  • They had spur-cut bull and pinion gears, which accounted for the moaning and groaning. Literally music to my ears. Postwar cars have helical-cut gears which are much quieter.

  • Going back to its roots, these old trains had that familiar groaning noise as they accelerated.

  • The "A" Train, 8th Avenue Express.
