  • Watching this video again, they've all reached that city they sing about. Thank you.

  • WOW johnny cook sure can sing!

  • This video makes me happy, makes me smile and blesses me in so may ways!

  • He's smacking a D#5 with ease.

  • What a joy...what a joy.. just to hear these two giants of gospel sing together.

  • Vestal was an opera singer, soprano trained. Why didn't she win this competition? lol

  • The comments on this video are absolutely ridiculous. This clip has NOTHING to do with religion so why are you guys even discussing it in the first place? If you're not here to appreciate Cook's vocals then you came to the wrong place.

  • @chenispeese nothing to do with religion? looking for a city is a gospel song and these are gospel singers. i dont mean to be disrespectful but i dont really understand that logic. lol

  • @chenispeese It has everything to do with religion. It is an old gospel song. That said, I don't, unlike many, believe God will turn away gays at the gates, which is what the back and forth on here was about. Judge not lest ye be.

  • Johnny Cooke is absolutely amazing. Full voice, no falsetto hitting soprano Fs and still not hitting his ceiling. There is no southern gospel tenor that can hit those high notes for that long in sustained voice like Johnny could. Jerry Martin who sang with The Kingsmen and Dove Brothers could crank it out there that high, so could Jay Parrack and Brian Free, but not like Johnny could. He had the power and range and sustainability at that range, not just one or two quick notes!

  • Hoover4000! Thanks for this! I just want you to know...This is one of the most entertaining musical moments I've ever seen! I'm a New Jersey Italian Catholic..and I've never heard of either Vestal Goodman or Johnny Cook. But because of this video, (which a friend posted on Facebook)..I googled both of them and learned a lot about the wonderful careers of these two AMAZING singers. Thanks to youtube, I now know who these two wonderful singers are. I'm gonna download more of their music!

  • I was raised on Southern Gosple but now live in the Philippines where the music we use is Praise and Worship. This video blesses me more than I can describe. Vestal and Johnny both bring back a fire in me.

  • i can never watch this vid once or even half way, I have to watch the whole thing, it makes me so happy

  • Praise God!!!!!!!!I I love it!!!!!

  • i Cannot watch this vid enough! It always excites me and makes me love Vestal more!!!

She & Johnny are 2 of the best! What a great job!

    ur pal

    Gull!

  • I'm looking for Jesus first then that city

  • That's just Plain Ole GOOD!!! Amen!

  • I know I have watched this at least 30 times, and will probably watch it another 100's and 100's before I die! I just love the history, the legends and the levity !

  • What great fun and a great video! Thank you so much for posting this!

  • The Happy Goodmans were the Cream of Gospel music!! Sure miss them!

  • I made a Johnny Cook fan page. Look it up on Facebook.

  • Great song

  • Great duel

  • I love Vestal,but Johnny wins! lol =)

  • Johnny Cook was not as widely known in Gospel music as some other tenors, but he was very good. Give a listen to him do O What a Savior and Where The Roses Never Fade.

  • I wish feel-good southern gospel like this was more prevalent over the airways. We'd all get along better.

  • This is wonderful perfection... and thank you for this.......forget what any other may say...they need a life and a purpose in life...

  • I Don't Like This I LOVE IT

  • wow!!! he is amazing!!

  • I love this, "in this corner...You ain't brave enough." Made me laugh.

  • what homecoming is this

  • i just luv the way vestal sings ..i hope she is still alive so that i can see her sing ...RIP

  • Christians can have so much fun, but without the hangovers. There ain't no high like The Most High!

  • This brought back some touching memories to me....when I was a young child and into my young adulthood my family attended all the concerts at the Houston Music Hall and around the Houston area....I saw them do this song with the competition and WOW! this was great to enjoy again...Johnny Cook has to be the greatest tenor of all time...David Phelps reigns in 2nd in my opinion! Thanks for posting...what a blessing I have gotten from this post!

  • hahaha this is such fun to watch...excellent, thanks for uploading :-)

  • WOW! I love & miss ya, Johnny.

  • I don't know how many times I have watched this. Johnny had a great gift, so happy he chose to use it for the Lord. I don't see how the angels could sing prettier. Thanks to all who post his music. I wish I could have them all without searching all over YouTube for them. But I will take them however I get them.

