  • 1st time ive heard this live version and, yeah, the sounds a bit ropey at the start but so what. its a classic tune and for me its fantastic to hear ian curtis' vocal on it. but lets not discredit the version done by the rest of the members of joy division as new order. it's a wonderful tribute to thier friend.

  • It doesn't get any better than this. Greatest song ever made!

  • best version of the greatest rock song ever written

  • EPICA

  • R.I.P Ian Curtis.

  • needless to say that's way better than New Order

  • MIGLIOR VERSIONE !

  • To me it sounds like Ian says "Picture me and take his time watching" not "and then you start watching". Considering this was written in his darkest days it seems fitting that he'd be referencing an apathetic God.

  • I've listened to this song about 50 times in a row now and I see no end in sight

  • It was such a crime a clean version of this song was never recorded.

  • @Greentreewater Maybe that's the beauty of it.

  • this is hamlet is song form

  • This band was channeling an energy so mysterious & sublime...

  • Strange how the final recordings of Ian Curtis were muffled and distant.. As though it were some morbid, pedantic foresight towards Ian's inevitable self-doom... his voice and music growing fainter along with himself, a great musician and person. R.I.P. Ian Curtis.

  • @ness550 lol i don't think it's that deep. the engineer just screwed up. for shame too, considering this would be their last concert

  • @gunsnroses0000 aww come on. don't ruin it. lol

  • @ness550 lol hey i prefer your take on it to my boring (albeit realistic) version

  • @gunsnroses0000 and with hannet on the mixing desk as well, he was probably off his head

  • I prefer the gig version over the demo, despite the engineer's egregious error.

  • Is there a studio version of this? I have this version(live session) I'm using the song for a project, but I want Curtis' voice not the new order version. Any idea? thanks for the help in advance.

  • @BridgetteNicole89 there is no Ian Curtis studio version

  • @BridgetteNicole89 check my channel. I have the complete live recording, but Ians voice isn't present in the first stanza. :(

  • It's awesome hearing this, but being too young to have heard this the first time round.

The 'Music' people are making now doesn't even compare to stuff like Joy Division, New Order, Killing Joke, U2... It's almost a religious epiphany to listen to this for the first time.

    Love you Loads, Ian.

  • This song is somewhat haunting.

  • These songs bring tears!

  • after 30 years Curtis still makes me cry!

And indeed.....Coldplay sucks very much!!!!! ;-)

  • It's not just Curtis, it's the entire band. They feel really tight here and about to hit the big time before Ian was sadly taken. A great great band.

  • @johnmcluskey

Ian wasn't taken... he left, and robbed us all. :(

  • dislikes. only light a cigarette for Ian Curtis

  • This song leaves you thinking What If....

  • Golliwogg APPROVES of this song.

  • @sudhish86

It already did. Remember the post-punk revival of the early aughts?

The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, and countless other bands owe their critical acclaim from these legends.

  • and this because...coldplay SUCKS

  • it is definentley on its way back...post modern

  • It's incredibly tragic that Ian Curtis' greatest sources of inspiration, his epilepsy, his depression and his love for his wife also were his greatest demons, which makes his art so otherwordly good :(

  • @Sudhish86 your right my friend...this was an era that was so brilliant and fearless...it's on it's way back though....won't be long...trust me

  • Now why can't music nowadays have this same sort of passion, and be you know, real? Instead we have rap and pop and basically everything popular nowadays sucks compared to bands like Joy Division and New Order. It makes me sad.

  • The vocals are ruined. But I think it's the only version of Ceremony with Ian.

  • @svagana i love the super loud part of the vocals, a very touching song in all its fuckery.

  • @svagana it's not there are also two other versions but you can barely find them..

  • @ngollum This is the live version from "still" isn't it? The other two versions?

  • Ian Curtis is irreplaceable. Never feel the fire in the New Order version of this song.

  • Best version of this song. By far. Such a shame the vocals weren't recorded in the beginning...

  • @XCrusherX1 Yeah, it sounds like classic soundman-asleep-at-the-desk syndrome- they're there but sound like they're in the next room...

  • sometimes music isn't about the voice, this is a great example of powerful music without necessarily having a great voice.

