Phil, I have been a Grateful Dead fan since 1982 and you guys are the reason I play guitar and I am semi-retired from my "dayjob"(I actually liked that song). Currently, I am attempting to make a full-time living at it. I had my own tribute band in NY called 'Wheel'. I believe it's about jamming and space and letting the 'music play the band'. My band page on Facebook and Reverbnation is 'The John Lowe Band'. 'All The Best'. -John Lowe.
I am a legally blind drummer and have loved your music for years. Been playin' drums going on 35 years now. If there was ever an opportunity just once, 1 show... Drop me a line brother... marcdrumz@yahoo.com
CHECK: MIKE DILLON -- Vibraphone player.... loves to step outside the box.. plays often and for years with Les Claypool .. also plays with bands such as Garage a Tois with Skerik, Marco Benevento and Stanton Moore from Galactic.. plays in numerous projects.. all unique... would be great to see him with Phil and Friends .,, and the choice in itself is out of the box!
The Grateful Dead are genius! The biggest most influencial band from the U.S.
If you don't like it, listen to something else and leave their fans alone. I don't go around bashing music or artists I don't like. Maybe I'm just a differen't type of person. One Love people. We're all in one big family!
Oneness-Have you ever sat down and actually listened to Lesh? Sounds to me like you hear a few bars and then turn it off. He's brilliant! He's never set out to be a "typical" bass player focusing on the root notes.
You don't survive in the music business for over 40 years without having some credibility. Oh, there's a word for ya; credibility - go get some.
Influenced by Lesh - Gordon, Lessard, Burbridge, Cassady, Schools
DEAD HEADS=doctors and lawyers. Not much up upstairs there.
Phil developed his style of playing from classical counterpoint, so if you're waiting for him to do flashy Stanley Clarke-ish stuff you came to the wrong place Even in Phil Lesh & Friends it's about the music, not about himself. He didn't ride off Jerry, neither did the other members, and I don't believe Jerry would have wanted to play with anybody else. The creativity and subtle nuance of his playing came at a time when most bass players were playing root notes, and it still holds up today.
@oneness100 so u gotta be on drugs to enjoy the DEAD? ever hear of the wharfrats?clean and sober heads you need to get your head outta ur ass phill has been playing bass what 40 years if he was no good i doubt the DEAD would have kept him
i just want to let it be known to all of you that people were using "drugs" as oneness likes to call them, LONG, LONG before anyone was they were bad. violence has existed before peace. you don't realize it by now then you're a moron. peace is an unattainable ideal. there must be a balance in everything, for every peaceful act there must be a violent act committed. it's the way of life!
This is supposed to be a music related discussion.
To my way of thinking aything else interjected here is really the equivalent of spam. So, if this stuff is actually not related to discussion of the music (the topic) why does youtube not delete the crap as the spam that it is. I detest it when someone with an agenda tries to highjack something like this.
Phil, the Dead, Mozart, if you choose. are about music. Let's keep the comments appropriate to the category.
Thankfully, enough people spoke up, disagreed with him and put him in his place. Don't worry, Dead Heads, oneness100 was schooled with several good rebuttals.
Read on if you wish, but that's about 1 year's worth of crap... all summed up in two posts.
I hope I never meet this oneness100. Did I say that already?
If you are reading this, don't read too much past this post. I'll sum it all up for ya:
Oneness100 dislikes the Grateful Dead and feels that they are a negative contribution to society. He thinks that people who drink ANY amount of beer are addicts. He is against ALL drugs, doesn't use artificial sweeteners, and does not ever eat at McDonald's. Most of all, he enjoys endless, year-long debates over why he thinks the Dead suck and why we're basically just a country full of addicts in denial.
btw we will never have peacful planet unless everyone realizes they aint perfect, in fact having a complety peacful planet sounds like a familar idea, o yea didnt the hippies say something about that, when they were on acid, dnt bother replying i wont b back to check this, waste of fucking time
haha well even though you won't see this cool guy...i think our current situation is like a bunch of people crowded into pioneer square attempting to hear dave chappelle with a tiny amplifier but nobody can hear so they just keep yelling at everyone else to quiet down and saying "shhhh" which actually makes more noise rather than just not saying anything at all to make things quieter.
i agree completely , this is a way cool statement, im not sure what situation your talking about though???are you discussing our country as a whole or this forum? none the less it makes sense , but i dont get why you think your different then me?? are we not brothers??? if thinking my opinions are dumb arent you just another person "SHH"ing everybody
no i don't think i was shhhing because in order to disagree with you i must first listen to what you have to say but i guess i misunderstood what you were saying. and you are completely right that we are brothers altough we will never meet and i wish more people thought like that. but i do think that if anything we should legalize marijuana and ban alcohol cuz it actually kills people and can be dangerous. even though we now have a culture built around it that can't be changed...ps let phil sing
morning, its obvious you are closely related to people that have drug problems, and have possible had one, still im speechless that you suggested banning alcohol, wanna throw away all the paint to, thats addicting, what about vikaden, when you got your wisdom teeth pulled did you go without drugs and nitrous? fucking liberal ideoligy bullshit, wanna make a difference, become a drug therapist and work on the real problem, the drug user!
i don't get why this is such a waste of time for you, yet you keep saying things. and yes it is completely ridiculous to allow alcohol and ban everything else but you are used to alcohol being legal because it has been all your life so it seems normal but if it had always been illegal you would look at it just like any other drug. i really don't think you know what you are talking about
i really dnt think you know what your talking about either, if you think it is a ridiculous idea then it wouldnt matter if you grew up with it , i think marijuana should be legal and the idea that weed is bad has been drilled into me since 6th grade with the d.a.r.e. program, it just took me longer to realize that i dont have to believe in everything thats told to me.
and i dont group drugs into one big category wich you seem to have assumed, i think some drugs are terrible for you while others are beneficial , so if it was illegal its not safe to say that i would consider it "just like any other drug" because there not all the same, i dont base my judgement of a drug on its legal position , i base it on the hard facts of what the drug does, and also by experience...
omg im reading this guys comments and its just endless, im done, waste of time, i dont care if you fucking think drugs are bad, no shit!, that doesnt mean our country should ban it, this is a free country, and its fucking liberal ideas like that that are going to ruin the true greatness of this country, my father is a hard working man that comes home and has a beer, he doesnt come home to get drunk, are you saying this shouldnt be aloud because some fucking junkie cracks a 40 open at 8 in the
When someone smokes pot around someone else that doesn't or want to smoke pot, isn't that violating THEIR right not to get high? From my past experiences drug and alcohol users will say anything to keep their addiction, that's the mindframe of an addicted person. It's commonly called being in a state of denial. I've seen first hand what drug and alcohol usage does to people over long periods of time and it isn't pretty. things like cancer, liver/kidney disease, mental health problems, etc.
Yes, everybody knows there are drug casualties out there. Thank you for harping on it.
For every desolate crack head/hopeless alcoholic there are at LEAST 2 or 3 people who can function in life using whatever they wish (in moderation) on a recreational basis.
Do you live in a methadone clinic or something? Why such a pessamistic outlook? The "crackhead/junky/alcoholic" stands out, while the responsible users do not!!!
They go unnoticed because they are able to function like anyone else.
How naive. You think someone smoking pot in the vicinity of a non-user will get them high?? Or "violate their right to not get high", rather?? LOL
I don't smoke cigarettes. Anybody can light one around me without violating my rights (albeit with newer laws it must be outside or in designated indoor areas that allow smoke)!!