  • Mark 12:31

  • i just love vestal!!!

  • This video is a perfect example of high comedic art along with music and how some people from the underclasses live. I can't see them at La Scala!

  • @richarddabney At La Scala, no, not literally, because they are all in Heaven. And not in your mind's eye, either, that venue is for a completely different type of performance. I don't get how that somehow "disqualifies" them from being valid or authentic. Thank the Lord He doesn't see ANY of us as a member of the "underclass."

  • this was an awesome concert!! they also did this in mobile, alabama. i was a kid & my grandmother would follow them around wherever they went & my parents would take her lol. i loved it. wish they were still here.

  • I REALLY love this video. I've watched it a ton and it makes me laugh, gives me goosebumps, and gets me excited every time. I've had the words stuck in my head for days now (which is a good thing!) and I love it. Thank you SO much for posting all these videos. Such a blessing.

  • @EmmieMariesAuntie I could listen to this all the time You can hear the Lord In Vestals Voice love it Thank you so much for sharing

  • Jesus is coming back real soon,or we could die tomorrow,HOPE YOUR READY TO MEET JESUS.

  • I could sing up to Vestal's second time.

  • Can some one tell me why Johnny Cook died so young? He was such a wonderful tenor. Yes, he was amazing!! I looked him up and saw he died at 53? WHY? He was a great talent.

  • @Absynthe12 : Jesus was a great man and still amazing, and yet he was called home at the age of about 33 years... Only God has the reason...

  • I don't get how a trained woman cannot sing as high as a man. Shouldn't she be able to go into the stratosphere? As a female, her voice is naturally higher. . .

  • @AtariMaxiToriyama Well, first of all, she was not trained! But it's more about how phenomenally high Johnny Cook could sing, one of those rare tenors who could do that. (I see by your post a week later that you could stay with Vestal through her second delivery, then had to drop out. "If it was easy everybody could do it!"). I always enjoy coming back to see this one.

  • it never gets old!

  • awesome!

  • 277,655 on 11/12/10 at 11:35 pm CST.

  • Love it after 10 times in a row and remember we are all bound for a city of heaven if you have trusted in the blood of Christ where we can hear Vestal and Johnny do this one again in heavenly person.

  • Her voice sends chills "}

    What a gift "}

  • I love this music. It is amazing!

  • why can't you people just enjoy the music? everybody has different views no body will know who is right until the end, so just enjpy the music and stop fighting, you all might be wrong.

  • @brokeback52 I couldn't agree with you more...

Just something to think about-"If you are right, and I am wrong, you will have all eternity to remind me; don't start now."

  • A blessed video, Hoover. But how sad and "christian" some of the comments. Geez. I only wish they'd list their church so I'd be sure to not go there.

  • If you love the ole' Happy Goodman's - you are going to love this vintage video- Ole Saucy Vestal gives the ole tenor boy a run for his money!!! I do love a great Tenor and steel guitar- CHECK THIS OUT

  • No fair! Vestel's hair helped her hit the high notes! ;-) This clip is FANTASTIC, fun, and memorable. Thank you for posting it!

  • LOVE IT!

  • This has to be my favorite of all time

  • Oh man, this takes me back. It was in Mae's Cabaret in downtown Jackson, MS in 1977 at my first gay bar visit when I heard this toe-tapping gospel song being lip-synched by the "thick" owner of the bar dressed in a flowing blue dress, hanky in hand, and wigs piled on top of his head just like Vestal. I fell in love with The Happy Goodmans then and there. I followed their career to it's end. They blessed me and "sainted millions" of others along their glorious way to that City. I shed a tear or

  • Fantastic energy! Nothin' like a little "friendly" competition! :)

  • i had no idea this singing contest with this song went back to the Goodmans thanks a million

  • Wow. I just read the post from 4 months ago. I don't see the problem. Go Figure.

LOVE ALL YOUR VIDEOS / POSTS hoover4000.

    God Bless.

  • O I just love this, it had me smiling & kinda giggling all the way thru. The expressions on their faces are priceless!! I hadn't seen this one before & it was most certainly worth watching. Thank you HOOVER4000 for posting this!! Thank you HAPPY GOODMANS for sharing your talents with the world......you are truely MISSED!!!!

