Naples, FL - Unusual Sunset Rays- Atmospheric Phenomenon (+Michigan & Arizona) July 2011

It is a Mars sunset effect.

You need 2 things for that;

1) ionisphere reflection with the critical angle (sunset make this angle)

2) particles in the atmosphere that stops red and green light

What that means

1) massives waves for make a ionisphere mirror.

2) nano particles in the atmosphere (on mars it is a red iron oxyde "rust")

Ey! that hap´pens often from six to eight months ago, it started to be very often... at sunset... Those are anticrepuscular rays/shadows. Clouds or mountains cast shadows that can be seen if the atmosphere is hazy. They appear to get wider when looking toward sun, then reconverge Into a point in the other. This is due to perspective, as sunlight is parallel the shadow width doesn't change over distance. Just as a road is the same width its whole length, yet would appear to vanish into a point if you stood in the middle and looked in either direction.

This beautiful phenomenon has been happening almost daily here in Colorado. I assumed it was due to all the moister lately. Don't know for certain however.

In the Naples vid it was probably water vapor being illuminated since the airmass would have been nearly saturated that day.

The Arizona vid was probably dust being illuminated which is why the color is a bit different between the two.

When the sun has just set where you are, it is still shining over your head through the atmosphere parallel to the ground so it can illuminate stuff that is over your in the air.

It is sunlight.

The setting sun is shining around a distant towering cumulus cloud. The sun is set (this usually happens from sunset until about 15 minutes after) where you are and is shining over your head through the atmosphere. The bright streaks are water vapor or dust in the atmosphere being illuminated by the sunlight. The dark streaks are just clear air that are in the shadow of the distant cloud.

Think of it like a shaft of light coming through a window into a dusty room.

Wow, I saw very similar rays in the sunrise on the 29th in Wisconsin. I took pictures and made it my phone's home screen because it looked so cool. Didn't realize it was that unusual (I usually miss the sunrise/sunset). A few minutes earlier, there were clouds with bright spots that looked like an atom bomb.

I saw similar last year in Phoenix. The sun was setting...there were pale pink rays in the west...but they were also, at the same time, in the EAST....and the rays...MET in the sky overhead!!!! Once sunlight hits the atmosphere, all rays get scattered. Depending upon time of day and the condition of the atmosphere, this scattering becomes more diffused(spread out). This is why the light in the morning and evening is so soft and often, a "warmer" color. In the case of these rays, it can happen in a variety of ways, but the reason you see the rays is because the light is obscured by clouds in the distance. The dark portions are the shadows cast by the clouds.

It is 2 shadows caused by 2 tall condo complexes on the horizon as the sun sets. An easy way to verify... Go to the same place at the same time the next day, providing the weather is similar. Keep it real. Peace.

Approx 9pm UK time on Thursday 28th July as I walked to my local store I recall seeing the sun setting as usual BUT noticing clearly that there was what looked like ANOTHER sun set in the east direction where it should have been darker with some clouds/chems.