  • @sora41333 I have to disagree. Ian Curtis simply had on of the most subtly powerful melancholy voices I've ever heard. His later recordings suffered greatly as his health was failing ( epilepsy), his marriage, that he was trying desperately to save after he had an affair, was falling apart, and he was faking enthusiasm for what was to be JD's first north american tour. His poor heart just wasn't in it at the end.

  • @JunFan777 i think you misunderstood my comment, or i didn't write my comment correctly. I didn't mean to say Ian didn't have a good voice i meant to say that he doesn't have the voice, say Adele has, yet it sounds perfect in the song because some songs do not need those types of voices. I find it that most people that don't like Joy division is because of Ian's voice and his voice isn't bad its just different.

  • This song makes me want to be a better man and stand up to all the shit that goes on around me.

  • Love Joy Division

  • theres some faint singing in the beginning of this song, I cant really make it out. Im not even sure if its Ian doing it.

  • @charliegrs Yup he's singing. There was a Microphone malfunction. He's saying. "I'll break them all no mercy shown, heaven knows it's go to be this time, (something) her all the things she said, the times she cried to fail to wake this time."

Gah, just listen to the New Order version of this same song. lol

  • @SpiffySpider They actually aren't the same lyrics you know. I listened to this song forever and this is my opinion on it. ( I love New Order but they said it themselves that theirs aren't the Originals).

I'll break them all no mercy shown. Heaven knows it's got to be waiting. That she heard; the things she said.

As she cried too frail to wake this day (or time).

  • I think the story of Ian is about the saddest in the music world. He wrestled with his own life and eventually gave in.

  • curtis was the force behind ceremony ,thats why its such a fuckin anthem

  • Ian was a Godman. There is a difference. No ordinary man could express such raw emotion the way he did.

  • Listening to this you can hear U2, you can hear David Byrne & Talking Heads, you can hear every band that's ever been profoundly influenced by Joy Division. Brilliant

  • @stratfordct Talking Heads formed years before Joy Division, and were not influenced by them.

  • If everyone's life was a movie, this would play at the credits.

  • @XScrewAttackerX my friend in school said the same exact thing. Or for a tragic movie...

  • @XScrewAttackerX everyone's life?

  • this is the chilling, creepy sound i was looking for could be played in dungeons, caves, crypts, vaults, catacombs, tombs awesome

  • simply spine chilling.....

  • ciao Ian

  • Guys please check my channel and help my video Ceremony [Mix gig] get to 10k views for tomorrow. Its the only mix of ceremony live on youtube and the full version. Comon guys do this so the song can be heard at least... Ians Final Masterpiece.

  • @CertifiedGooner729 have you even checked it? I just want people to see the song I don't care for subs or comments. I just want people to see it.

  • I there is also an instrumental version recorded no?

  • @CoreOgg my version is the one that you can barely hear ian in its pretty rare. Check it out. :)

  • A sad day when he left us....

  • Watching love grow........................

  • full version of this song in my profile, Please check the live version. Do this in Honor of Ian's passing May 18. Get the views up to 10,000 guys!

  • @PsycoticPanda7 There wasn't any puzzle, twat.

  • which version is this? i take it there are like 6 versions or something

  • @joru100 there are 3 versions of Ceremony by Joy Division. There's this one; the live one. There's the demo one, and then there's one from a soundcheck i think.

  • @Supergrasser1 true, but i was also including new orderr

  • @Supergrasser1 there are around 5 or 6 versions. There were only 3 live performances, but each version differs from the other. Some audience members decided to record it as a fast pace and high pitch version and others a low pitch version. Check my mix gig video to see. :)

  • masterpiece

  • live in Birmingham

  • Magic Song

  • This song always reminds me of sunshine and promises that may have been heartfelt.

  • Lads check my channel out. I will try to be as modest as possible. It shows Joy Division performances live and some hard to find material, I just want people to view my videos and spread the word tis all. I have 3 versions of Ceremony (Not including this or the memo one)...

  • When will kdp plans a tour to England ...........

    I'm sick of human garbage

    Listen to joydivision

    And cry

  • guys check my version of ceremony out its the full version of this song. :) please and thank you for the sake of exposing Ians work to the public more!