  • But, Vestal is 1000 times better than ANY DEMCON or pile of tea bags. I sure do miss them!!!

  • I read somwhere that The Happy Goodmans performed for President Carter. Is this true? However, here in Charlotte, the Democrats are courting the DNC to hold it's convention here in 2012. This song "rings" a bit political, if you will. "Looking for a city, where will never die...." They should have used that as a line-LOLOL!!

  • Vestal was beautiful when she was younger. This song will never lose it's appeal.

  • O My God, what a wonderful song, I sing tinor but never that high, he is blessed.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Donald

  • I have to come back and listen to this video from time to time there is something about this one that sends goose bumps down my spine and it is a lovely song, I can listen to this forever it makes me think of our heavenly God who died for us.

  • How sad that this wonderful music is accompanied by your bickering comments...

  • I LOVE THIS!! WHO WOULD'T LOVE THE GREATEST SOUTHERN GOSPEL MUSIC GROUP TO EVER GRACE A STAGE!! I MISS THE Happy Goodman's!!!.

    Judy Davidson

  • I had a huge smile on my face after watching this, But then I read below and my smile was gone! SAD. Peace

  • amazing

  • I love Vestal! You can tell when she sings; her voice is a gift from God!

  • This is such a wonderful video! Praising the Lord & having fun while doing it.Thanks for posting it for all of us to enjoy :)

  • Such great great times . They were friends of my mom and dad . Sadly missed

  • one of my favorite drag queens used to do this one -- hallelujah!

  • @hoover4000 I was always told that God did not make us a judge but he made us a mighty fine fruit inspector.. lol

  • Thank you for posting this. What a blessing to see Vestal's career of serving the Lod.

  • I love Vestal - but is that ALL of her hair piled up there ??

  • just happened across this video and saw rlmelco's ongoing attacks on your "discernment" so I looked at his profile on which he features Rod Parsley and Jentezen Franklin as pillars of theological truth......so much for his ideas on discernment!

  • @rlmelco..why dont you just leave hoover alone she does a great job with all of these videos and doesnt deserve someone yelling at her bc she not doing what you want..just leave her alone

  • Love the "jacked to Jesus" hairstyles! don't see that anymore!

  • Thank you Lord for giving us talented singers .... praise the Lord ... thank you also for posting this song .. really miss Vestal, but she is with the Lord singing and praising him ...

  • That's amazing!

  • We spend all our lives judging others when all that matters is when we will be judged in the blink of an eye from the God all mighty. I am guilty of it to, but im only human.

  • Since you refuse to even honor my request to view the video or to allow all of my posts to appear, I can only pray that God open your eyes to His truth concerning the subject of judgment. It is clear in John 7:24, and common sense says that your position is incorrect. God bless. Hope to meet you in the rapture.

  • @rlmelco you shouldnt assume things you know and honestly you kind of have come off as self-righteous. Are you aware of how many comments I recieve a day?? I've tried very hard to keep up but I also hold down a job. Only God knows my spiritual condition as it should be. But since we are throwing out judgements, I will pray also that you realize your own mistakes instead of everyone elses, so I can see YOU in the rapture. Now lets just agree to disagree.

  • @hoover4000 it is one of the best

  • @hoover4000 He ways gay and cute

  • @rlmelco your sort of getting on my nerves. Would you mind putting a cork in it and get off hoover's back? thanks so much :)

  • @rlmelco what rapture?

  • they are blessed whoever this person his should take the advice and Judge not what have we all done for God lately?

  • In context, Matthew 7:1 is saying that we can only measure by the same measures we use to measure ourselves. It is impossible to go through life without judging, but we are only required to not have double standards between how we judge others and how we judge ourselves.

  • @rlmelco How about you both have this conversation privately...

  • What a hairdo! And then see hers!

  • LOVE THAT DO!

  • Why are there comments on this video about homosexuality? Johnny Cook was happily married. He sang tenor, but he was NOT gay.

  • Love it!!!!! You can't find good Gospel singer like this!!!!!!

  • incredible tenor

  • That was fun...

  • I'm so happy I found this! I knew Vestal could get those high notes when she was younger. What an amazing voice!