I might not like it but they have a right to do what they choose. Just like at a bar people make the choice to have one drink, a few, or many.
Well, just living in this society feels like a methadone clinic...
I am wondering what country has legalized pot and is flurishing because of it. Amsterdam isn't a flourishing country because of legalized pot. From what people have told me, it's actually getting worse because of it. To me, if you want pot legal, go somewhere where it is and live there.
I've been to concerts lately where lots of people were drunk/stoned and it wasn't as enjoyable as it was their behavior that was unpleasant.
A couple of true anecdotes. I attended two concerts (Dave Mathews and Sting). I had reserved seats for both concerts and the tickets were over $100 each. I had to end up either standing up during the concert or leaving because the people in front of me were standing up during the concert. Most of the crowd was either drunk or stoned or both as people were lining up to get beers. I ended up leaving. People become extrememely inconsiderate when they get high or drunk at concerts.
@Oneness100 ....Bummer for you, dude...yup some people over do it concerts, sporting events, bars, restaurants, walking down the street....in this mixed grab bag of a world, it's all about tolerance isn't it?..you ain't gotta like what the guy next to you is doing, and I myself would kindly speak up to someone pissin' on my parade.. if they get it they get it, if not, fine..they paid for their ticket too...what I would do is find another seat or area to enjoy myself, as I kick on some fresh nugz
Well, sometimes you can't find "another" seat because they are reserved seating. In addition, while YOU are "kicking on some fresh nugz" as you put it, others that are around you that don't want to have to deal with YOUR drug addiction. Why do others have to tolerate YOUR drug addiction, when you shouldn't be using the stuff for recreational purposes in public? People get high off from just smelling it.
It must be real lonely on that pedestal of yours...however, I can dig your opinion...I dislike drawing lines and feeling like you got yours , I got mine, but your comments make me grateful to be a part of the community to which I belong...we are far from perfect and our music and community isn't for everyone...and hey, if you don't like what people do at concerts or out in the world, you can always go live under a rock or just bitch on the internet...that'll teach 'em....
Are you forgetting what concert you are at? This isnt Taylor Swift or the Jonas Bras ....and it's not like everyones shooting up all around you and stickin' you with needles. Relax and enjoy the music..... side note ....Phil was an amazing trumpet player who wrote and arranged scores for a college jazz band before he met Jerry....I doubt he needed many lessons......
I am NOT into Taylor Swift or Jonas Bros. Phil wasn't an amazing trumpet player, he didn't go to a high level music conservatory, he went to Cabot College, which ISN'T Julliard. Nor did he perform on any noted jazz albums as a trumpet player. I don't think he was even a 1st chair trumpet player.
Oh, i know the point you are trying to make and it is using fallacious reasoning. I am just on the bus that is filled with people that use better judgement because their brains aren't being destroyed by drugs/alcohol and bad bass playing. Hahahahahahahahaha.
Oneness100 Miles Davis didnt go to Juliard...or any college for that matter. Most of the original Jazz musicians didn't. That should tell you something
Well, some DID go to colleges as they could afford to go. How about Joe Zawinul? He was classically trained. Miles Davis actually did attend Julliard, but dropped out. Many top jazz players came from musical families, private lessons, etc. Everyone is different. Phil wasn't the first chair Trumpet player, was he? Cabot College is like a Jr. College, isn't it?
plus the reason Phil Lesh didnt perform on any noted jazz albums was because he was with the Dead. I dont know how good he was but just because he isnt well known for his trumpet playing doesnt mean he isnt good
If Phil Lesh was a noted trumpet player, he would have been called in to play trumpet if he was any good, he did have connections in the music industry with the Dead.
Well, I don't think people are buying Grateful Dead albums/CDs because of his bass playing, Maybe it's because the people buying the albums/CDs are into pot/drugs/alcohol and partying along under the influence of drugs/alcohol. Maybe THAT'S the REAL reason... HMMMMMMMMMM... I think that is more truthful.
@randeezydizzle Wow, now I REALLY understand the level of intelligence (or lack thereof) with regards to DEADHEADS... Why do you think they are called DEAD HEADS? Not much upstairs......
Have fun smoking weed, dropping acid and trippin to the DEAD. I am really impressed.
i was talking about the comment a couple pages back were you said not one professional musician has listened any of the grateful dead members as a significant influence to there music
the culture they had created , which btw defied the society, it was a seperate entity from society created way back during the 60s acid era when people werent really trying to fix society but seperate themselve from it, which they did, i just dont understand why drugs and alcohol abuse is tied directyl to gd music or fans, im sure, just as woodstock was, that gd shows were peacfull, thoughtfull, connected, i dont understand the connection ur making with religion and making a peacfullplanet. done
use, i actual think alot of there songs reflect the negative sides of drug use and encourage people to quit, examples; althea, peggy-o, stella blue, youve made such an unthoughtful argument, and are pretending that the gd culture is all based on drug use, its a small part of it, i really think the gd culture represents freedom, and pursuing happiness the way you want to, not the way its offered to you, so fuck off
haha, people go to grateful dead shows, and alot of them are sober, there great musicians who made and make great music, drugs or no drugs, but drugs were apart of there life, therefore its written about an reflected, i dont think anyof the songs are meant to brainwash or encourage drug
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
while garcia was alive phhil and bobby together couldn't fill a bar....while garcia was packing 20K with the JGB.....these guys are tapping the residue garcia left on them for every penny it's worth....PAF plays the eleven for 4 hours straight freakin' greedy buzz killer
The Grateful Dead never really had lots of money. And im not sure how phil used jerry for money, its not like phil was a part of the band since the very begining or anything....
the guy pushing 70 hangs out with sid casualty's after shows ....he's drinking again on a second liver....(NOT TO JUDGE>>>>BUT HE made the big deal out of it...rocking so ho in chic outfits.......
Phil iw'oulddnt know how to say iv'e see the dead 164times on the road and playin that kind of music with a passion close to Jerry's vibes I love to jam all day long if u read this from dawn to dusk Or the Other One way dusk till dawn how would you get a hold of me cant wait your answer I would include a recording of ur band P.L.A.F of the whole new years show when u guys played with Crussader rabbit, ratdog but you guys really did Terrapin and Dark Star awsomly!!!!!!
Not sure what this video is getting at. I don't consider jamming on old blues tunes to be "stepping outside of your comfort zone". Quite the opposite.
Ya, but they hardly gonna put some outre jam behind this clip for the masses,
are they?
"Truckin' " is here so that,
when it's on TV, Grandpa will stir from his acid fried dreams of the 60s in the armchair in the next room, wobble into the living room and cry

talking to complete strangers on youtube is simply a waste of time, and im doing it here because i wanted to say something...and its late and im about pass out....oh yea by the way Phil Lesh is the best jam bassist alive today, and if you have the inability to realize that, you dont the mental capacity to understand good music. if you see this dont bother responding, because i could care less what you have to say : )
hey Oneness100 ive noticed all youve been doing is coming on here and getting into debates with people, from several months ago, and a few weeks ago, but im sure no one really cares what you feel, and why dont you get a life and not spend all your time on youtube, and now i realize im here right now but i dont voice my opinions about much because letting everyone know has no personal gain on my part, and it really makes no difference, so what im getting at here is...
Go look it up on the internet. Many Leading psychologists have listed that it is a psychoactive, addictive drug that in many ways is worse than heroin because society has deemed it socially acceptable, but more people die from alcohol than ALL illegal drugs combined.
