It should be possible to sue... but only for an amount equal to or less than 75% of college-related debts. Getting 7 million is just crippling the school and ignoring the fact that the student was an idiot and criminal.
Since loan lending is a scam in the first place; there's no reason to treat it honorably; so go ahead and sue. "Never pay for something with money you don't have." - Thomas Jefferson
@Caroline1204 Either way is so much better then what we have in the US. That's such an amazing way to guarantee that every citizen can get an education. America is doing a lot of things wrong. lol
@mylifeafterbreakfast "amazing way to guarantee that every citizen can get an education".
Ya at the expense of someone else's hard earned money. And havn't we danced this tune before? All you do when you give everyone an education is just ended up educating dumb people at the expense of tax payers money. So now not only are they dumb, but now with a college degree ego.
Were not all equal. Some people are naturally dumb and its always going to be that way. Sry, it a failed experiment.
BTW that girl who got herself into all that debt deserves it. Noone made her do it. This is what I mean by when I say sending dumb people to college...
and this is coming form a guy who never went to college. Its called the internet you dumbasses, theres more information on there then what any bed wetting, long haired, hippie professor can teach you. I have got to be the only 24 year old in America with no debt and 10k in the bank
USA + Legal system = madness... Here in Holland you're so lucky if the government pays you even a euro in reparations. And then you still have to pay for your lawyer, the judges and the courtroom... Thats why people don't often try to sue somebody. You loose a lot of money, and the people you sued get away with a fine (which ofcourse end up in the prime ministers pocket ;-] )
Yep those for profit places dont really care if the students default on their loans. Fast pass through the Financial Aid office. Bad credit score to the student in the end, more change in the school's own pockets. Sad vicious cycle!
I find the students rather naive and definitely too sheltered as children, not to mention the parents. They had to have filled out the FASFA forms as well. I can't believe they'd go to that extend to get loans. I wish I didn't have the loans I have now. I would never think about lying on the forms to get more. And suing...that's just ridiculous. I'm tired of everyone suing everyone because they didn't realize what they were doing.
@AndiAspden It wasn't them actually, it was the recruiters who told them to lie. If you are not given the proper education to know that this kind of thing is wrong, then you are guaranteed to fall for the scam. That's what scam artists and con men count on and what guarantees their continued success. In my opinion, we can't blame the people who were scammed, but the scammers who took advantage of their naivety.
as someone with $200K in student loans, I think by the time you're 18, you should know about budgeting for college and your future. I chose to be a doctor and so now I have tons of debt, but a plan and a profession that will allow me to pay off that enormous debt. You have to have a plan for your future before you go to college.
@danceandrevolution That's very true, but most 18 year olds don't know much about budgeting, in fact most people still don't know how to budget when they're 40. I'm not saying it's right but we can't expect the general public to understand something so grown up when they still consider themselves to be kids.
Great for them, though I would question any college that would tell me to lie on an application. There is a way to get the government to pay the loans for you though...
There is a tax form you need to file, it's 1099 oid.
Very simple form where you have to list who you paid and for what. You will get the money back as a tax return, but it usually takes much longer then regular tax returns, especially the first time. First time can take 7-9 month, after the first year it gets much faster.
@mylifeafterbreakfast I leaned it from someone who has been filing it himself for a few years and was helping others to sort out problems with IRS. There is a law that is basically hidden in all the legal terminology and is very hard to understand, especially for us, normal people who have no idea about things like that. Besides, most people wouldn't even dream that government would pay their bills. I got the money back from last year already and waiting for this years return
College is too expensive, if they want to sue, more power to them. Here is something else to think about, each tank shell that the military uses costs at $30k, so it's like they are shooting people with college educations, and that's nothing in comparison to some of the ammo they shoot with.

Here in Argentina the education system is a bit different. To hard to explain.

@Caroline1204 How is it different? Can you give me a brief description of the differences. Thanks!

@mylifeafterbreakfast One one side, there are a bunch of Colleges that, evry month, you have to pay a certain amount of money to get educated.
On the other side, there is this collage in particular that you don't have to pay to get an education. THe goverment pays evrything.
