an intelligent people with culture, language and the ability to survive. They were one of the most successful human species to have lived, but perhaps they were too well-adapted. However, it is still debated how they died out, but I still think it was ecological pressure that killed them in the end.
In terms of Neanderthal extinction, I find it unlikely that it was genocide or anything as dramatic. And it's not because they were stupid, which they weren't. It seems more likely it was due to ecological pressure-like climate change, low population numbers and competition from another human species. Over time, we may have swamped them in terms of population numbers and the Neanderthals eventually died out.

I'm a little confused here. Did we or did we not interbreed with neanderthals? some sources says yes, we did, this video says we did not. From what I understand, when a species is separated by geography, they can evolve until eventually they become a different species and therefore cannot interbreed. That's how evolution works-it's not the strongest species that survives...it's the one that can adapt to change. We survived, though sadly it was not the same for the Neanderthals. Overall, they were an intelligent people with culture, language and the ability to survive. They were one of the most successful human species to have lived, but perhaps they were too well-adapted. However, it is still debated how they died out, but I still think it was ecological pressure that killed them in the end.

In terms of Neanderthal extinction, I find it unlikely that it was genocide or anything as dramatic. And it's not because they were stupid, which they weren't. It seems more likely it was due to ecological pressure-like climate change, low population numbers and competition from another human species. Over time, we may have swamped them in terms of population numbers and the Neanderthals eventually died out.

And I have found no evidence of Neanderthals eating homo sapiens! There is some evidence that WE ate THEM, though it could not have led to some form of prehistoric genocide. And there is evidence that Neanderthals buried their dead-in some Neanderthal burial sites, there have been found some grave goods, like flowers and bone ornaments. And Neanderthals are more intact than the bones of most hominids, rather than being scattered and lost. Though they were not us, they were caring people.

The ability to make tools was around in hominid species for around 2 million years! Weapons used for hunting developed over hundreds of thousands years-from the simple hand axe to the deadly throwing spear. It was common knowledge, knowing how to make a spear, by the time Neanderthals were around, so naturally they knew how to make spears. As for clothing-no needles, yes, but one could easily drive a spike through animal skins and thread it with animal gut to sow it together to make clothing.

We can forget the idea that they were slow-witted. In fact, I feel they were as intellegent as us. Evidence has found that some of their technology was more efficient than ours and I think most of their technology was brought about observation of themselves and the world around them. Like their weapons and hunting tactics-they could not run very fast or throw very well. So they developed thrusting spears instead of throwing spears and ambushed their prey rather than chasing it.

I'm a little confused here. Did we or did we not interbreed with neanderthals? some sources says yes, we did, this video says we did not. From what I understand, when a species is separated by geography, they can evolve until eventually they become a different species and therefore cannot interbreed. But some species can, like horses and mules, (donkeys). Or am I wrong? Anyway, I would think they would interbreedif they could, since people were scarce then and being choosy wasn't an option

Women would have been a scarce and valuable commodity then, and throughout history women have always had value in that sense. I think it unlikely that homo sapiens women would have willingly mated with neanderthal men. Women in either group, given the choice, would probably have preferred to stay within their own groups, they would have felt safer.

@8698gil Fair enough. Yeah, I think women back then could have used in some form of trade, something I think would have occurred often in Neanderthal society. This could be because Neanderthals may have lived in small clans and family groups and so when interacting with other clans, would have traded women to help the survival of the clans and families. So it could have been the same for Neanderthals and Homo sapiens. As the willingness in mating, that's just what I think. But good point though.
