I like James Dean, but I think we made a legend of him, only because of his tragic death. Marlon Brando is a legend thanks to his acting talent. idk I think dean was more popular because brando was a bad boy, but he didn't look like one, and only starred in one rebellious movie the wild one, and I believe brando had an easy life, he just got into fights as a teen cuz he thought it was fun, where as dean really was a rebel before the movie scene, fought because he need to, and he just looked cooler - he wore a leather jacket everywhere, smoked everywhere, heck he even drank during shootings lol

Also, Montgomery Clift came first and introduced method acting in movies like Red River, his debut film. James Dean may have looked up to Brando, but no one has left a legacy like he has with only three movies. Yes, Brando's legacy was better because he lived longer. James Dean is just as great, if not greater and I am not the only one who thinks so. RIP Jimmy.

LOL...James Dean has MORE fans than teenage fan girls. I'm in my late 30's and know many 'women' who love him that are not teens. Also, Johnny Depp was quoted as saying he read the Mutant King a book about Dean that turned him on to acting. Elvis, Pacino, Martin Sheen, and Dennis Hopper are admirers of Dean also there are other actors that highly regard him as a great actor. I just wish that people would recognize that not everyone thinks that Brando is the better actor.

Didn't James Dean used to practically stalk Marlon Brando? It kind of freaked him out, both are great with legacies but honestly marlon was better. You can ask any actor from Nicholson to Depp to Dicaprio when it came to acting Brando was GOD and everyone has been playing catch up ever since. I find it's mainly teenage fan girls that try to elevate Dean to something more than he was, brilliant actor but definitely not on Brando's level. Heck he would probably be embarrassed/annoyed to hear it.

James Dean worshiped Brando. He was obsessed with him and didn't just want to be like him, he wanted to BE him. Brando was slightly annoyed by Dean's fascination with him and never really understood the hype about Dean as an actor. I read about both sides of it in their separate biography's. I like both but Brando is definitely better in my opinion. Marlon's the greatest actor of all time so it's kind of crazy to try and compare anyone to him... even Dean.

Dean did copy Brando, especially in East of Eden. However, as you can see in Giant, he had much more range than can be seen just in Rebel Without a Cause. He was an accomplished stage actor and that's how Elia Kazan found him for East of Eden. He also did a few episodes of General Electric Theater that still exist in copies that were excellent. He had range, talent, and drive - it's a shame he died so young.