  • Si pero Ian Curtis la escribio.

  • waaaakkk!!! es mucho mejor la version de new order!!!

  • @nirvana00711 Ala verga que pinche poser te leíste con eso de que es mejor la versión de new order.

  • By the time I heard Bernard do this one live, he had surely polished it to a finely honed, sharp, pointy edge that pierced me deeply that night at Darien Lake long ago. Hearing Ian sing it here is a fantastic treat. I wish the sound had captured all of him better. He is really laying it down and letting it out. Fabulous!

  • joy division is a great part of my life soundtrack... i'll never forget the moment i discovered this

  • @littlejoytree how long ago was that?

  • JORGE VISION

  • Jesus, it's good... this song almost moved me to tears :L

  • 26 people suck!

  • the drumming so fucking good

  • Watching forever - Iain is...

  • @garysteel1984 Ian.

  • @5c0tty Yes that is true, i read somewhere someone who knew Curtis and the group say that one of the tragedies to come out of his death was that his work would be seen in light of how he died, not that it was all such brave, courageous and open work. I think what i meant is that for me, this song is a song i always come back to when i think of/revisit JD. It encapsulates his heart, what he put into each song and performance.

  • rock needs this honesty again

  • Comment removed

  • @waywardsuns It's out there I'm sure! I think we all need to be honest again

  • @waywardsuns, rock needs this much angst and desperation again....

  • Maybe not the greatest JD song, but the one with all the heart and soul, so to speak, of all their songs. Beautiful.

  • @EMC2Scotia - name one JD song that doesn't have all the heart and soul? He put everything into every song

  • My favourite version of this song

  • There are certain songs that touch something deep within your soul and Ceremony is definately one of them. Ian Curtis sounded like he was already on the other side, singing back through an open door that would soon slam shut. There are better recorded versions of this song around but this is by far and away my favorite. This was a transmission from the abyss and Ian Curtis was for real.

  • Man... Over 450 plays on my iTunes and I still can't get enough of this song. Def a permanent staple in my life.

  • This is so great!

  • ceremony is from which album???

  • @Guitargirlmx Never got on an official album. Might be on some compilations though.

  • @hummingbird830 It's on still.

  • Comment removed

  • @Guitargirlmx This version is on the live part of the Joy Diviision Still double album (on vinyl it is anyway), The version with Sumner singing was released as a 7 and a 12 shortly after New Order formed. It's not on any of the original New Order releases, but doubtless appears on something or other that got the definitive or best of, that I don't own.

  • If you want to hear Ian's raw vocals on the first verse, download it and put it on your itunes, boost the volume to +150% and select 'Vocal Booster' on the equaliser option. It just makes it that little bit better :)

un nuevo ritmo que cambiara la musica comercial hare quedar bien asudamerica gracias a esta gran banda

  • Ian Curtis isn't a God, he is a man. He makes that clear by vividly sharing these very real human emotions in his music. Thank you Ian for sharing your pain, and your love and making me feel a lot less alone in the world. Joy Division for life (:

  • @Ezimmerman89 So you SPlatter your emotions like a wayward graffiti junkee.

  • @Ezimmerman89 you said it better than i ever could, even though i feel and think the same way...i agree...Joy Division for life! for better and for worse....

  • @Ezimmerman89 "when rock becomes our religion, our gods are rendered mortal"- Kurt Cobain

    R.I.P. Ian

  • @MrPeguin666 you just mentioned two awesome musicians that, sadly, had troubled lives.

  • Ian Curtis's daughter Natalie, says her favourite Joy Division track is the New Order version of this song.

  • A man who absolutely had to take a stand against The Beatles System SOund Check, Mr.Curtis: one of Pop Music's finest, if not the very best, poet-lyricists. Vale, Fr.Ian

  • @wisprworld Another marketing SCUM LARD - fuck off.

  • People get upset about their favorite songs being put in commercials because it, like Cambruoso said, "devalues and makes the song seem irrelevant."

'Love Will Tear Us Apart' is my favorite song of all time. If I saw it being used in a Coke commercial, I would honestly cry. Because it's so personal, and the song stands for so much more than just pretty lyrics. It's helped me through some pretty rough times.

I understand why people get upset over it.

