Aspire One Linux HD video ability

720p runs great under Windows. I installed Ubuntu 9.10, but I can't get 720p working *boohoo*. Adobe Flash also sucks. But Compiz and Emerald look great! I'll try to post a vid soon.

720p .mkv rips play perfectly on mine running XP with CoreAVC and windows media player classic. I don't know how you could set up Linux to do the same but the Aspire One is definitely capable of HD playback. 720p films play super smooth and look amazing. I haven't tried 1080p because the screen is only 1024x600 so no point and it wouldn't look any better than 720p.

Nvidia made new drivers (i think BETA) that suports HD on linux and if u install them, problem with 1080p will dissapear.

from what i've read the main bottleneck is the SSD and the slow transfer rates. The software in conjunction with the Atom process should scale well though.

I think , like you say that, 480p is sufficient with the screen size because to get a nice 720p you have to be about 1g ram to run smoodly.

It might be abit hard to upgrade the ram, though. The Ram slots are on the bottom of the motherboard, and yo0u pretty much have to disassemble the netbook completely before upgrading. I'd just stick with 480. Sadly, alot of stuff coming out now is all HD 720/1080p. You might want to get your main computer to downconvert any media that can't be found in 480p.

I only tried the .mov HD trailers from the apple website. VLC plays pretty much any format. The trailer I used the most is called Watchmen, the other one with the windshield wipers is called Flash of Genius. I don't know much about Watchmen, I just chose it because the picture was funny.