One thing about ANY addiction, some people, when they stop, in order to fulfill their commitment to stopping, they have to associating with people that do drink because they just don't want to be around it for whatever reason. They don't like the smell of it, they don't like hanging people under the influence of it, or they would rather spend their time elsewhere enjoying life. People that stop using heroin usually don't associate with heroin users unless they are helping others stop using.
I think you should attempt to quit your addiction of posting rubbish on this video. If being away from this video helps your commitment to stopping, by all means stay away. I suggest you have a couple dozen beers and go for a long drive.
I don't drink, so I don't know how drinking a couple of dozen beers and going for a long drive is going to help me. Just the smell of beer makes me nauseous.. If you don't like what I post, then don't read it.
Its too late for society and as for the music scene...akin to a gigantic pair of soiled underwear - the skidmark being todays 'artists'. I dont know about you part of the world but in mine young people think England is in America, are totally illiterate except when it comes to sending text messages or updating their 'facebook' and are absolutely ignorant about everything - except what they see on TV. Then again I do live in arguably the worst 'city' in Australia..
I don't know how much you drink, but you did admit that you did. and don't call me a name because you can't admit that you may need to stop. It doesn't take much to get addicted to it. One sip is all it takes. Some people get addicted to it, some don't. Some know how to stop, some don't.
Listen, If I didn't care what people did, then I would say anything, but I do care. Why? Because I have and had friends and family members lives destroyed by it. I've seen what it does to people first hand, and I don't like it. It causes cancer, driving deaths, liver disease, kidney disease, digestive disorders, etc. People get thrown in jail from consuming it, etc. and I think society should learn to remove it. Some countries don't allow it, I wish this country was 1 of them.
Well, there are positive and negative aspects of ANY psychological behavior. I am trying to help others understand and decide to remove an addition that isn't healthy for them and for society. You are being obsessive about holding onto that addiction for yourself and society. Which one is positive? Which one is negative? Two way street. You have an obsession about keeping the addiction, I have the obsession about getting people off of it.
This is not a Phil Lesh site, this is YouTube posting of a video of Phil Lesh, with the ability to make comments. It is a posting by ArtisanNewsService, whomever they are. If ArtisanNewsService wants people to be able to post, then people can make postings. You, me, anyone. Now you have to resort to calling people names? Denial is part of ANY addiction, have you seen the movie Midnight Run?
Well, if you talk to various experts in the field a alcoholism, there are various stages of the disease. There are physical and psychological aspects. The decision to continue to drink is part of the addiction. I am not talking from a 12 step program, those aren't the only people that discuss it. It's the decision to stop and the ability to fulfill that decision, just like ANY substance. If you don't decide to stop, then you have an addition. How bad depends on how much and the frequency.
Being obsessed with sobriety is certainly much healthier than being obsessed with drugs/alcohol, don't you think?
You mentioned that you drink beers, until you stop, it is an addiction. Personally, I think clubs will go out of business when there isn't anyone still going. Many clubs aren't doing to well. What happens is what happens.
Well, BB King isn't promoted as a Jazz artist and he admits to practicing to it at home. But if you go on Wikipedia, it clearly states that the have jazz influences.
Either way the Dead is not a band where musicians seek to improve their music skills......
Come on, if Phil Lesh is so good and people want to play with, he should have a list of people waiting to play with him. He got Jackie Greene? That guy is a small step above bar band level. Jam band mentality.
BB King doesn't tout himself as being a jazz musician. He is a Blues Musician and he has shared the same stage playing with fusion artists so saying he falls apart playing with "those heavy players" is not exactly a truthful statement.
One beer and you don't think you are abusing alcohol? Well, I know someone about the same age as you that had one beer, got pulled over when he left the bar, got tested at .06 BAC and actually got a DUI and he couldn't get it down to a wet reckless. True Story.. Kind of scary that in some parts of the country that the police can still site you for a DUI after one beer and .06 BAC level. People don't realize that it is up to the officer's discretion in some areas and they are cracking down.
One beer is still having some form of addiction to it. Did you know that depending on your body's ability to process alcohol that actually one beer can actually have an effect on one's ability to full awareness while driving a car?
Well, I have other ideas to promote music and keep musicians paid.
How about a non-profit organization that gets companies that make healthy products to fund on free concerts for the public and pay musicians money to play, but have it at alcohol free venues?
Dude, you're being a dumbass. I don't drink (AT ALL), but how can you honestly say it's not ok to drink one beer. There is no addiction is someone wants to drink one beer occasionally. I never drink and won't, but I think your statement is absurd.
Well, read about alcohlism with someone that is trained in addictions, you wil find that there are two aspects of addictions. One is psychological and the other is physical. Go look up ethanol and see if it is a healthy substance. Is it healthy? NOPE. Alcoholic beverages are actually considered to be a psychoactive drug. Go educate yourself about alcohlism, the affects of alcohol on the brain/liver/kidney/digestive tract/immune system. Obviously, you haven't read enough about the subject.
Do you drink diet soda? Do you have anything with artificial sweeteners in it? Do you eat MacDonalds? Do you go to the beach or in the sun period? Diet soda has aspartame in it, as well as most artificial sweeteners. This chemical has been proven to have a connection to cancer. The most common type of cancer is skin cancer. Why do people get that? From going outside. I suppose nobody should go outside. Someone can form a mental addiction to anything, including food. It's deadly.
I have not had a beer in around six months, I have a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology/Percussion from MTSU. I have tried marijuana and do not like it, it makes me too nervous. The Grateful Dead are a fascinating and complex group who have done more for music than you or I probably ever will. This whole discussion is useless. The Grateful Dead rule and I hope no one ever subjects themselves to reading this immature histrionic drivel.
That's great that you haven't had a beer in 6 months and that you say you don't use drugs. My opinion on how much I enjoy or don't enjoy the Dead's music is varied just I have stated before. I think some of their melodies were pretty interesting, but that's about it. I have never seen a top professional musician (drummer, vocalist, guitar player,, bass player, etc.) list any of the GD band members as being major influences on them.
and is that how you judge music, by what other professionals think, the gd were all professionals in my opinion, they were all musicians in there own bands, jerry was a country player who played banjo and other stinged instruments and toured across the country, the dead was put together to move away from the country and blues rooted music, wich i think they did successfully ,and they were not looking for fame nor to influence anyone greatly by there playing, they were focused on there music and
Should we not eat? In case we will form an addiction to food? Or I get it, we shouldn't listen to any music that was created by people who enjoy eating because they feel there is a lot to learn about food and how it alters one's mind. Hey, do you take any meds? Aspirin? Allergy meds? anything? Read the possible side effects. Now don't make assumptions about me. You don't know me. I have studied drugs many a time. Including alcohol. You're just a complete moron
Psychedelic drugs have a lot of scientific value. The idea of a plant, or fungus, altering the way that the mind perceives everything is incredible. These drugs also allow people a realization which brings them closer to their fellow people and the earth. It is incredibly difficult for me to see how you can find that problematic or negative for society. If they get in a car and drive, then it's bad, but in general, the drugs are not a problem for society. They're beneficial.
I didn't say it's not OK to drink one beer. I used to drink occaissionally years ago, but after doing some personal research, talking with people, I found out it isn't healthy so I decided to stop and haven't had a craving for it since. But unfortunately, our society promotes the use of it and by and large tells people it is ok, but it really isn't. One of the many lies perpetrated by our society.
I do not use drugs. The Grateful Dead is an extremely important force in my life. You are conceited. Please, you have already ruined John Mclaughlin, stop seeking attention.