  • @SkateMentallity Well said man! It has helped me out as well through young rough life.

  • Say "Bohemian Rhapsody" was used in a Coke or Pepsi commercial. There would be a lot of angry Queen fans for vainly scaring the memory of Freddie Mercury.Or "Stairway To Heaven".Zepplin fans would lose it.They would be angry because a legendary song was used in a cheesy Coke commercial. So they and the remaining band members could add to their already bulky bank accounts.I can understand maybe "The One Hit Wonder" bands, say from the 80s.Cause they probably can really use the money.

  • I saw this song used in a fucking commercial!! Can't remember the company, because i was so distraught.New Order, you should be ashamed of yourselves! What are you going to sell the rights for next?Blue Monday or Love will tear us apart?

  • @cambruoso Absolut Vodka

  • @cambruoso

who bloody cares... the average music listener (esp. here in the states) won't even know who it's by & won't care to look it up either :-/

  • @pessimystica Well what is an average listener?I'm not.Maybe the current generation accepts musicians"selling out".But as a true fan who listened to this music since i was younger.Since "Blue Monday" was first released as a 12" vinyl record. When a song i really like is used in a commercial it devalues and makes the song seem irrelevant. Not to mention the compromising of artistic integrity for selling the rights to a meaningful song from a very influencial legendary band.

  • this song sounds more modern than new order

  • so fucking pure

  • brilliant then ... timely now ... who knew?

  • Guitar sounds alot like the Edge,,,,,,very cool song and pictures !

  • So many thanks, EXceptionnal version.

  • JUST TWO CHORDS , 30 YEARS AGO , BRILLIANT ! TIMELESS

  • You will find it under New Order it was the first single they released after Ian Curtis died, 12 inch version is superb.

  • takes a couple speedballs before this sounds any good.. but then anything does.. even morrissey :S

  • @CultureCunt :)

  • Thank you sooo much for the song and the pictures - a wonderful tribute!

  • It's very haunting to know that this was Ian's final performance. What a way to go, to end your career just like that. Long Live Ian Curtis...

  • @thrillerman83 Yes,long live Ian! What a voice!

  • Wow, this is even darker than Interpol, which I find highly amazing.

I rate this 6 out of 5 stars.

  • I think it's on Still which is a live collection of Joy Division songs. The quality of the recording isn't great though

  • does anyone know on which album this song is present? at first glimpse it looks like it is not on any album

  • I'll say it again class sound. I found my Vox Phantom here btw. It was not cheap. But the sound is still thick.

  • Forever...forever...forever...Ian...forever...

  • Thanks for this video!

I love Joy Division and this song makes me think the band could have been even greater if Ian didn't die. In this song Ian performs great, by the time they recorded this the band was improving a lot, in my opinion this song is one of the best of Joy Division.

  • I love both Joy Division and New Order but I totally prefer New Order's version of this song....

  • Comment removed

  • @THiRAKAULiTZ You've got to consider this is a very bad quality live version, I think if they had the opportunity to record it properly it would have blew New Order's version out the water, Ian would have given it the emotional connection it needed, shame really...

  • @Renegademaster15 No doubt brother no doubt.. damn and it had to be their last song written.. How I wish it could have been recorded properly... This music will never.. die..

  • I can't believe that i broke up crying when i heard this song. Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga could never do that. It's probably the most depressing yet uplifting song of all time if you know what I mean.

  • 1980- along time ago. I was at this gig I can remember his brown Doc Martin shoes baggy jeans and Nelson House check shirt. Me and a mate were thinking of running off with the Gibson that was on the stage that wasn't a stage. They looked so ordinary but they were anything other than ordinary. Sharp clear chords, the biggest drum kit I had seen, cables all over the place and him sitting down by the drum kit towards the end. Glad I didn't go to the UK Subs.

  • @Dave45582 thats really cool that you seen him, I was born in 1980 so I was too late , but must have been an awesome night

  • @Dave45582 dude u should have.. u would have a ireplaceable momento man.. i wish i could get my hands on an original photograph of ian man.. this is my favorite band of all time..

  • @Dave45582 David, my envy of you is great but you were present to witness something special for all eternity...Music is the sound of the soul and JD captures it perfectly.
