Sure, they saved our universe from collapsing, but they're stuck in a different universe that's about to collapse and their only hope of escaping lies 8 years into the future. Add to that the fact that even if they managed to return to our universe, they were banned from the solar system by the UN. By a loose enough definition, that qualifies as a "horrible tragedy". And it certainly doesn't get resolved at all either...
@Studmanafier I think of 002 from Cyborg 009 who was almost *definitely* an inspiration for J, but I can't think of many more. I feel like I should know of more than just that, though, but I do need to watch more anime.

@koopakape he's also got the speed of 002; the line of descent, as it were, is obvious. He's very much a tribute to 002, much as Gaogaigar is a tribute to the hot-blooded kick-ass we-will-do-it giant robo series of the 70s and 80s.
I don't know know why but i think i like soldato j more than guy when it comes to the 2.I just think j sounds and looks better despite not really being hot blooded in my opinion.
Agreed. Guy's awesome alright, but J does a lot of the same stuff Guy pulls and makes it look easy.
Remember the first fight against the Eye and Arm Primevals? Guy's getting his ass kicked, Arm goes in for the kill... and BOOM, here comes J riding an ES Missile through the nearest wall, arms crossed, scarf fluttering in the breeze, *totally unfazed* by his method of entry, like it's something he does every morning.

the 3 "rules" that the production staff of this show probably followed:
1. make sure it emulates the classic action and look of 70's and 80's super robots
2. make sure no horrible tragedy happen to the main characters that dont get resolved on a positive note.
3. above all else, dont be evangelion.
