I saw Maynard a couple times before. He truly knows how to jive with the audience and make them laugh in between numbers. Whoever is yelling is a total asshole.
Wow that goes back. I was at this concert in Almonesson NJ in 1982 (if this is that concert which if I remember correctly it is) with my Dad as a kid in high school. Maynard did have a few disparaging words to say. I was shocked, the guy was a jerk. Maynard was a great guy, got him to sign an album a few years before his passing for my Dad. Greatly missed.
master: racist? Naw, there's definitely some truth to the aforementioned remark. Try shopping - you;'ll see and hear Mom & 8 kids or groups of'em, lol.
There are those of us lucky enough to have been at a gig at Auletto's in Almonesson NJ in 1982 where a drunk kept chiding MF to 'play a real f----- high note'. MF was the same way with that guy, even offering to pick up his tab if he wasn't satisfied! After the guy was ejected physically by members of the audience, Maynard honored us with a dazzling 'Pagliacci' topped off at the end with a quadruple (you heard me) high C. His gift to us, his friends! God rest ye, ol' pal.
I hope that guy hit a pole on the way home killing his entire family and paralyzing him from the arms down. (He will need his arms after the guilt of killing his family gets to him and he blows his head off) I mean what a douchebag!
"He must be a Herb Alpert fan." lol "Same problem with my first wife", Henny Youngman stuff. Maynard was a seasoned performer and new all the age old traditions of keeping an audience along with him the face of great adversity, in this case by using old comedy to deflect that awful heckler.
Maynard was a class act. The loudmouth in the audience was handled in a way that was reflective of Maynard's generous personality! Buddy Rich would have inserted a drumstick or two up that drunk's ass!
@trombonechops It was 1973 at the Le Bastille in Houston,Texas.I drove 250 miles down from Arlington with my dad to watch Buddy and the band play. A heckler just like this guy was Heckling Buddy and the band..I remember the guy yelling at the lead Tenor Sax player,Pat LaBarbera and then Buddy and Paul Congella, the bass player. This guy would NOT shut up! He was standing way across the room about 50 feet. All of the sudden Buddy threw the sticks nail'd the guy in the head and chest! Applause!!!!!
Must be a Herb Alpert fan...I had the same problem with my 1st wife...I'm running out of Woody Herman lines...LMFAO

The man is so cool. He is the greatest: always nice, kind, and the greatest of a musician. We miss you and love you, Maynard. RIP.

I saw Maynard at a small club in Mansfield Ohio back in the mid 70"s.
There was a drunk female in the audience that was being loud and belligerent and Maynard sort of introduced her as Doc Severinsen's mother.
It was one of those things where you had to be there but I rolled off my chair
laughing. He was the consummate Pro and has probably inspired more trumpet players than anyone else in my lifetime.
