Hi Becky, thanks for all the wonderful information you shared on growing hydroponic herbs. I became an avid fan of hydroponics because of the tons of benefits it can provide growers. Now, I am planning on building a simple hydroponic system where I can grow herbs and tomatoes without spending so much on hydroponic kits. Although I think it will be easier for me if a buy a pre-made system from hydro shops, I think I can save more if I build my homemade system. :)
@LilMooCow its pronounced err-b in the united states and most of canada... its her-b in most of europe and other places, especially former british colonies.
How much does that hydroponic setup cost? For under $20 you could get a big bag of Fertilome and some fish emulsion and kelp extract, and you could grow herbs equally well without having to worry about getting the pH right or your spent hydroponic solution contributing to excess algae growth downstream. For a little more money you could use coconut coir growing media which would be more environmentally friendly than the peat based Fertilome.
Thanks for the post Becky. At first I was thinking what some of the other posters were-that is was just an "unpack and set-up" video. But I learned a few things that I can take back to my own hydroponic garden, and learning is what it is all about.
Check out Aquaponics - which merges fish aquaculture with hydroponics. Your set up seems ideally suited to introducing some fish to the reservior which feed the plants and produce nutrients, reducing the need for artificial chemicals.
@Knight8365 came here to post this. if you don't want to eat the fish, you could probably get some coy and make it into a little pond area. i really want to make an aquaponics farm, but currently i lack the resources.
There's a LOT of room for -MAKE-ing your own Hydroponic grow unit. I made one quick and cheap out of a fountain pump and some tupperware. I just sprinkled mint seeds on a perlite aggregate (dirt substitute...sort of) and it did fairly well with Advanced Nutrient brand nutrients. I wish I'd taken pictures... but for anyone who found this interesting, look into making your own! Great video none the less, shows how easy it is to get into Hydroponic gardening.
try using organic nutrients and just clean the res more often so you dont get slimy buildup it works but its more work 4 u but better tasting herbs in the end!
Hey Lady, I thought the point was to actually "build" and not just assemble an existing product. Is General Hydroponics at least paying for the publicity?
Anyway, I like your video, specially the sketch for planning the layout of the herb garden. Is there a reason to dispose the herbs in a special manner? Don't they all get well along with eachother?
me ha gustado mucho el cultivo hidropónico, en andalucía hacen eso con los tomates, (Almería) con grandes cosechas en invernaderos. Saludos desde África
Wow, that is SO not eco-friendly. How many gallons of contaminated water do you have to discard every week or 2 (I assume that is what you mean by "change out the nutrient solution")? And does that pump run 24/7?
I guess I don't quite understand the purpose of home hydroponics. Water is pretty heavy, and you can contain any drainage from a traditional potted plant, and that thing is HUGE compared to a window-sill trough.
@ppardee You can dispose of spent hydroponic solution by using it on plants that are growing in soil, but there is a lot of potential for pollution if people don't dispose of it correctly. I think the main value of home hydroponics is to satisfy people's desire to mess around with gadgets.
@GauravA42 Unfortunately this unit looks to big to fit into a wardrobe that has been equipped with a high intensity lighting system. (To keep the plants pest free, you understand.)
And how many people do you think see this and go, "AWESOME! Let me go plant a rosemary garden!" The only thing that could've made this video more suggestive is if they'd posted it four days from now.
@razgriz4977 I was like 'cilantro!', I think I even posted it earlier so yeah there are people that only want to use this for it's intended purpose. Besides you'd get busted pretty quickly trying to grow something illegal on a roof.
@Craydon Hah! Cilantro is actually too awesome. There's this asian restaurant I go to that uses cilantro like mexican restaurants use chili powder. And it's too good. At any rate, yeah, I actually have some rosemary and aloe and basil and whatnot, but they work just fine in flowerpots. I wouldn't actually use this for anything illegal :P
I can think of an immediate improvement on this system. A solar powered pump would work well. You could just have the solar array float a deep cycle battery. I see a project coming up!
I have to agree that it would have been much more awesome to see you build an equivalent to the Rainforest 236 rather than just setting it up and offering some tips on growing hydroponically.
But thanks for the vid, there are some great tips here for those completely new to hydroponics.
The real question is, can you build this type of system yourself, without using a store bought "kit". To bad solar panels weren't cheaper. That'd be an awesome addiction.
