i wonder what the reaction would be if you enclosed your setup and vacuumed the air out. the speaker and plate would obviously still vibrate, so the patterns should still appear, but i wonder if they would be any different with the salt not having to compete with another liquid medium (air). would be miniscule difference i assume, but still interesting to me.

Another cool thing with vibration is that large thick pieces of steel and other heavy metals will bend and twist under strobe lighting, if you place a PCB board loaded with components on a vibration table then strobe light on the PCB wait and watch the legs of the compomnents break off even though the are very securely soldered in. Base on this video my theory is that as sound gets from a heavy tone to a light tone . It multiply itself somewhat like cell division as the waves gets sharper and piercing . Thats base on the movement of salt from what i see . Correct me if im wrong .

judjing by the shapes made by the salt, the soundwave is undergoing simple destructive and constructive interference. my guess is that there are two speakers, one above and one directly below the board that cause this.
