  • There is a philosphical issue here, making a song your own and rewriting it to suit other idioms and contexts are different matters.

The first is about investing your artistry in the song the latter about parody (in its true sense not simply the idea as a skit or sketch from an original).

    CASE :

Some of Bob Dylan's early work was parody, eg Boots fof Spanish Leather , he was influenced by Liam Clancy , they used to drink together in the White Horse Tavern in Greenwich village.

  • No problem with that. It's a well delivered song.

INFO PJ McCall's forte was writing historically based songs (eg Kelly the Boy from Kilane ). Often set in Wexford where his family came from. In Lowlands he has Wexford place names Fethard on Sea and Carrick on Bannow , theme is "continental wine importing". The time period is 1690 - 1720 (Clue -Jack Marlbrook reference). On localisation , a rewrite of Burns' "Banks of Doon " as the "Shores of the Hudson" would be OK, yes?

  • Nice version of Lowlands Low, but they've Scottyfied the song, it was written by PJ McCall an Irish songwriter about smuggling from Wexford during the reign of Queen Anne.

Get the original words on Mudcat.

Check out the latest version of this song, google for Dan Milner.

  • sorry but everone tries to make a song their own Bitter Withy DID arrange the song on a SCOTTISH theme nothing lost as ive got Liam Clancy singing the same song BOTHin my opinion are superb!!

    OK !! my friend??

  • What a beautiful song!

  • The Bitter Withy seem to've been a great team. I remember Mum told me she was the one who had to do all the driving all night to & back from gigs while Tich & Andy snoozed in the back... Then one night in her tiredness, she nearly hit a cow in the road, jammed on the breaks and the 2 snorers tumbled through to the front. haha.

  • Thanks for posting this great version of Sailing in the lowlands low. I'd put it up there in same class as the Clydesiders version. Well done :)

  • Having lost my copy of the album, this is sheer heaven!

  • pity that yhey never made another album !BUT Lesley is still writing songs Andy isnow living in Spain Tich has had health problems but his cd from 2008 is absolutely great its called "Shanghaied" Produced by Dick gaughan
