I used Photoshop CS3 Extended on Windows. CS4 is okay....but I recommend CS3.

And as for where you can find good images of video game characters, you can just Google them in Images - but then select "Only Large Images" or "Extra Large Images". Or type in "Renders" after the character in the search bar.
