You swing way to fast. Fast recovery speed has nothing to do with how fast you can swing back and forth. This machine, as well as the E-Trac, is meant to be used slowly. For all those bashing this machine - simply using this dudes video as a means to decide whether to buy it is just plain ridiculous. I have been swinging both and E-Trac and an SE for many years and I have had zero problems finding keepers in beds of iron junk. Learn to use your machine before posting propaganda like this please
@MrWarmsie The idea of these videos was to compare like for like with similar swing speeds, you are incorrect in your assumptions, nobody is “bashing this machine” you are obviously a ML fan & have seen something you don’t agree with, just try the same test yourself BUT don’t slow down from your normal detecting sweep speed & you will have a nasty shock, I hope you continue enjoying your machine & have many good finds.
@RegtonDetectors This video is a misrepresentation of a great machine. The Explorer SE and the ETrac are not meant to be swept back and forth like a golf club. This is a classic amateur mistake. You have created a bad image for Minelab with your poor use of this metal detector and you should be ashamed of yourself. I hope that people are not stupid enough to use this review as an indication of what this machine is capable of. Your condescending remark about me having a nasty shock is laughable.
@MrWarmsie I’m afraid you’re very much mistaken, Norfolk Wolf was also a Minelab user himself & was only too aware of the pro’s & cons of this machine, you have missed the point entirely, this is a like for like comparison at realistic detecting speeds. Maybe a quick read of his book ‘Advanced Detecting’ will help you to understand what is being shown.
Sad to say that John Lynn, the Norfolk Wolf, died today. How many people purchased their first detector because of this mans great advice and knowledge on the subject?
Wish I had NEVER sold my explorer XS, I could go right behind people who had swept around a picnic area and pull coins out left and right. Better yet with the right program loaded I could work right around a park bench, where most detectors go freakin' nuts, and dig out coins like it was easy :) ...sigh.. loved that machine :(
All machines with digital readouts have factory presets like based on the size of a range of coins , and all so ring shapped metals ,so if you run a pound coin over THE coil of an Explorer two, it registers at 28 ish on all Explorers its the same , with a range of coinage for the uk , presets for the states may be different, they are all so preset to show pull rings and bottle tops ,28 seperate frequencies will give more depth constantly , you cant compare single Freq VLF machine..
If you are too caught up in recovery speed then that probably means that you are sweeping too fast and will miss some great finds. The Explorer is great for finding those deep targets ...... and when hunting deep you have to go slow on every machine on the market.... not just the Explorer.
What a shame! Thank God I don't have one of these .......I wonder if the e-track has the same recovery speed........ Anyway, keep selling them for $1300 minelab and lose a lot of customers. What a crap!
Why is the money sign in the dollar configuration on the LCD,this suggest to me that this detector is designed for the Austrailian and American market ?.
i was gonna go buy one of these this month but not now! my 80s fisher 1265-x recovers quicker and will match it on that field test 2, i know because i tried it today! ill stick to what i got.
recovery speed is slow because it is multi frequency!! ace 250 is begginer machine no where near as deep as this come on £160 machine versus £1000 machine!!!!! no contest!!!!
John, I like your concise video reviews. It's nice to see each machine run over the same test bed. Only shortcoming in this video is that you didn't slow your sweep speed enough. Yes, you can and I do go much slower (in iron) areas with great results.
I ve used the minlab se in a bed of nails up agienst a tesoro, Both were lacking, when it came to multiple nails, had to just slow down and use a small coil. After watching this video I see why Thank you.
Crap recovery speed for such an expensive machine, theres far better and a lot cheaper. "In air" tests with rusty iron are not even worth mentioning, you will have no "iron halo" around the nail caused by the rust from it.
Ok, I just remembered something important to add to this video, I believe!!! When you were comparing the "masking affect" of the penny and the nail, it would have been more fair to put them closer together, and sweep them at different angles. Then, I believe this detector would "shine" in those regards. You kind of "cut your own throat" on that one. Marc.
I own a Minelab Quatro, which is an excellent detector, but I've been looking at the Explorer SE, as another detector, but I'm certainly concerned about your test with the nail and the penny where the nail seems to mask out the penny. I'm not sure if that isn't true with all detectors, not just this one. I still think this is probably a great detector. Marc Trainor.
@Rhuantavan I disagree. If a metal detector can't detect a coin 10cm in the air, it won't detect it in the soil at that depth either. It helps at least identifying the poor detectors. It can also provide some information about the maximum possible depth that a detector is able to reach, although in real conditions will be different.
excellent representation of the explorer se. wonder how it would do with the pro coil? would be interesting to see these tests performed on the new minelab E-Trac...Well done Wolfie.
RIP Norfolk Wolf!

Far better machines out there at a better price. In air iron tests=waste of time, no rust halo around the iron...its not rocket science.

air test does mean something!
if it doesn't find it in the air it wouldn't find it either in the ground.air test is the best possible situation/scenario/settings.
