  • The most amazing thing to me is the gorilla's ability to recognize space and time. Just hearing about how Michael could recount what happened to his mother years before is just fascinating. And I think Koko was right, too, when she said she thought gorilla's were smarter. Just because we don't fully understand some animals doesn't mean they are stupid. I can't stop watching these gorilla videos...I wish I could be a gorilla!

  • Its like teaching a Dog how to sit and stay. Its the same thing accept its a gorilla its just another beast.

  • @Machampion100 Yeah, it's just like teaching a human to comment about their cosy tunnelview perspectives.

  • @symbolt I didnt have to be taught to understand that its just another animal. Stop acting as if their not moron.

  • @Machampion100 I will not. I am a supporter of hominid rights.

  • Is that KOKO?

  • This is a cause I would give my left arm for. God why do i have to be so broke.

  • nice one!

  • Weekend at Koko's.

  • If it is, he looks tired. And stupid. Or dead.

  • That is not Koko at 27:00

  • I am sure that Francine and others always had the best for her but I think they had to try to make her a mother much earlier.I think that somehow they have taken a bit of her life in terms of living with other gorillas.

  • KOKO is two many times stronger than Mike Taison.

  • Around 3:30 :

"if you've got access to the internet"

    Wow :)

  • Dr. Phil?

  • idk if its taboo but yea koko needs some too and shes not a lesbian.. hurry this program up so she can have her own family before she dies...

  • I agree with you , I hope they will give Koko her freedom to have her own family.Sometimes I wonder wether she might be lonely and needs more gorillas around her.

  • @candiceevans1 YOU ARE JUST ANOTHER SELFISH HUMAN THAT CANNOT SEE BEYOND THEIR OWN SPECIES. THE MAJORITY OF HUMANS ARE EVIL AND SELFISH. ALL OF THE EVIL IN THIS WORLD IS FROM THE HANDS OF HUMANS.

  • Does anyone know the date of this talk? The upload is dated '08, but I know that Michael died several years before that, I think about 10 years ago or more.

  • @candiceevans1

well who cares sint it good that we finnaly sho respect to species other than humans

  • AMAZING..............

  • I need 7 million for a home as well.

Think of my plight in not having a cash pad with lots of bitches.

Heartless hippies need to make a donation.

  • Bald guy with mustache needs to just shave his head.

  • Fucking hippies littering the comments section with their militant veganism again. Go listen to some morrisey to sooth your malnourished minds. If you're a herbivore then you are fair prey for my next meal. You're just lucky it's illegal or we'd be raising you as cattle.

  • @jacksawild SICKO! YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM, YOU EVIL AND SELFISH HUMAN!

  • @STEPHIEGRL316 so are vegans not considered humans?

  • @candiceevans1

Helping homeless people won't disprove religion.

  • Go vegetarian

  • I would love to be friends with a gorilla.

  • @Musicposter4you you should move to the ghetto then. plenty of them there.

  • @pastulioxx1 That was racist, stupid and uncalled for. Geez, you trolls, always twisting peoples' words. Go comment on a Justin Bieber video, or something.

  • @Musicposter4you thats not a bad idea.....

  • @pastulioxx1 LOL

  • Leaving aside the moral issues, from the standpoint of an economist, meat consumption is extremely inefficient and unsustainable.

It takes 16 lbs of grain and soybeans to produce 1 lb of beef.

The human body, in any case, doesn't process meat very well. In fact, decades of reaffirmed medical research has proven that meat based diets cause many diseases such as colon, prostate, and breast cancer, erectile dysfunction, heart disease, etc...

More meat production is also drives up oil prices.

  • Koko is one of the most incredible animals (including humans) I've ever heard of. The more I read and hear about her and her trainers, the more amazing it is.

  • Ohhhh man!!! If I was a celebrity I would seriously donate the less than half of $7 million that they need for Koko's home : )

I really hope she gets to become a mother before she dies : (

  • @femmefatale1990 I agree with you .This program has been going on for such a long time and I believe they will always do the best for her but she is a gorilla and needs her own species to be accompanied with.I hope she will be a mother soon , we will see!

