i was a 2011 ranger and i saw 11 bears this summer but none ever would aproach the people like you explained. stand your ground and throw rocks i garantee you could have saved your lunch. did you listen to what your ranger had to say?
why are you letting a bear eat your food? youre supposed to yell no bear when they show up. plus since the bear ate the food, philmont staff will have to kill every bear with in a square mile of that location.
@marchoftheducks well, like i've said in past comments, if you took the time to read them, the bear walked up on us eating lunch. we yelled, and it was still about ten feet away from us and coming closer. the bear had lost it's fear of people, and we also ran into some philmont staff that was actually out looking for this bear since it was a problem bear.
I hope they didn't have to kill it... When I was there this year they said if bears start getting in people's food in staff camps then they have to kill the bear because it will associate people with food and become dependent and dangerous.
I've encountered bear on two occassions at Philmont. Usually they run away, especially when yelled at. They really don't want to encounter people, as of late food for the bears has been more scarce, and there numbers are really up causing bears to forget about their fear of humans. Except for the advisor grabbing his pack at close range these boys did as well as they have been trained.
Ive been to 2 treks on philmont the staff is very clear on what to do about bears. im sure one of them is not, let one person get really close to the bear that's feasting and save a pack. dumb dumb idea. the bears we say at philmont walked away fom us they really ar not intrested in the people at all, espically when they are talking i know a my lunch times my crew was loud playing games everything
@Wilson10sRebel You weren't there. you don't know what this bear was like, don't tell me we did stuff wrong. read the other comments before you lash out on people. the bear had no fear of people. we did everything we were told to do, but as you know, stuff never goes according to plan, and you have to improvise, cause the rangers at philmont don't tell you what to do for every scenario with every bear encounter.
I love the video. Little shakey - understandable. Unfortunately, this bear probably had to be trapped and relocated if it was this brazen. I never even saw a bear in 2 treks. (Saw one once in Canada. It climbed a tree, held on with one front paw and leaned out and stole a loaf of bread from our bear-bagged food.) Thanks for sharing this video.
@franczyk94 its called we were eating lunch. when you stop for a fifteen minute meal on the side of the trail in the middle of the day, you don't bear bag your food. read all the comments next time before you make yourself look stupid.
Well, you see, tge bear came up on us while we were eatng lunch. We were sitting on the side of the trail, eating lunch, an the bear walked up on us. It had lost it's fear of people, and we ran up the hill when it got ten feet away. Clearly you are a moron for assuming something. You could not scare this bear
You are a group of morons. If all you didn't just stand there and go look at it you might have been able to scare it away. And walking that close to the bear just to get your stuff was even more stuipd. You were lucky that the bear didn't attack you for your stuipdity. Next when you see a bear it is not a Kodak moment. You guy were lucky that the bear didn't hurt any of you for doing the frist stuipd mistake leaving your packs alone were bears and mini-bears can get to them.
@hikerguy92 you sir, are the moron. how can you tell us that what we did was wrong when you weren't there. if you'd bothered to read the other comments, you'd notice that i said this bear walked up on us while we were eating lunch on the side of the trail. we had a full crew of 12 people and didn't go up the mountain until the bear was 10 feet away from us. we were sitting next to our packs eating lunch in the middle of the day. read the other comments before you be a derp.
alright well the first dumb thing was that u left ur stuff layen on the ground for all mini bears and bears to eat away at ur food, chapstick, batteries, and ur platipus...if u would have been with ur stuff that would have never happened

below mt baldy my trekmate the great great great grandson of danial boone saw some bear cubs and just had to go try to play with them...well he didnt see the mama bear ...until he got close to the cubs....never saw someone run so fast in my life......back then the trekleader was required to carry a .45 just in case...one shot into the air stoppped mama bear in her tracks....
As a ranger, I never saw a bear that was that brave. If the food wasn't left alone I suppose there never would have been a problem. Oh well. It's a pretty cool story regardless.

about a meal and a half for 12 people. the pack just got food all over it and had to go up with the bear bags every night.

Did you guys forget what your ranger taught you to do if you saw a bear? You're supposed to chase it away...
jlsand23 2 years ago 3
yeah, that doesn't work when the bear has lost it's fear of people and just moves closer, even when you are doing all the things the rangers told us
