Yep, pointing your toes absolutely helps. I was a competitive gymnast for 10 years - can tell you that aside from earning style marks for looking good, pointing your toes also makes things like these WAY easier.
I just did 2 times, 1st :hold 45s,after 10 mins rest, 2nd: hold 60s....... not that hard, but harder than sit up~ I think it will quite helpful for ur abs :D

it helps to point your toes. Try it. If you notice all the gymnasts do it too.

Something that helps me is to think about pushing your hips forward. This will help you get your l-sit much higher. =]