  • @femmefatale1990 ya, it's totally dissapointing how little celebrities actively help with these kinds of things right?

  • @SHIBBYiPANDA I know. I mean, Shatner could do something. It'd be amazing if Koko got to teach her babies sign language.

  • @femmefatale1990 ya that would be amazing and seems totally possible to me. All that money and Koko has no baby...

  • @SHIBBYiPANDA well, she has until her early 40's to mate. Unfortunately, they've had no luck finding her one, and they've tried. Gorillas don't just mate with any male/female. They need to form a relationship like humans. Her and Michael thought of one another as friends/siblings. They never mated.

  • @femmefatale1990 dam that sucks... How old is she now??? Why don't they just adopt for her?

  • @SHIBBYiPANDA She's in her early 30's (over 32). They could but I'm sure they want her to have her own babies, so that they can possibly inherit her intelligence though I'm sure they'd be willing to adopt for her but I don't know...Koko would have to choose.

  • I don't know how ppl can stray from such a fascinating subject as Koko, but for the record, human dentition is just abnormal. We're losing molars (wisdom teeth) and our canines are a joke. Our teeth have been influenced by our intelligence, just like our strength. Chimps have huge canines, and they're many times stronger. We dropped that b/c a spear and a fire proved better than teeth. Lets watch Koko and accept that we're freaks of nature and I'm going to eat whatever I can. Screw teeth.

  • Chimps canines are small in comparison with gorillas, horses, Chinese Water Deer, Musk deer and baboons.

  • yes, but ours are even smaller than theirs. I used chimps b/c they are the most closely related. Compared to gorillas we're even more feeble. So technically our teeth don't fall into a proper herbivore or carnivore's set. Soon we'll be toothless, which is annoying. Like me, I am missing twp premolars and the lateral incisors. Apparently my genes don't feel that teeth are essential to my survival. I would have chosen differently but I like my brain too.

  • oh and horses do not have large canines. Like all proper herbivores and even some omnivores (bears) they have the gap between incisors and molars where the canines have shrunken and the premolars or shearing teeth have been lost.

  • Horses have bigger canines than chimps. Camels even bigger.

  • Hey, my name KnuckleBallz. Im an Urban Chimpanzee from Montreal who looking for single female ape. I like a girl who is big and good with communication. I like any kind of race like Orangutans, Chimps and ever better, the gorillas because they are nice but I hate the Baboon because they're bunch of jackass who got red asses.

  • @KnuckleBallz you should move to new york. plenty of your kind there. even better, no baboons. those are shot on sight.

  • @pastulioxx1 HUMANS ARE SO SELFISH AND EVIL - THAT'S WHY THEY GO TO HELL AND ANIMALS DO NOT.

  • @STEPHIEGRL316 the hell do you know where animals go. I've never heard of animals having souls. don't speak out of your ass woman. I know where many animals go. and that's through sewer pipes after they have been digested.

  • @pastulioxx1 and you go in a box in the dirt or are burnt up. way to express your arrogance.

  • @RalucadnelpS you should become a vegan.

  • Thanks, this is a great interview.

  • lets say we release everything into the wild and become vegan - another animal would just claim dominance and continue the food chain from where we left off. morality has no relevance, so don't act so self-righteous.

there is no right way to live or think, so why dont we all just stfu and let each other do as they please?

  • If you studied ethics academically, you'd see how you're wrong. "let each other do as they please" - so we shouldn't interfere with anyone no matter what? So if they rape children that's just an equally valid way of life? No. Interference is justified in the name of rationality and compassion. If you're interested, there are many text books available on the subject.

  • @cgrezo99 if it weren't for man feeding on animals. many of us wouldn't be here today.

  • i'm love how the last ninety-something comments are void of any relevance to the above video.

all of you seem to be so absolutist in your arguments, when clearly its just an opinion. people, its FOOD.