Yeah, I have one of their CDs because i was hoping they could take some of the songs and do a jazz interpretation that was worth listening to, but I guess whether it was a jazz version or the real thing, it was a waste of my time.
I would rather listen to Alphonso Johnson's solo records, he's got positive music to listen to. He uses music to create creative imagery without always using lyrics.
BTW, those were jazz interpretations and your assessment is YOUR opinion, but at least there was better musicianship involved and they weren't tripping on acid while playing the songs.
Dead songs are simple songs to play. I've seen bar bands play them at almost the same level of musicianship. It doesn't take much to play simple chords, rhythms and sing them off key or flat, just like the Dead would do on a regular basis.
That is simply false dude. The members had a connection unlike any other band. Everything was planned when bands like the Allman Brothers performd, but the Dead had a connection that allowed to do incredible improvisations. They are far from simple guitar parts. Yeah, there are simple songs, like Franklin's Tower or Touch of Grey...But there are also very complicated songs. It is not the difficulty of a song that is important, it's the craftsmanship. The songs are complex chord progressions.
My name is not Dude. Secondly, go out and get the Mahavishnu Orchestra songbook and try to play their music.
Many of the GD songs were simple for drummers. That's the perspective I am coming from. They did a lot of experimentation, but it was drug induced. That was their thing... I am not going to waste any more time trying to analyze their songs, I find them to be fairly uninspiring to listen to and it is their drug culture that is the real turnoff and negative for society.
How can you say this "drug culture" you speak of is negative for society. A group of people who had/have actual morals an values that are what is true to being a human being. They care for the earth, they want nothing but peace...These are positive things for society. Right now, mainstream society lacks all of this. people do not have legitimate opinions anymore. They care about nothing, but getting wasted. This is a group of people that represents the polar opposite, how can you call them negat
Do you actually know what it takes to have a peaceful world? Removing drugs/alcohol from being consumed is part of it. Do you know how many innocent people die every day from drugs/alcohol abuse? How about the kids that grow up in an environment of drugs/alcohol that get subjected to their parents drugs/alcohol abuse? Have you seen anyone become mentally ill from LSD?
No, in order to have a peaceful world, the first thing that must happen is a removal of religious beliefs. That is the main source of violence in this world. People obsess over their version of an attempted answer for life. You should realize that alcohol abuse and LSD are not the source of violence and hatred in the world. One source of violence is when people force their radical beliefs on others, AKA what you do. Don't discredit incredible musicians based on your own ignorance.
Removal of Religious beliefs is also part of it. Also, Political egomaniacs is another. Drugs/alcohol are fueling many of the people that get involved with violent acts.
Yes, I feel like people are trying to FORCE their beliefs that the Dead is something I have to get involved in. I've listened to them, but I don't find much fulfillment listening/studying their music. Sorry. They just don't insprire me that much.I can't listen to a particular song more than a few times. I've at least tried.
drugs and alcohol changes people's behavior. It actually magnifies their inherent characteristics. If one presents themselves is ignorant to begin with, drugs/alcohol magnifies that.
Drugs/alcohol is part of the dumbing down of society. until you come to terms with that aspect of your own denial, then maybe you'll change your viewpoints. drugs/alcohol have been used as means of brainwashing and I feel that the GD culture has been brainwashed.
First off, what does that matter? Secondly, I haven't found any Religion to be worth practicing as I don't find them to be helpful from a practical standpoint nor do I find them to be full of honesty. Most of the Religious philosophies tend to be dogmatic and not practical. Some worse than others. I am more into Spiritual based psychology (NOT Scientology, that's a Religion.) Not into EST either.
hahahahaha ok substances and the grateful dead are 2 different things and what is the point of taking a year off of listening to a band you love anyways??? and you can hardly call the dead pop. none of their stuff made it into the pop world ...the only reason they survived was dedicated fans. and your suggestions are nice but i would rather hear a jerry solo than an al di meola ego run down the fretboard any day. i would very much never like to meet you.
I think you are missing the poknt. It seems like some of the hardcore Dead fans don't expand their listening to other forms of music/bands/musicians is very narrow minded. I've probably have listened to more Dead songs than you have listened to other master musicians that are recognized as such by leading jazz critics. The more sophisticated the music, the harder it is for some to understand it. That's OK, I wouldn't like to meet your either SirSampsonSimpson.
it is actually because of the grateful dead that i first got into jazz so i think they have expanded my musical influences more than anybody just by focusing on improvising so much and giving their fans such a deep appreciation for it. if it weren't for the dead i don't think i would have ever majored in performance in jazz guitar because i wouldn't have been into it as much. so yeah from my experience it is the complete opposite of everything you have said about the dead.
No, Charlie Parker's music didn't have lyrics about using drugs, nor did he have people at concerts trying to legalize drugs, nor did Charlie Parker distribute drugs.
Quit making excuses based on fallacious reasoning.
IF I did have a beer, I certainly don't go anymore and don't drink anymore. Haven't for many years. Yeah, society promotes that stuff and I am hear to NOT promote it by awareness. Why are you putting people down for NOT promoting or using it? Isn't that counterproductive?
You're an idiot. Nobody had more heart than Jerry and Co. it was all about the music for these guys.
They were constantly on the road and would play for 4-5 hour sets at a time. This is why true music lovers, whether they smoke pot or do other drugs or not, gravitate(d) to their shows.
The jamming and added dynamics beyond "normal" pop/rock music is almost a drug in and of itself.... just cause you can't hear the music don't be hating on it!!
I guess if your on drugs/alcohol you might think their extended jams is music. I found most of their jams to be quite mindless noise. I used to practice to Europe 72 album when I was 12, I stopped after about 3 months because it was boring. It is actually pretty simple stuff to play from a drummers standpoint. Most of their stuff is simple blues-folk based with a slight tinge of jazz, but their jams are more drug induced BS. But that's MY opinion. WHY? Because it is my right to have one.
First of all, ever been to a dead show? Tell me how Rhythm devils is a simply blues-folk based drum beat? The rhythm section of the dead is incredible. Now their jams are an example of incredible musical talent. Everything is perfectly crafted. If you cannot understand that, then you are not a true musician. To not like them is fine, you're entitled to your opinion, but to belittle their revolutionary style and take away their credit is simply ludicrous and any true musician would agree
Rhythm Devils, from the recordings I have heard seems more freeform drumming. Now, in terms of chops, Mickey Hart did develop some decent chops. BK on the other hand, seemed really sloppy to me. Either that or he was too high. When drummers/musicians do drugs, it affects their playing. To me, Rhythm Devils becomes quite boring. That's just me. I just didn't "get off" on it. Sorry.
I'll take a Trilok Gurtu, Zakir Hussain, Tony Williams, Billy Cobham solo any day of the week.
markrosenberg21, I heard one of your songs on your website. First off, you can't sing very well. Secondly, you being more of a self proclaimed song writer than a actual drummer with years or decades of experience, I would tend to not listen to your "opinion" on drumming. OK? Go pick up John McLaughlin Trio Live at Royal Hall with Trilok Gurtu and listen to him One of the finest percussionists. I think he has won 6 DownBeat awards for best percussionist. How many has BK and MH won? NONE.
Dude, I play guitar...You discredited an entire band based on their drummers. As I said, you are entitled to your opinions, but many of your statements are simply incorrect. I know many people that like the grateful dead and do not do any drugs. That is a ridiculous statement and simply immature.
