A lot of people might only see this a a love song and Puroboriqua13 made an excellent point of other meanings of the song. to me the song is about commitment in relationships.

Recently Ben Gibbard said on the radio this song is about his thoughts of whats after life. That maybe there is no heaven or hell (That they both are satisfied illuminate the nos on their vacancy signs) and we all just go into this limbo state (maybe thats why he walking into all dark).
