thanks for the info! Keep up the filming, you will live forever in your videos and you may actually save some lives . Gotta love ryobi drills, best on the market for price and reliability.
I notice you were careful not to bust the tiles or the mortar. You started the drill slow then picked up speed.I don't think you gave it full power. You might have, but yet you were careful not to bust anything.Nice job.I have used a chain all the way down a flue twirl it round and round being as gentle as I could while removing big chunks of creosote.Chain was heavy =not for girly boys.
thanks for vid. never saw one of those. I use a brush, and they don't do a lot. You can "up-n-down" all you want, there's still plenty of stuff in there. Part of it is probably the retards who built the chimney. It CLEARLY changes diameter by at least 2", maybe more. The brush is tight up top, gets pretty loose 1/2 way down. I keep hearing about "chimney chems" but they are in spray bottles....go figure.
@1982ridged I'm always amazed at the people that think I made this in my GARAGE! This is engineer designed equipment specific to the chimney restoration field and sold by Copperfield Chimney supply company. If you were a professional in this field, you would know that. Now, go wait in the truck, honey, the men are talking:(
@NummiSoldier A rude little kid, go figure. I don't drink, period. I have not drank for almost 10 years. I'f I seem out of sorts, it could be because of the medications I have to take, being a disabled vietnam-era vet as I am. How's about not shittin on my movies with your stupid accusations, huh?
The tool does the job but it could also damage the liner we don't use it because of that reason we do have a top secret solution to remove heavy creosote none toxic chemical works the best and fast call augies chimney ny li
@2jzfrank That was suggested to me before, A client told me that a guy selling liners told him the same thing. I took out a piece of 12x12 liner and TRIED to break it, to no avail. He was talking to a salesman, not a craftsman.
Further, masonry is pourous, so I don't use chemicals. There is a special head for liner removal, perhaps you should just trust me on this one, after all, I AM a mason.
It's important to protect yourself from exposure to the soot and dust. A vacuum can be attached at the connector below minimizing dust at the top.The deglazing tool works well.Sometimes the flue lining will spall a little bit.A scrapper tool on a rod can be used to remove the missed portions of creosote.Proper respirator ,soot suit.eye, hand protection are critical.Using the tile breakers work well. One would need to start at the bottom of the flue and work your way up to the top.
Thanks for sharing. First year wood burner here. Been trying to burn hot and dry. I'd like to do my own sweeping but I got an outdoor 35ft masonry chimney 10ft off a STEEP roof. How do you guys do it?
you will have to use two ladders, a little giant ladder or similar works great to put against the chimney. just lock it in the step ladder position and the side against the chimney will keep the side you are trying to climb from sliding down the roof. for added safety run a ratchet strap around to secure the ladder to the chimney
the liner will only break if you sit in one spot for a long time and if your chimney is broken down and had a fire or cracked already, in which case it would have probably already been pointed out 2 u
I took a piece of 12x12 and purposely TRIED to break it with the flail...it's impossible. There IS a liner removal device that is used with the metal rod system, but those tools are exclusive to professional chimneywrights.
Perhaps you need to talk to the professionals at Copperfield Chimney Suppliers. The metal rod system also has 3 seperate flue removal devices, depending if you are removing a 12x12, 9x13...Check em out. Oh, I charge $125 to use my wire brush. I charge $375 for scale removal with the flail. It's a good investment...If you do chimneys professionally. Some peole think I made this thing in my garage, I WISH! A lot of others don't know such tools even exist. Well, why should they, I guess.
The only other options are eitherleave it and let it have a chimney fire or reline it, At least this way you got a chance of not having to reline the chimney.

Seems like it would damage the inside by chipping or actually break it. Cheers!

this seems like it would break off the mortar and damage the brick.

A client said that once. I had a 2 foot section of 12x12 flue in the truck. I TRIED to break it, it was fine.
There are heads available for removing clay liners that use these rods, I haven't bought one, but they're neat in theory.

Maybe you are just crazy or you inhaled too much dust... you should give money to lung cancer research so they can fix you up when you'll get sick!

I just did get home from flailing a chimney. I got $375 for under 2 hours work.
What's so crazy about providing a necessary service at a tidy profit? Welp, I'de like to chat, but I gotta go to the bank...