  • ohhh vestal reminds me of my great aunt jean!! what a beautiful smile

  • He has such laughing eyes...

  • That was fun...

  • One of my favorite videos. I just have to drop back and watch it from time to time. It always blesses me. Thanks, Melissa.

  • I agree!

  • Just proof that they loved God and had a sense of humor thanks for posting.

  • One of the BEST Gospel songs ever!

  • what are they all laughing about at 0:36-0:37

  • @EclecticGurl13

Someone in the audience yelled and they all laughed. If you listen closely, you can hear it.

  • Are they feeding the tree now? Was that really all her hair or a wig??

  • johnny cook reminds me of one of my cuzins=) man i can't wait to see him in heaven!=D!

  • A lot of Christian folks enjoy Goodman Family music, as I do, so I thought I would share something. I first learned of the Goodmans via dancing to "Looking for a City" and "Amazing Grace" each Sunday at a large (300+) gay Country/Western dance here in San Francisco. The floor is packed and many sing along with the music. So please think when you discriminate and judge us. These songs reflect our faith and culture and many of us praise God, singing every Sunday. Merry Christmas.

  • @torrigino ya maybe try reading the bible not discriminating but i want you to go to heaven and the bible says homosexality is a sin

  • @firefighterc931 so is eating shell fish, having sex with a wife while she is menstruating, and many, many other activities that are taken for granted today under the "new law". In the end but by grace and mercy -none of us is capable of meriting salvation or maintaining salvation. Thankfully the work or Jesus Christ allows all sinners, through Christ, to come into the presence of a holy God making us all perfect before Him.

  • @torrigino Thanks how I found it!. I love this song, its so very very fun to dance to, and everyone sings along.

  • Is it just me, or did YouTube eat the left channel audio?

  • Love those jackets. Wonder if they are velvet or velveteen?

  • im going to start wearing my hair like vestal

  • Whoa...what hair!

  • JESUS!@

  • I remember this

  • i find it kinda funny that Vestal never really got any higher, only louder lol

  • You're an idiot. It got higher each time they sang this.

  • Her hair got higher,though!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • Are you serious? You must be tone deaf...

    or stupid.

  • Two of the best voices ever..God Bless you both, we miss you !!

  • Just tihnkin about hearing this in Heaven :)

  • hey hoover what video is this from?

  • the goodmans live in texas

  • i have been following southern gospel music for over 20 yrs and i have heard many many tenor singers. In my opinion Johnny Cook is the best.

  • Enjoy the music, keep non-related issues offf this site!

  • Im suprised she couldnt get any higher than him lol

  • How does it get any better? I first saw Johnny Cook when Vestal as out after Her heart problem. I have the record from that show at the State Fair Music hall in Dallas.

  • oh wow i didnt know he had died dose anyone know what he died from ?

  • @tyty13428

I wasn't sure you ever received an answer to your question re: how Johnny died. He died in 2000 of kidney failure.

  • I enjoyed this singing of Johnny and Vestal..both did a good job of singing.

Why all this other crap is posted here another thing. Do some people really listen to the singing? RIP Vestal and Johnny....we miss you both.

  • oh my!! johnny cook is amazing... but vestals still my fav! i think its funny how she sticks her tongue out at the end... lol

  • Some of the best music I have ever heard. It is doubly disappointing that you people cannot stop arguing over these issues when the issues aren't even the point of the video. I myself am so conservative I frown upon the use of fire; I still am not up to debating issues which we will never be able to settle when I am trying to relax and listen to some good old music. All of you: Keep your debates to blogs or Helium.

  • Johnny Cook....what a great tenor

  • The true First Lady Of Southern Gospel Music....Vestal Goodman

  • I think if she didn't get so tickled at the others, she coulda definately done it!

  • God bless Vestal. What a great talent and person. She is surely missed.

  • Johny cook is awsome and he won this match he is an awsome singer

  • i think vestal quit to soon. she could so kick his butt.

  • I come back every few months to rate this . I love them!!!!

  • These coomments have nothing at ALL to do with the song. LIghten up people.

  • one comment... God loves the sinner, but hates the sin.

  • agree

  • Gawn sista ,tell it like it T I is.