Well, you talk like you have a vast knowledge of drumming and you only play guitar. There are MANY aspects of the band I can discuss, some are positive and some are negative. But yes, I don't think they have that great of drumming. Allman Brothers' drummers were by far, better players as far as a duo drumming situation. They have IMO, better jazz/blues chops, dynamics, better feel and I prefer thier playing. They inspire me rather than boring me.
If you are using drugs or alcohol, you could think of their indulgent jamming as music. I used to practice drums to their Live Europe '72 album when I was 12. Now I am 13. From the standpoint of a drummer, it seems to be fairly easy stuff. Mostly simple blues-folk with some jazz, but I feel that their jamming becomes tedious and seems drug induced. But that's my opinion. Why? Because I have one.
Good for you on the whole opinion thing, next time try not to be so negative.
I am just stating MY opinion and I am just being honest. I can't help it if these guys really aren't as good of musicians as their drug/alcohol induced fans THINK they are. I can't help it if their music is pretty easy/boring for a drummer like myself to play. I can't help it if the GD drug/alcohol induced jamming sounds like BS to me. It's my opinion, I am not the only person out in the world that thinks the same way, I knew of many others that think the same way.
Were you aware that people that use drugs and alcohol are actually lowering the collective consciouness of the human race? Basically, drugs/alcohol create a more UNENLIGHTENED society. Unfortunately, the Dead missed the boat on that whole discussion. The more drugs/alcohol one consumes, the closer to unconsciouss they become and it pisses people off that don't drink or do drugs as that is the part of society that is trying to raise conscioussness levels.
Hate on the Dead all you want. It's your right to have an opinion but it is not your right to make such blanket statements inferring that anyone who could possibly like this "music" must be stoned or drunk all the time.
You are merely judging based on a stereotype. Based on your answers... I could make a wildly opinionated, stereotyped accusation that you are a self-righteous, higher-than-thou prick who hasn't experienced nearly as much as life has to offer because of your CLOSED MINDEDNESS
I never said Deadheads "were drunk or stoned all of the time." From my own research, reading, and discussions with people that are drug/counselors, it is always a good idea to remove oneself from a parttcular lifestyle/triggers that promote alcohol and drug usage until one gets a handle on negative addictions. Plus it is a good way to find out if you are brainwashed or not.
And they paid the ultimate price for abusin didn't they? It is a reminder not to do it, yet followers of the Dead still go to concerts using and abusing.
I just think it is bad karma to be part of that band and to promote them.
Plus, this is a free society where people have freedom of speech, is it not? Why are you trying to have people that speak differently not be able to post?
Me bringing YOU down? Maybe you are feeling just a little guilty of promoting a drug based band.
If Phil Lesh is so good, why does he have to go publicly that he is looking for musicians to play with? Why doesn't he just call all of these jazz players to play with him?
I'm up for it, what a project. Excellent

-John Lowe.

Phil developed his style of playing from classical counterpoint, so if you're waiting for him to do flashy Stanley Clarke-ish stuff you came to the wrong place Even in Phil Lesh & Friends it's about the music, not about himself. He didn't ride off Jerry, neither did the other members, and I don't believe Jerry would have wanted to play with anybody else. The creativity and subtle nuance of his playing came at a time when most bass players were playing root notes, and it still holds up today.

Did I say that already?
akmalek 2 years ago
If you are reading this, don't read too much past this post. I'll sum it all up for ya:
Oneness100 dislikes the Grateful Dead and feels that they are a negative contribution to society. He thinks that people who drink ANY amount of beer are addicts. He is against ALL drugs, doesn't use artificial sweeteners, and does not ever eat at McDonald's. Most of all, he enjoys endless, year-long debates over why he thinks the Dead suck and why we're basically just a country full of addicts in denial.

haha well even though you won't see this cool guy...i think our current situation is like a bunch of people crowded into pioneer square attempting to hear dave chappelle with a tiny amplifier but nobody can hear so they just keep yelling at everyone else to quiet down and saying "shhhh" which actually makes more noise rather than just not saying anything at all to make things quieter.
SirSampsonSimpson 2 years ago
i agree completely , this is a way cool statement, im not sure what situation your talking about though???are you discussing our country as a whole or this forum? none the less it makes sense , but i dont get why you think your different then me?? are we not brothers??? if thinking my opinions are dumb arent you just another person "SHH"ing everybody
airnsmke 2 years ago
no i don't think i was shhhing because in order to disagree with you i must first listen to what you have to say but i guess i misunderstood what you were saying. and you are completely right that we are brothers altough we will never meet and i wish more people thought like that. but i do think that if anything we should legalize marijuana and ban alcohol cuz it actually kills people and can be dangerous. even though we now have a culture built around it that can't be changed...ps let phil sing
SirSampsonSimpson 2 years ago
morning, its obvious you are closely related to people that have drug problems, and have possible had one, still im speechless that you suggested banning alcohol, wanna throw away all the paint to, thats addicting, what about vikaden, when you got your wisdom teeth pulled did you go without drugs and nitrous? fucking liberal ideoligy bullshit, wanna make a difference, become a drug therapist and work on the real problem, the drug user!
airnsmke 2 years ago
i don't get why this is such a waste of time for you, yet you keep saying things. and yes it is completely ridiculous to allow alcohol and ban everything else but you are used to alcohol being legal because it has been all your life so it seems normal but if it had always been illegal you would look at it just like any other drug. i really don't think you know what you are talking about
SirSampsonSimpson 2 years ago
i really dnt think you know what your talking about either, if you think it is a ridiculous idea then it wouldnt matter if you grew up with it , i think marijuana should be legal and the idea that weed is bad has been drilled into me since 6th grade with the d.a.r.e. program, it just took me longer to realize that i dont have to believe in everything thats told to me.
airnsmke 2 years ago
and i dont group drugs into one big category wich you seem to have assumed, i think some drugs are terrible for you while others are beneficial , so if it was illegal its not safe to say that i would consider it "just like any other drug" because there not all the same, i dont base my judgement of a drug on its legal position , i base it on the hard facts of what the drug does, and also by experience...
airnsmke 2 years ago
and btw i will respond to things like this wether its a waste of my time or not, its of my nature to defend my opinions...
airnsmke 2 years ago
omg im reading this guys comments and its just endless, im done, waste of time, i dont care if you fucking think drugs are bad, no shit!, that doesnt mean our country should ban it, this is a free country, and its fucking liberal ideas like that that are going to ruin the true greatness of this country, my father is a hard working man that comes home and has a beer, he doesnt come home to get drunk, are you saying this shouldnt be aloud because some fucking junkie cracks a 40 open at 8 in the

Oneness100 2 years ago
Yes, everybody knows there are drug casualties out there. Thank you for harping on it.
For every desolate crack head/hopeless alcoholic there are at LEAST 2 or 3 people who can function in life using whatever they wish (in moderation) on a recreational basis.
Do you live in a methadone clinic or something? Why such a pessamistic outlook? The "crackhead/junky/alcoholic" stands out, while the responsible users do not!!!
They go unnoticed because they are able to function like anyone else.
bobshenix 2 years ago
Ease up amigo!
bobshenix 2 years ago
Well, just living in this society feels like a methadone clinic...
I am wondering what country has legalized pot and is flurishing because of it. Amsterdam isn't a flourishing country because of legalized pot. From what people have told me, it's actually getting worse because of it. To me, if you want pot legal, go somewhere where it is and live there.
I've been to concerts lately where lots of people were drunk/stoned and it wasn't as enjoyable as it was their behavior that was unpleasant.
