There is an extraordinary series of videos at: torturingdemocracy. org
If you click on the "Watch the Program" in the top left panel you will find the most extensive and detailed assessment of torture under the Bush administration I have seen so far.
YT has a few very short series of videos from the aforementioned torturingdemocracy. org website.
for example: "Torturing Democracy" Excerpt #4 - ( watch?v=NJzjge4tWD8 )
In the "Torturing Democracy" Excerpt #4" video. US Navy Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape School (SERE) ex-Master Instructor Malcolm Nance expresses his views on torture.
As a SERE Master Instructor, Nance taught people how to resist torture. As such, he knows of which he speaks.
"We have recreated our enemy's methodologies in Guantanamo. It will hurt us for decades to come. Decades. Our people will all be subjected to these tactics, because we have authorized them for the world now. How it got to Guantanamo is a crime and somebody needs to figure out who did it, how they did it, who authorized them to do it, and shut it down because our servicemen will suffer for years" - Malcolm Nance
Exceprts from Retired Vice Admiral Lee Gunn's testimomy before Congress in early March.
"An independent commission could undertake the task of examining the facts and, in so doing, weigh the true effectiveness of the Bush administration's torture tactics. Did torture actually uncover actionable intelligence? Did it interrupt plans? And did it actually save lives? If so, what were the countervailing costs to our national security?" - (cont.)
(cont.) "Did the use of torture spark terrorist recruitment, increase danger to our troops, and damage U.S. leadership and prestige? And did these costs outweigh the benefits? Might actionable intelligence have also been obtained by the non-coercive methods experienced intelligence interrogators experts recommend and employ? What strategic security gains could be reaped from shifting to a policy of complete, consistent and transparent compliance with human rights norms?" (cont.)
(cont.) "The Bush Administration's misguided embrace of torture, secret prisons and renditions to torture came at an enormous cost to our American values, our laws, and our counterterrorism efforts. Repairing our reputation as a nation committed to human rights and building a more sustainable framework for national security policy going forward requires a comprehensive examination of the policies and practices that sanctioned torture and abuse." (cont.)
(cont.) "This Congress and the new Administration have a window of opportunity to conduct an examination that signals to the American people and to the world that the policies of the last seven years were an aberration and that the United=2 0States is invested in creating an effective, long-term strategy for counterterrorism and intelligence gathering which adheres to American principles and values and to United States and international law." (cont.)
(cont.) "The stakes are incredibly high. In the balance hangs the ability of the United States to maintain the integrity of our counterterrorism policy; improve intelligence cooperation with allies; support the human intelligence community in employing proven, effective methods for gathering actionable information; and re-establish the moral authority necessary to restore the United States as a world leader in upholding human rights."
Thank you. My biggest concern is that we must demand accountability from our elected representatives. Accountability is our only defense against corrupt and criminal representatives. If we give that up, we're doomed.
MacMahon is either an idiot or a propagandist. These are standard definitions, and everyone who has ever read a spy novel is aware of them. What does he want to do with the psychopaths who are still at Gitmo, bring them home to dinner? They will dine on him and his family, with fava beans and a nice Chianti.
The classified thing is a red herring. Look at the crimes, and the nature of the criminals. What about their war crimes?

And some sad people still think that America is an "open society" where "freedom of information" is the rule - the U.S. is the coverup capital of the world.
It wasnt torture. Granted dunking someones head in a toilet over and over, and keeping someone awake for weeks is pretty harsh... But it doesnt even compare to what the enemy will do to us. The only thing is, you dont talk about it! I dont even want to imagine all the torture techniques that WEREN'T documented.
Yea surprise its a tribunal, how bazaar. Its almost like people have had their hands over their ears and screaming "freeeeeedom" and not actually paying attention. Every brance of government knew what was going on...
If we are going to go after them, lets go after all of them. But wait, that would be bipartisan and no one is really interested in justice.
Torture someone and they will confess to anything to stop the torture, this will not get the truth as the victim will tell you what you want. This gets you nothing.

Very good points.
The lack of attention to these issues by the media to the public will undermine our reconstruction efforts.

Hahaha. The public must not get a hold of any intelligence...
On second thought, maybe that's not so funny.