You guys really need to sell a hydroponic kit at Makershed. Mabey just a single plant kit or somthing. That would be pretty cool. As always, thanks for all of the great videos too.
While this is interesting, this isn't really a "make" video. It just shows a person giving a few tips, and assembling and setting up storebought materials.
With all due respect, this is not a MAKE video. I was really excited when I read the title for the video because I thought it was going to show us how build an Earthbox, or another type of hydroponics device.
@ProductionDesignrMAX I agree. While I like watching all videos about hydroponics, I would have preferred to see a DIY video instead. These hydroponic kits are not cheap - and I'm all for cheap!
@ProductionDesignrMAX - "If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must start by creating the universe." - Carl Sagan
The idea of growing your own plants fits perfectly into the Maker philosophy. Buying the hydroponic kit for this purpose is not a "fail," any more than buying a soldering iron to use on your electronics projects. Are all your tools hand made by you, from iron ore that you mined yourself?
The video demonstrates an idea, not so much a method to make something. A hydroponic garden is a good *idea*, and there is nothing to state that we can't do something like this ourselves sans the kit (even if it seems like the right thing to do to support a company that would make such an underdog product).
neat invention but a pot with soil might be more useful and more eco friendly. also calcium is not a mineral, it is a ion dissolved in the water. It can form the mineral Calcite (CaCO3)
That looks like a lot of water to change every 7 days. I thought hydoponic gardens are to save water. I live in the arizona desert and I have a orange tree the lives on less water than that.
I wonder if this company gave this "system" to make for free so they would advertise their shit. If they hadn't, i bet this video would be about a home made setup.
I think it is safe to say that we are all watching this channel because of KipKay! :) Does she know that you can grow plants in a regular pot also for alot cheaper! It is good that she had a hose on the roof, or that would be a bit hard to fill.
Yea, MAKE you guys are going to have to redeem yourselves by actually MAKING something ....how about crafty herb garden on the cheap, using garage supplies ? im sure you can make that same system with a plastic toy bin, and a aquarium pump.
Hey Becky, will you loose any of the smell or flavor growing in water instead of soil? It just seems to me that those chemicals you added might not taste so good in the finished product. I have a yard in Iowa to grow in, but this would be great for my wife to play with in the winter. Thanks for showing how easy this is to setup.
@atcaleb actually it doesn't change a thing. The soil only acts like a sponge holding water and the nutrients in the soil dissolve via the water. By skipping the soil, your just having nutrients and water directly without the (soil sponge). NASA researches this method. Disney has a massive hydroponic greenhouse.
@atcaleb actualy hidroponic vegetables products taste better than the ones u grow on soil, thats because the plant only acces the nutrients it needs and nothing else
@tranceraver01 kinda, i think that videos like this are just to bring attention to things like this that most people would never think were invented. I have to admit, that thing is pretty simple yet ingenious since its impossible to grow anything if you live in a city...
It would be more interesting if the whole shebang was handmade from found objects. But I guess this is a good instructional on how to set up your store bought garden.
@cembry90@theodosiusng American English vs Almost every other dialect of English ... Guess "urb" would actually be the less frequent then. However, whichever way you want to pronounce herb, it doesn't make this video any more helpful: If you want to grow herbs in an urban setting, consider buying a kit: Not much craft required to make anything ... ho hum. Next video, please!
@domu888 thats the problem Americans don't speak English they speak American. that way you can make it up as you go along. much like americanism's (putting "ism" on the end of any word you like) and its funny because the word "americanism" is an americanism
I'm pretty sure any "herb" gardens made with this will not be able to be shown to you for legal reasons.

It would be more interesting if the whole shebang was handmade from found objects. But I guess this is a good instructional on how to set up your store bought garden.

@cembry90 @theodosiusng American English vs Almost every other dialect of English ... Guess "urb" would actually be the less frequent then. However, whichever way you want to pronounce herb, it doesn't make this video any more helpful: If you want to grow herbs in an urban setting, consider buying a kit: Not much craft required to make anything ... ho hum. @domu888 thats the problem Americans don't speak English they speak American. that way you can make it up as you go along. much like americanism's (putting "ism" on the end of any word you like) and its funny because the word "americanism" is an americanism