The higher the hair the closer to GOD.

  • Wow, you people are scary. Have any of you actually read the bible? I mean the whole bible. Not the verses that fit your agenda. You do realize that the reason the Leviticus code exists was as a means of promoting procreation among tribes at the time. At the time homosexuality was fairly accepted and more men slept with each other than women. Its a COMPLETELY different culture which can't be applied to modern day in translation. It also says you can sell your children into slavery. Promote that.

  • AMEN! If you are going to expert verses to fit an agenda then you MUST do it with all of them...this is will be debated for hundreds of years to come and everyone will have their own opinion. I say this...clean up your own closet before you stick your nose into other peoples business. "Judge not less ye be judged." It is not for us to decide...live your own life..be kind to others.."do unto others as you would have them do unto you"...

  • The higher the hair, the closer to God!!!

  • Wasn't it "Shay-Shay LaFem" that performed this in Pensacola back in the mid 80"s? She had the greatest WIG!!!

  • I'm dressing up as Vestal for Halloween!!!!

  • Johnny Cook...WOW!!!! What vocals...that kid could sing...so sad he left this world very young....one of this world's greatest tenor voices EVER!

  • I love love LOVE this song!!!! It's encouraging, uplifting and hilarious!

  • wow what a great song and two great voices. some don not know how to act on the posts. you karen are no ones judge. i belive you should do unto others as you would have them do unto you!

  • Well, you know what else was preached for years before the church finally woke up? Slavery. One day the church will follow the example of Jesus and express real love and accept all of God's children.

  • This is the first video I have ever seen of ...

Johnny Cook ... Wow ... a Great tenor.

While looking through more info on him I was sad to know he passed away several years ago.

    Even so ...

I will continue to look for vids to hear his voice ....

  • is johny alive>>?? i would some feed back

  • no he passed away

  • This is fabulous! I never seen Vestal in her younger days. Loved it!

  • I Love johnny cook & vestal they are great here on this song I love him he is so wonderful Go Johnny you are the best here...

  • "Looking For a City" is performed at Nickiemoto's Drag-a-Maki Dinner Show every Monday night in Atlanta by "Bubba D. Licious" with a "hanky" personally autographed by Vestal. PTL!!!

  • This song is played every Sunday nioght at Cafe Lafitte (a faaabulous neighborhood gay bar) on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

  • In case any of you haven't read Vestal's autobiography, she writes in her book about her gay fans and in a delightfully nonjudgmental way. Of course, to Vestal's other fans, the thought that there might actually be gay Christians who are fans of Southern Gospel Music would probably be a huge surprise, but we're here just the same!

  • I'm a gay male that loves this upbeat christian gospel music. I have run across very few like myself and it was nice to read your post. Thanks!

  • Hey--gay or straight WELCOME to this site and blog--God Loves us all, and this music is meant to lift

our hopes and strengthen our faith. I hope it does the

same for you, and hope you give your heart and soul over to the Lord--YOU would be a blessing and asset to SO MANY. God Bless you in your listening.

  • just cause Vestal had friends that were gay doesn't mean they are christians no true christian can be able and get into heaven face the facts it has been preached that way for years and God hasn't changed his mind on the subject and never will change on this subject God is the same now as years ago and back when i was a kid it was wrong and it still is wrong like it or not

  • All I can say is Karen -- YOU better HOPE that Saint Peter isn't as NARROW minded as you ... or you'll be turned away at the gate ...

  • I know that I am a Christian and also I have the Bible to back up how I believe. True Christians feel and know that Gays will not get into Heaven. I have very dear friend who is gay and it kills me to know he won't make unless he changes his ways. Sorry you all are so wrapped up in your life styles that you homestly feel you are on your way to the Promise Land SORRY YOU AREN"T..

  • what about your lifestyle, did you chose it ? your hypocrisy makes me want to vomit. you are the kind of false devot jesus was denouncing and got killed for denouncing. if tehre is such thing as heaven and if jesus words are to be believed then 1/no problem with homosexuality (he NEVER mentioned it)2 / you're going straight to hell because you are an hypocrite 3/ what about divorce ? jesus was WAY harder on that one.

fuck you and all the other false devots if there is a hell you'll end up there