  • What does Soylent Green have to do with anything?

  • Trying to feed a planet of 7 billion people who only eat vegetables would precipitate an eco-catastrophe because it would take far more land to feed those billions of new vegetarians than it does to feed cattle now. People would eat more bulk to get the same nuitrition than they do now and release more methane gas than they do now. Vegetarians need to take these things into account before they advocate world vegan domination. Some meat should be in most people's diets. Not much, but some.

  • A field can feed 20 vegetarians or 2 meat eaters. It is universally acknowledged that vegetarian food is far more efficient. The process of farming meat to eat is one tenth the efficiency of farming vegetables to eat. Also, scientists proved decades ago there is no need for meat in a healthy diet. You clearly haven't researched your opinion but just like to reinforce your own assumption.

  • The analysis regarding how much grass and grain it takes to convert to meat protein is not taking into account the vast number of humans who would need to eat plant material. Almost 7 billion people would require far more agricultural product than grazing animals need pasture. People are not gorillas and are not made to graze constantly and chew constantly to get their necessary protein. Farming would decimate the planet of most wild lands of all kinds.

  • Dude, honestly, do some research - every scientist, economist, anthropolgist etc agrees that a world eating meat uses up far far more resources than a vegetarian population. It's just a fact. Look at the declarations by UN scientists or the World Health Organisation if you're interested.

  • Why is this all about veganism, anyhow?

Why not about intra-species communication? Do we have trouble even talking amongst ourselves?

    hmmmmmm...

Naizgroth: you have a beautiful mind.

Cawtawba2: if you are a "lifelong" vegan, DO NOT eat any meat; you are not bacterially prepared. If you are a doctor you should know this. I eat meat (fish or venison) maybe twice a month. I don't need much.

Intellinja: You are Correct sir. I would not be here typing this if our ancestors had avoided meat.

  • That guy she's talking to looks like a Muppet of Dr. Phil.

  • This whole argument here about eating meat or being vegan is ludicrous. If all the world suddenly became vegetarian there would be no forests left on earth. Every square meter of land would need to be under cultivation. But beyond that, the authoritarian vegan approach is entirely wrong and out of step with progress. We don't need vegan dictators telling us what to eat, it's one of the reasons why vegans get so much anger directed towards them. Be a little humble, OK? It's a much better way.

  • word!

same goes for feminist and religious zealots... if you want to get your point across, be more friendly

  • Not so. Livestock need plants to eat and grow, and unless they live only on the grass in their pasture (which is uncommon these days), we have to grow grain to feed them. But cows aren't perpetual motion machines; a lot of energy gets lost in the conversion from plant to meat, so it takes a LOT of plant material to produce meat. Vegetarianism and veganism actually save plants; it takes way more land to sustain a meat-eater than it does to sustain a vegetarian.

  • The academics from the top universities in the world who've studied the topic disagree with you. Sounds to me like you didn't even bother to check the facts before telling people they're wrong. Be a little humble, OK?

  • his sideburns suck

  • I love steaks. You fucking vegans can't take that away from me!!

  • Wow, pretty one sided youtube page.

  • "Chronic Wasting Disease" is enough to make me go vegetarian.

  • I am a doctor who has studied diet extensively and I can reassure you that you are wrong to believe that animal flesh is good for you.

  • If you had the intelligence of THIS lifelong vegan, you'd figure out why I'm Right! Veganism is good for you, the animals AND this planet. You may contact me privately for excellent information on the subject - otherwise you're obviously not bothering to use your limited brains to the best of your abilities.

  • Strict vegitarianism can lead to mild to severe anemia. True, Vegetarians are less prone to heart disease between the ages of 20-65. However, vegetarians over 65 are much more likely to develop acute anemic hypoxia, resulting in catastrophic organ failure.

A balanced diet of both meat, veggies, and fruits will lead to optimal longevity.

