What I love about this movie, my favorite, by the way, is that it's not computerized. It doesn't look fake. The people are genuine and so are the costumes. Amazing and THE best movie ever made!
OH MAN! IT'S AMAZING HOW MUCH I ENJOYED THIS SCENE. I EVEN QUOTE IT OCCASIONALLY. IT'S COOL TO SEE THAT I'M NOT THE ONLY PERSON THAT THIS APPEALS TO. THANKS FOR UP LOADING IT!!
Question...why did Arrius whip Ben Hur for no apparent reason? All he did was answer his questions. If I was in that place and he whipped me for no reason, I would have said "what the f**k are you doing, man?" Then, I probably would have grabbed the whip and whipped him back, saying "how do you like it?"
@Dac719 Still, there would be a better time and place to start a slave rebellion. That was the whole point of this scene and the answer to your question. Ben Hur knows better, than to let his emotions controll his actions.
"Hate keeps a man alive ...... it gives him strength". The strength of fighting spirit which a person weilds during times of adversity is a stark measure of one's stoic fortitude.
@Tony63909 Surely to have better rowing performance (also if the ill man recovers). However, it is often said that historically there weren't slaves but trained rowers in those ships, because they couldn't allow the slightest lack of disciplin during a battle (rowing a trireme or a quinquereme has to be very difficult due to the small distance between the oars)
@Railriderchris Quite right. Rome never used slaves. Rowers were actually trained sailors and warriors. That way if things ever got heavy in battle, they could be relied on to fight also. Makes sense. If slaves were used, they'd turn on their masters at the first chance.
@benhurfanclub Yes, and i like the part with the naval battle very much; it is still very rare to have movies with sea battles involving galleyships ;-)
I'm pretty sure my favorite line of the movie is right after this clip ends... "We keep you alive to serve this ship, so row well... and live." Does anyone else have a link to that scene?
Actually, after the establishment of the Roman Empire, the consuls were merely a figurative representative of Rome’s republican heritage and held very little power and authority, with the emperor (Caesar) acting as the supreme leader. So it actually makes sense that a consul was on the ship. The only way your analogy makes sense is if Caesar himself was on the ship.
'He's insubordinate, consul'.. "That will stop!" I remember that ever since seeing this for the first time as a 10yo. That is one bad ass introduction to a character.
Awesome. I looked it up because it's in the beginning of the Children of Bodom song The Nail. Thanks for uploading this. He says it with so awesome pronounciation.
Someone please post the scene in the dungeon when they find out that Ben Hur's Mother and Sister are LEPERS.

How better to sculpt that perfect torso - hard physical labor, a good sweat, and the incentive of the lash. Where do I sign the dotted line?

@Dac719 And then the guards would kill you. End of the movie. ^^
He whips him, to test him. He's impressed by a slave that can survive so long.

@MARGARELON See blusmile1's comment below. If the guards kill me, that would happen to avenge me.

Did the Roman have the ill galley slave replaced for humanitarianism, or to make the rowers more efficient?

For some reason whenever he tells number 41 that hate gives a man strength I can picture the Emperor from Star Wars telling that to Anakin and Luke.

Hard labour, sweat and the lash also gives a man strength. What I'd give to be number 42!

Lotta hate in the Consul's eyes, too.
Another part well played, Jack.

I don't know why a consul would be on some ship during a war. It would be like Obama driving in a tank in Iraq.
tinosnit 1 year ago
@tinosnit Must be his flagship or something. In the old days, the leaders, even kings, lead their army in the battlefield.
P.S. In the words of Lelouch from Code Geass if the king doesn't lead, his subjects won't follow.