Oneness100 2 years ago
Portugal, all drugs are decriminalized and crime and drug dependency is way down...look it up
lilcha85 2 years ago
Well, go move to Portugal if you want to smoke pot or do drugs.
If drugs are legalized, of course the crime rate is going to go down because there is less things you can arrested for. DUH...
But look at the death rate and disease rates, are they going up or down because of legalization?
How about the standard of living, is it going down or up?
There are many different measurements as a result of legalization of drugs.
Nutjob100 2 years ago
listen, u asked a question and i answered it. The standard of living is better than ever, and drug dependency is way down.
Why don't you do the research yourself instead of debating it online when you really haven't a clue.
lilcha85 2 years ago
A couple of true anecdotes. I attended two concerts (Dave Mathews and Sting). I had reserved seats for both concerts and the tickets were over $100 each. I had to end up either standing up during the concert or leaving because the people in front of me were standing up during the concert. Most of the crowd was either drunk or stoned or both as people were lining up to get beers. I ended up leaving. People become extrememely inconsiderate when they get high or drunk at concerts.
Oneness100 2 years ago
@Oneness100 ....Bummer for you, dude...yup some people over do it concerts, sporting events, bars, restaurants, walking down the street....in this mixed grab bag of a world, it's all about tolerance isn't it?..you ain't gotta like what the guy next to you is doing, and I myself would kindly speak up to someone pissin' on my parade.. if they get it they get it, if not, fine..they paid for their ticket too...what I would do is find another seat or area to enjoy myself, as I kick on some fresh nugz
lefty6674 2 years ago
Well, sometimes you can't find "another" seat because they are reserved seating. In addition, while YOU are "kicking on some fresh nugz" as you put it, others that are around you that don't want to have to deal with YOUR drug addiction. Why do others have to tolerate YOUR drug addiction, when you shouldn't be using the stuff for recreational purposes in public? People get high off from just smelling it.
Oneness100 2 years ago
It must be real lonely on that pedestal of yours...however, I can dig your opinion...I dislike drawing lines and feeling like you got yours , I got mine, but your comments make me grateful to be a part of the community to which I belong...we are far from perfect and our music and community isn't for everyone...and hey, if you don't like what people do at concerts or out in the world, you can always go live under a rock or just bitch on the internet...that'll teach 'em....

Oneness100 Miles Davis didnt go to Juliard...or any college for that matter. Most of the original Jazz musicians didn't. That should tell you something
0xXNirvanaXx0 2 years ago
Well, some DID go to colleges as they could afford to go. How about Joe Zawinul? He was classically trained. Miles Davis actually did attend Julliard, but dropped out. Many top jazz players came from musical families, private lessons, etc. Everyone is different. Phil wasn't the first chair Trumpet player, was he? Cabot College is like a Jr. College, isn't it?
Oneness100 2 years ago
plus the reason Phil Lesh didnt perform on any noted jazz albums was because he was with the Dead. I dont know how good he was but just because he isnt well known for his trumpet playing doesnt mean he isnt good
0xXNirvanaXx0 2 years ago
If Phil Lesh was a noted trumpet player, he would have been called in to play trumpet if he was any good, he did have connections in the music industry with the Dead.
Oneness100 2 years ago
maybe he refused whatever the point is that he is the bass player for one of my favorite bands. i dont care whether he can play trumpet or not
0xXNirvanaXx0 2 years ago
Well, I don't think people are buying Grateful Dead albums/CDs because of his bass playing, Maybe it's because the people buying the albums/CDs are into pot/drugs/alcohol and partying along under the influence of drugs/alcohol. Maybe THAT'S the REAL reason... HMMMMMMMMMM... I think that is more truthful.

Go look it up on the internet. Many Leading psychologists have listed that it is a psychoactive, addictive drug that in many ways is worse than heroin because society has deemed it socially acceptable, but more people die from alcohol than ALL illegal drugs combined.
Oneness100 3 years ago
Ooo look at that. I agree with you completely here. That is the exact reason Marijuana and many other illegal substances should be legalized.

Oneness100 3 years ago
I think you should attempt to quit your addiction of posting rubbish on this video. If being away from this video helps your commitment to stopping, by all means stay away. I suggest you have a couple dozen beers and go for a long drive.
desolationrow 3 years ago
I don't drink, so I don't know how drinking a couple of dozen beers and going for a long drive is going to help me. Just the smell of beer makes me nauseous.. If you don't like what I post, then don't read it.
Oneness100 3 years ago
I really hope youre just being jovial..if not you are a total idiot despite the fact your comments already proved it.

I am more frustrated with the direction of music and society. I am not impressed with the Phil Lesh hype.
Oneness100 3 years ago
Its too late for society and as for the music scene...akin to a gigantic pair of soiled underwear - the skidmark being todays 'artists'. I dont know about you part of the world but in mine young people think England is in America, are totally illiterate except when it comes to sending text messages or updating their 'facebook' and are absolutely ignorant about everything - except what they see on TV. Then again I do live in arguably the worst 'city' in Australia..
desolationrow 3 years ago
I don't know how much you drink, but you did admit that you did. and don't call me a name because you can't admit that you may need to stop. It doesn't take much to get addicted to it. One sip is all it takes. Some people get addicted to it, some don't. Some know how to stop, some don't.
Oneness100 3 years ago
Listen, If I didn't care what people did, then I would say anything, but I do care. Why? Because I have and had friends and family members lives destroyed by it. I've seen what it does to people first hand, and I don't like it. It causes cancer, driving deaths, liver disease, kidney disease, digestive disorders, etc. People get thrown in jail from consuming it, etc. and I think society should learn to remove it. Some countries don't allow it, I wish this country was 1 of them.
Oneness100 3 years ago
Well, there are positive and negative aspects of ANY psychological behavior. I am trying to help others understand and decide to remove an addition that isn't healthy for them and for society. You are being obsessive about holding onto that addiction for yourself and society. Which one is positive? Which one is negative? Two way street. You have an obsession about keeping the addiction, I have the obsession about getting people off of it.
Oneness100 3 years ago
This is not a Phil Lesh site, this is YouTube posting of a video of Phil Lesh, with the ability to make comments. It is a posting by ArtisanNewsService, whomever they are. If ArtisanNewsService wants people to be able to post, then people can make postings. You, me, anyone. Now you have to resort to calling people names? Denial is part of ANY addiction, have you seen the movie Midnight Run?
Oneness100 3 years ago
Well, if you talk to various experts in the field a alcoholism, there are various stages of the disease. There are physical and psychological aspects. The decision to continue to drink is part of the addiction. I am not talking from a 12 step program, those aren't the only people that discuss it. It's the decision to stop and the ability to fulfill that decision, just like ANY substance. If you don't decide to stop, then you have an addition. How bad depends on how much and the frequency.
Oneness100 3 years ago
Well, so what you saying is that you don't want me to care about Deadheads?
Oneness100 3 years ago
Being obsessed with sobriety is certainly much healthier than being obsessed with drugs/alcohol, don't you think?
You mentioned that you drink beers, until you stop, it is an addiction. Personally, I think clubs will go out of business when there isn't anyone still going. Many clubs aren't doing to well. What happens is what happens.
Oneness100 3 years ago
Well, BB King isn't promoted as a Jazz artist and he admits to practicing to it at home. But if you go on Wikipedia, it clearly states that the have jazz influences.
Either way the Dead is not a band where musicians seek to improve their music skills......