  • There's NOTHING in animal products, essential for primates, that doesn't exist or cannot be synthesized by symbiotic bacteria from vegetable matter, NOTHING ! ! !

  • Spore, molds and fungus. In the space age we'll all live on yeast.

  • How about Soylent Green?

Solves lots of problems at the same time!

Maybe primitive-religeous man isn't ready. As far as I'm concerned, when i'm dead - Bon appetite!

    Anyhow...

    Gorillas are sweet people.

    Scary, but real sweet.

    Same with Bonobos.

These beings arent that much different from us...of course they can learn SIGNING! Why did it take years of study to find this out?

I've met plenty of cats and a few dogs who were up for it but had no hands to articulate, nor the interest.

  • ~human meat is the only meat that can be fully digested...

~"cannibals" (the original tribes) only ate people that have died, its a proper way of recycling our bodies back into the environment and it makes sure no other predators can put the tribe in danger.

~i think eating meat is very human... its recycling life into life. better than turning all of our dead into unbiodegradable embalmed-landfills

  • you self-righteous twat. Claiming superior intelligense based on your little politically correct niche lifestyle choice, i don't know where you think you get off. Hindus and Buddhists choose to be vegetarian out of their respect for life, not out of bigotry.

  • Being vegetarian doesn't make you smarter...but statistically vegetarians have higher IQs than non-vegetarians. Make of that what you will...

  • lol... you guys are so funny.

If it wasn't for the proteins that early humans acquired from meat eating, then our brains would not be the size and have the capacity that we have today.

Also - don't you think more animals should be fighting for their animal rights... i mean, if they really wanted them or needed them... they'd do something about it...

    amirite? jk...jk...

I do wish to ask the community - preferably some one with proof - do these greater apes have the ability to think humorously?

  • For information on why I've realised that what we have been taught about humans being omnivores is wrong, and why I've come to the conclusion that humans are naturally 'vegan', please contact me privately.

  • I hope koko teaches other Gorillas how signing works so it causes a mass effect where they all communicate on a more sophisticated level.. It seems they soon could evolve into the next stage and advance to a higher level. From what I seen and know, Gorillas could be the next human like species from what we can teach them. Next thing you know when we leave earth to explore the final frontier, (space) they would take our place here and consider us as gods living in the heavens.. history repeats..

  • lol

  • It's amazing how people have such weird beliefs - veganism IS healthy, and the proper diet for humanity. Humanity is also 'designed' to feel compassion for others - so what happened to YOU to lack that love? I guess you learning to eat animal flesh caused that lack in you. Your tastebuds are less healthy than your heart.

  • Humans by nature are Omnivores.. enough said. I can see how it is indeed inhumane but thats how it naturally is..

  • How old is this tape? Didn't this ape already have a baby? I think I saw footage of a signing ape who taught her infant some signs.

  • No, I've visited her website recently and she's still hoping for a baby but doesn't have one. Maybe you saw a video of her with one of her toys and it looked like a live baby?

  • No, I think I know the difference between a living being and a doll. But now that I think about it, it was a signing chimp, not a gorilla.

  • I hope I didn't offend you. I just thought Koko's body might have blocked it from the camera.

  • lol. he is so boring.

  • vegan is a unrealistic and a very unhealthy way of life. EVERY SINGLE VEGAN I'VE EVER MET LOOKS UNHEALTHY, THEY HAVE NO ENERGY, THEY USUALLY HAVE AN IRON DEFICIANTCY AND THEY ARE ALWAYS SICK. I love animals and I very much so believe in animals rights, but I've never seen a "humane" kill by a predator. I've never started eating meat while the animal was still breating and moving like many predators do. Just becasue we can survive on plant life doesn't mean we should sacrifice our health EAT MEAT

  • kuchmonster wrote: "Just because we can survive on plant life doesn't mean we should sacrifice our health..."

    -------------------------

Please, saintly humans, don't sacrifice(even if it's questionable) your innocent lives for vegan cause. EAT MEAT, DRINK BLOOD, ENJOY THE FEAST ! ! !

