I edit on Sony Vegas too, it seems the biggest problem is the random lighting levels, alot of shots are underexposed and don't match up with other clips. Right click on a dark clip and hit video event fx. Then go to colour curves. Drag the dot on the top right up and to the left to brighten up the image, and the opposite with the dot on the bottom left to darken it. Have a tweak around with it, it's really flexible in fine tuning the brightness and contrast levels in shots :)