Oneness100 3 years ago
Come on, if Phil Lesh is so good and people want to play with, he should have a list of people waiting to play with him. He got Jackie Greene? That guy is a small step above bar band level. Jam band mentality.
Oneness100 3 years ago
Not all reggae bands promote drugs within their music. Some actually promoted not to use drugs in their lyrics.
drblank1 3 years ago
BB King doesn't tout himself as being a jazz musician. He is a Blues Musician and he has shared the same stage playing with fusion artists so saying he falls apart playing with "those heavy players" is not exactly a truthful statement.
drblank1 3 years ago
what does beer have to do with phil? you guys are so random... but anyways phil is the man!
APsholesauce 3 years ago
One beer and you don't think you are abusing alcohol? Well, I know someone about the same age as you that had one beer, got pulled over when he left the bar, got tested at .06 BAC and actually got a DUI and he couldn't get it down to a wet reckless. True Story.. Kind of scary that in some parts of the country that the police can still site you for a DUI after one beer and .06 BAC level. People don't realize that it is up to the officer's discretion in some areas and they are cracking down.
Oneness100 3 years ago
One beer is still having some form of addiction to it. Did you know that depending on your body's ability to process alcohol that actually one beer can actually have an effect on one's ability to full awareness while driving a car?
Well, I have other ideas to promote music and keep musicians paid.
How about a non-profit organization that gets companies that make healthy products to fund on free concerts for the public and pay musicians money to play, but have it at alcohol free venues?
Oneness100 3 years ago
Dude, you're being a dumbass. I don't drink (AT ALL), but how can you honestly say it's not ok to drink one beer. There is no addiction is someone wants to drink one beer occasionally. I never drink and won't, but I think your statement is absurd.
markrosenberg21 2 years ago

It's deadly.
markrosenberg21 2 years ago
nope, don't drink diet sodas, try to stay away from artificial sweeteners, I don't eat at McDonald's.

The Grateful Dead rule!
My apologies.
GiggyStardust 2 years ago 2
That's great that you haven't had a beer in 6 months and that you say you don't use drugs. My opinion on how much I enjoy or don't enjoy the Dead's music is varied just I have stated before. I think some of their melodies were pretty interesting, but that's about it. I have never seen a top professional musician (drummer, vocalist, guitar player,, bass player, etc.) list any of the GD band members as being major influences on them.
Oneness100 2 years ago
and is that how you judge music, by what other professionals think, the gd were all professionals in my opinion, they were all musicians in there own bands, jerry was a country player who played banjo and other stinged instruments and toured across the country, the dead was put together to move away from the country and blues rooted music, wich i think they did successfully ,and they were not looking for fame nor to influence anyone greatly by there playing, they were focused on there music and

You're just a complete moron
markrosenberg21 2 years ago
Nope, I don't take any over the counter, under the counter, etc. haven't for many, many years.
I try to eat as healthy as possible. I don't drink sodas either, haven't for many years.
Oneness100 2 years ago
Psychedelic drugs have a lot of scientific value. The idea of a plant, or fungus, altering the way that the mind perceives everything is incredible. These drugs also allow people a realization which brings them closer to their fellow people and the earth. It is incredibly difficult for me to see how you can find that problematic or negative for society. If they get in a car and drive, then it's bad, but in general, the drugs are not a problem for society. They're beneficial.
markrosenberg21 2 years ago
I didn't say it's not OK to drink one beer. I used to drink occaissionally years ago, but after doing some personal research, talking with people, I found out it isn't healthy so I decided to stop and haven't had a craving for it since. But unfortunately, our society promotes the use of it and by and large tells people it is ok, but it really isn't. One of the many lies perpetrated by our society.
Oneness100 2 years ago
I do not use drugs. The Grateful Dead is an extremely important force in my life. You are conceited. Please, you have already ruined John Mclaughlin, stop seeking attention.
GiggyStardust 2 years ago
Really? Do you drink beer/wine?
Oneness100 2 years ago
Yeah, I have one of their CDs because i was hoping they could take some of the songs and do a jazz interpretation that was worth listening to, but I guess whether it was a jazz version or the real thing, it was a waste of my time.
I would rather listen to Alphonso Johnson's solo records, he's got positive music to listen to. He uses music to create creative imagery without always using lyrics.
Oneness100 3 years ago
BTW, those were jazz interpretations and your assessment is YOUR opinion, but at least there was better musicianship involved and they weren't tripping on acid while playing the songs.
Dead songs are simple songs to play. I've seen bar bands play them at almost the same level of musicianship. It doesn't take much to play simple chords, rhythms and sing them off key or flat, just like the Dead would do on a regular basis.
drblank1 3 years ago
That is simply false dude. The members had a connection unlike any other band. Everything was planned when bands like the Allman Brothers performd, but the Dead had a connection that allowed to do incredible improvisations. They are far from simple guitar parts. Yeah, there are simple songs, like Franklin's Tower or Touch of Grey...But there are also very complicated songs. It is not the difficulty of a song that is important, it's the craftsmanship. The songs are complex chord progressions.
markrosenberg21 2 years ago
My name is not Dude. Secondly, go out and get the Mahavishnu Orchestra songbook and try to play their music.
Many of the GD songs were simple for drummers. That's the perspective I am coming from. They did a lot of experimentation, but it was drug induced. That was their thing... I am not going to waste any more time trying to analyze their songs, I find them to be fairly uninspiring to listen to and it is their drug culture that is the real turnoff and negative for society.
Oneness100 2 years ago
How can you say this "drug culture" you speak of is negative for society. A group of people who had/have actual morals an values that are what is true to being a human being. They care for the earth, they want nothing but peace...These are positive things for society. Right now, mainstream society lacks all of this. people do not have legitimate opinions anymore. They care about nothing, but getting wasted. This is a group of people that represents the polar opposite, how can you call them negat
markrosenberg21 2 years ago
Do you actually know what it takes to have a peaceful world? Removing drugs/alcohol from being consumed is part of it. Do you know how many innocent people die every day from drugs/alcohol abuse? How about the kids that grow up in an environment of drugs/alcohol that get subjected to their parents drugs/alcohol abuse? Have you seen anyone become mentally ill from LSD?
Oneness100 2 years ago
No, in order to have a peaceful world, the first thing that must happen is a removal of religious beliefs. That is the main source of violence in this world. People obsess over their version of an attempted answer for life. You should realize that alcohol abuse and LSD are not the source of violence and hatred in the world. One source of violence is when people force their radical beliefs on others, AKA what you do. Don't discredit incredible musicians based on your own ignorance.
markrosenberg21 2 years ago
Removal of Religious beliefs is also part of it. Also, Political egomaniacs is another. Drugs/alcohol are fueling many of the people that get involved with violent acts.
Yes, I feel like people are trying to FORCE their beliefs that the Dead is something I have to get involved in. I've listened to them, but I don't find much fulfillment listening/studying their music. Sorry. They just don't insprire me that much.I can't listen to a particular song more than a few times. I've at least tried.
Oneness100 2 years ago
drugs and alcohol changes people's behavior.
Oneness100 2 years ago
Also, what are your religious views?
markrosenberg21 2 years ago
First off, what does that matter? Secondly, I haven't found any Religion to be worth practicing as I don't find them to be helpful from a practical standpoint nor do I find them to be full of honesty. Most of the Religious philosophies tend to be dogmatic and not practical. Some worse than others. I am more into Spiritual based psychology (NOT Scientology, that's a Religion.) Not into EST either.
Oneness100 2 years ago
Here is a little experiment that I suggest for people that don't think they are brainwashed by the Dead.