  • Most vegans choose that lifestyle as a "moral" statement.

Vegan is not a natural diet. In plentiful times like today it's possible to live like that but 1000 years when food was scarce whatever you one could get his hands on was eaten. "Give us this day our daily bread" wasn't just a platitude. In the natural state humans eat meat. It's good for us to be thoughtful of the creatures we dominate but our own kin and kind are starving in other lands. Reconsider your morality, vegans.

  • From my own experience I always had vegan morality, even when I was eating milk products, meat, eggs, etc, etc...because I hadn't any other choice. But after I got the opportunity of vegan diet, I realized, and that eating dead animals REALLY TASTED like EATING DEAD ANIMALS.

  • Um, of course eating a dead animal would taste like a dead animal... What would you think it should taste like? An apple? a pear? Lettuce??? What you realized was that meat tasted the way it should... Dumbass.

  • I have many vegan friends and they are very healthy. Human's are NOT 'natural' omnivores. We are not equipped with the dentition of natural predators (sic) nor are humans equipped to kill. The human digestive system is designed for grazing, not to be bombarded with huge meals 3 times a day.

By the way I'm a meat eater.

  • You only have to look at our teeth in order to see that we are omnivores. Canines and incisors. What would a herbivore need those for?

Chimpanzees, our closest living relative, also have a similar oral structure. And they ARE omnivores, with the males getting much of their nutrition from small monkeys, and females getting some nutrition from ants.

  • But we are natural omnivores. All primates are. All our ancesters had the same instinct to kill for eat but they also ate plants and fruits. As soon as we started to grow plants, to save seeds for winter, we hadn't that need to hunt that much, we still did but we also could plan our future survival thanks to plants. Our diet changed and also our teeth. But we're still omnivores.

  • go veagan? what about fruit, vegtables, and fungi? they're alive, don't they have rights too? is it only beings with brains that are judged to be of value? sound pretty discriminatory to me. the only moral thing to do is to live off of viatimins and calories synthesised in a lab.;)

  • cosmicdork, Electrical appliances are alive too ??? If you want to justify your meat eating habits, it would be more acceptable if you said "I eat meat because I'm ignorant and uncompassionate person". At least that would be honest.

  • cosmicfeedbackloop, with this brilliant phrase-mongering and verbiage you could've been perfect advocate for people like Jeffrey Dahmer.

  • cosmicfeedbackloop wrote:"the only moral thing to do is to live off of viatimins and calories synthesised in a lab.;) "

    --------------------

Contemporary science already synthesizing not only vitamins, but very complex proteins too.

  • Zablorg, i dont even have a drivers card.

and have never driven, i use public transportation and bike. i always make sure i live in the right spot to do so.

  • Just cause we have technology and dominate the Earth does not mean we are better than anything. And I also think about 50% of the comments on this page tell me some humans truly are dumber than apes. And we should have stricter animal rights because are technology destroyed the natural balance of this planet. We are also smart enough to understand the pain we make (at least some humans) which is reason enough to respect the animals.

  • And for all of that I bet you still drive a car.

  • obviously you have been dominated by illiteracy... it's not are technology it's our technology

  • The lack of protein must be affecting his/ her/ its brain.

  • @tonyrosam

I respect animals, but humans truly dumber than the common ape? Really? Even the most disabled of humans can do some pretty advanced things beyond the reach of non-human species. :P

  • @tonyrosam

Well it does mean that we are better, we have a better chance of surviving which means we are meant to survive, thaths the natural balance and thaths how nature works.

But we should show respect for all living creature especially gorillas and chimps which are almsot human beings.

  • @unfad1ng human are evil and selfish(the majority) - how is that "better"?

  • @STEPHIEGRL316

well if it means we survive it is better.

But i agree most of us are so selfish thath im ashamed to be human.