1. Take a year from doing any kind of drug/alcohol.
2. Don't listen to a single song/recording of the GD for 1 yr. and listen to music performed by consumate musicians other than pop music.
Some suggestions: mahavishnu Orch., Return To Forever, Weather Report, Zawinul Syndicate, Trilok Gurtu, Shakti, Youssou N'Dour.
If you aren't brainwashed, you shouldn't have a problem doing this.
Oneness100 2 years ago
hahahahaha ok substances and the grateful dead are 2 different things and what is the point of taking a year off of listening to a band you love anyways??? and you can hardly call the dead pop. none of their stuff made it into the pop world ...the only reason they survived was dedicated fans. and your suggestions are nice but i would rather hear a jerry solo than an al di meola ego run down the fretboard any day. i would very much never like to meet you.
SirSampsonSimpson 2 years ago
I think you are missing the poknt. It seems like some of the hardcore Dead fans don't expand their listening to other forms of music/bands/musicians is very narrow minded. I've probably have listened to more Dead songs than you have listened to other master musicians that are recognized as such by leading jazz critics. The more sophisticated the music, the harder it is for some to understand it. That's OK, I wouldn't like to meet your either SirSampsonSimpson.
Oneness100 2 years ago
it is actually because of the grateful dead that i first got into jazz so i think they have expanded my musical influences more than anybody just by focusing on improvising so much and giving their fans such a deep appreciation for it. if it weren't for the dead i don't think i would have ever majored in performance in jazz guitar because i wouldn't have been into it as much. so yeah from my experience it is the complete opposite of everything you have said about the dead.
SirSampsonSimpson 2 years ago
No, Charlie Parker's music didn't have lyrics about using drugs, nor did he have people at concerts trying to legalize drugs, nor did Charlie Parker distribute drugs.
Quit making excuses based on fallacious reasoning.
IF I did have a beer, I certainly don't go anymore and don't drink anymore. Haven't for many years. Yeah, society promotes that stuff and I am hear to NOT promote it by awareness. Why are you putting people down for NOT promoting or using it? Isn't that counterproductive?
Oneness100 3 years ago
Using drugs is entirely different than PROMOTING IT through the lifestyle they HEAVILY promoted and PROFITED from.
And I suppose that all of the people that attend Phil Lesh concerts are clean and sober? I highly doubt that.
Oneness100 3 years ago
You're an idiot. Nobody had more heart than Jerry and Co. it was all about the music for these guys.
They were constantly on the road and would play for 4-5 hour sets at a time. This is why true music lovers, whether they smoke pot or do other drugs or not, gravitate(d) to their shows.
The jamming and added dynamics beyond "normal" pop/rock music is almost a drug in and of itself.... just cause you can't hear the music don't be hating on it!!
bobshenix 2 years ago
I guess if your on drugs/alcohol you might think their extended jams is music. I found most of their jams to be quite mindless noise. I used to practice to Europe 72 album when I was 12, I stopped after about 3 months because it was boring. It is actually pretty simple stuff to play from a drummers standpoint. Most of their stuff is simple blues-folk based with a slight tinge of jazz, but their jams are more drug induced BS. But that's MY opinion. WHY? Because it is my right to have one.
Oneness100 2 years ago
First of all, ever been to a dead show? Tell me how Rhythm devils is a simply blues-folk based drum beat? The rhythm section of the dead is incredible. Now their jams are an example of incredible musical talent. Everything is perfectly crafted. If you cannot understand that, then you are not a true musician. To not like them is fine, you're entitled to your opinion, but to belittle their revolutionary style and take away their credit is simply ludicrous and any true musician would agree
markrosenberg21 2 years ago
Rhythm Devils, from the recordings I have heard seems more freeform drumming. Now, in terms of chops, Mickey Hart did develop some decent chops. BK on the other hand, seemed really sloppy to me. Either that or he was too high. When drummers/musicians do drugs, it affects their playing. To me, Rhythm Devils becomes quite boring. That's just me. I just didn't "get off" on it. Sorry.
I'll take a Trilok Gurtu, Zakir Hussain, Tony Williams, Billy Cobham solo any day of the week.
Oneness100 2 years ago
markrosenberg21, I heard one of your songs on your website. NONE.
Oneness100 2 years ago
Dude, I play guitar...You discredited an entire band based on their drummers. As I said, you are entitled to your opinions, but many of your statements are simply incorrect. I know many people that like the grateful dead and do not do any drugs. That is a ridiculous statement and simply immature.
markrosenberg21 2 years ago
Well, you talk like you have a vast knowledge of drumming and you only play guitar. There are MANY aspects of the band I can discuss, some are positive and some are negative. But yes, I don't think they have that great of drumming. Allman Brothers' drummers were by far, better players as far as a duo drumming situation. They have IMO, better jazz/blues chops, dynamics, better feel and I prefer thier playing. They inspire me rather than boring me.
Oneness100 2 years ago
Suggested Revision:
If you are using drugs or alcohol, you could think of their indulgent jamming as music. I used to practice drums to their Live Europe '72 album when I was 12. Now I am 13. From the standpoint of a drummer, it seems to be fairly easy stuff. Mostly simple blues-folk with some jazz, but I feel that their jamming becomes tedious and seems drug induced. But that's my opinion. Why? Because I have one.
Good for you on the whole opinion thing, next time try not to be so negative.
GiggyStardust 2 years ago
I am just stating MY opinion and I am just being honest. I can't help it if these guys really aren't as good of musicians as their drug/alcohol induced fans THINK they are. I can't help it if their music is pretty easy/boring for a drummer like myself to play. I can't help it if the GD drug/alcohol induced jamming sounds like BS to me. It's my opinion, I am not the only person out in the world that thinks the same way, I knew of many others that think the same way.
Oneness100 2 years ago
Were you aware that people that use drugs and alcohol are actually lowering the collective consciouness of the human race? Basically, drugs/alcohol create a more UNENLIGHTENED society. Unfortunately, the Dead missed the boat on that whole discussion. The more drugs/alcohol one consumes, the closer to unconsciouss they become and it pisses people off that don't drink or do drugs as that is the part of society that is trying to raise conscioussness levels.
Oneness100 2 years ago
Hate on the Dead all you want. It's your right to have an opinion but it is not your right to make such blanket statements inferring that anyone who could possibly like this "music" must be stoned or drunk all the time.
You are merely judging based on a stereotype. Based on your answers... I could make a wildly opinionated, stereotyped accusation that you are a self-righteous, higher-than-thou prick who hasn't experienced nearly as much as life has to offer because of your CLOSED MINDEDNESS
bobshenix 2 years ago
I never said Deadheads "were drunk or stoned all of the time." From my own research, reading, and discussions with people that are drug/counselors, it is always a good idea to remove oneself from a parttcular lifestyle/triggers that promote alcohol and drug usage until one gets a handle on negative addictions. Plus it is a good way to find out if you are brainwashed or not.
Oneness100 2 years ago
And they paid the ultimate price for abusin didn't they? It is a reminder not to do it, yet followers of the Dead still go to concerts using and abusing.
I just think it is bad karma to be part of that band and to promote them.
Plus, this is a free society where people have freedom of speech, is it not? Why are you trying to have people that speak differently not be able to post?
Me bringing YOU down? Maybe you are feeling just a little guilty of promoting a drug based band.
Oneness100 3 years ago
If Phil Lesh is so good, why does he have to go publicly that he is looking for musicians to play with? Why doesn't he just call all of these jazz players to play with him?