  • Go vegan? No thanks, i like to recieve nutrion in my diet. As for animal rights? We should absolutly have them but above all we must still be realistic. It works for some to be vegan and that is commendable but it can be very unhealthy for others. Saying everyone should go vegan is ridiculous.

  • It just goes to show that 'Animal Rights' AND 'Human Rights' should be on our agenda. Go VEGAN and join in with the love of all!

  • hahahahahahah....(takes another bite of hamburger)mmmmmmm....cow meat sure is good.....

  • It just goes to show there should be 'Animal Rights' AND 'Human Rights'. Go vegan and join in with the love!

  • what they need is not "human rights", but rather human protection rights, when it comes to agression, we are inferior to the apes. Look at how smart we are, and then think about the human genecide that is taking place as you read this. Apes are more evolved in some respects, perhaps emotionaly.

  • I sure don't want a six year old buying acohol or driving. Or severely autistic person. They think, they are on a emotional and conscience leval shared with humans. They shoud have basic rights, keeping them in zoo's is sick, just as sick as "negro's" as slaves. We cannot even recognize our own species as humans, I think it may be very well possable that we have entirely mistaken the apes.

  • yo people i gave 25 bux, and i hope everyone else does gives as well.

  • Geez, I think koko is smarter than me.

  • lol at 12:00 the guy is acting like borat would in an interview

  • Drinking alcohol isn´t a human right, and nor is driving. I am talking about basic human right. Of course we would have to change the name, maybe human ape rights.

  • I think we should think again about our relation to nature and animals after this.

Why does the Great Ape project only include great apes and not other intelligent animals?

We should give them the human rights!

  • Rights, yes. Human rights, well no because they aren't humans.

  • What is the difference, except thes 2,1% genetic thing? Koko can talk, she has emotions, wishes, fantasy, has an idea about death ("Hole, comfortable, good bye"),so what is the difference? Native Tribes also have human rights, even if they aren´t "industialized" in any way.

Tell me what defines a human and doesn´t include Koko and other apes.

  • Although I agree that Koko is for lack of a better term a 'honorary human', she is not a human. Should Koko be allowed to get a license and drive a car? Should Koko be allowed to by alcohol at a certain age? No, because she is not a human. Human rights for humans.

  • Trebor you are stupid. Koko isn't a human. its a gorilla.

  • Tell me a reasonable cause, why we shouldn´t respect Gorillas, just as we accept for example our neighbours or anyone as a person. Koko is a person. As every other gorilla.

    Just tell me a reason.

And BTW, I wouldn´t give gorillas human rights, since I just don´t want it.But it would be the consequent decision! "Either we have to redefine "human" or "tool", or we have to accept apes as humans."

  • I NEVER said we shouldn't respect Gorillas! I love Gorillas and respect them deeply! But they are not human beings therefore are NOT people, therefore are not a person! Humans and Ape are TWO different species, we evolved alongside them not with them, we are similar but not the same! You just said you want to give Gorillas human rights two comments below, so stay consistent or there is no point debating. Apes aren't humans, therefore shouldn't get HUMAN rights! Dolphins are just as smart as apes

  • but I don't think you'd go give Dolphins human rights. Geez.

  • is that dr. Phill?

  • haha, I was thinking the same thing when I saw that guy.

  • Koko has more intelligence than some youtube users that for sure!

  • Penny is a rich pooper

  • it's francine

    not penny

  • more koko less humans.

  • losley i mean i think.. the word i mean.. i cant spell at all.

  • the movie "project X" was losey based on koko.

  • AMAZING!!!!!

  • I wonder whty they haven't tried Artifical insemination...surely that would be an option. Its used almost exclusively in other areas.

  • I'd probably lead to some pretty interesting conversations haha.

  • easy lenny..

  • haha what was the purpose of having a fake, stuffed animal version of koko sitting nextto her? haha

  • amazing, the Gorilla are gonna be teaching each other sign language. Communication is such a powerful tool

  • I was wondering that too, but I would think that the user who put this up has a special deal with youtube or something

  • Premium members get that time, or more.
