We've used this in ballet class for years, and I never realized it was this...that makes me happy. We do ragtime tendus and jetes in classical ballet.
@Gunblastz - That's no lie. It's an ad for a player piano. They played music off of a roll with holes punched in it. Some of them had the lyrics printed on them so you could sing along as the roll went by. You didn't have to touch the keys at all. Doesn't get much easier than that.
People compare Joe Lamb to Joplin and say they're equals and I never understood that. This music is seamless there is not one misplaced note—for example :38 - :50 is stunning in its compactness. Even the best Lamb rags had awkward moments that just don't feel perfectly placed like the chromatic statements at the very beginning of The Sensation—they are some bizarre attempt to mimic Joplin and that comes across clearly. This music however is flawless as far as music is concerned.
@EMPERORMIKI big difference between Joplin and Lamb was that Joplin was a professional trained musician (had private lessons, trained in classical, went to college to learn harmony, composition) and Lamb played and wrote purely for recreation. Lamb was self taught. Lamb also admitted in interviews in the 50s that he was aware that on occasion Joplin like phrases would appear in his music. Joplin admired Lamb's music and they remained close friends to the very end when Joplin died in 1917.
@Doug19752533 I doubt what schooling Joplin got affected his ability to write music to any significant degree, and the lack of for Lamb as well. Joplin's intuitive rhythmic sense is obviously greater than Lambs. I would argue that this is due to natural talent more so than any training.
@EMPERORMIKI oh without a doubt. Joplin had true natural talent that was of a higher degree then Lamb's. after all Joplin was picking out tunes on the piano as a young child. But because Joplin had a formal education he was a much more refined artist then Lamb. Joplin was composing for the future (among his now lost works were outlines for a symphony, a piano concerto, and various classical works) and Lamb wrote for personal enjoyment. interesting though in 1909 they both composed a rag together
First time I ever heard this was on ELP's album works 2 and played that album over and over again about twenty years ago. I knew it was Scott Joplin but never heard it in its original form until now. Truly superb but ELP do a great version too.
l wonder what happened to Joshua Rifkin. Some years ago he was responsible for the revival of Scott Joplin and was very popular. Having seemingly dedicated himself to ragtime piano he was considered the leading exponent of all things Joplin and was the reason why l and who knows how many more pianists took to learning the complexities of the style. l'm beginning to wonder if Rifkin is still with us..l hope so!
I've been working on this piece. I've got the A part mastered, and the B part almost mastered. Still got the C and D parts to learn. Makes my hands tired!
@kurtvonschleicher Actually, Jazz music would continue to form a bridge between Black and White throughout the entire 20th century, it only really ended when Jazz wasn't a popular music form anymore; at the end of the 50's. nevertheless. the Love/Hate relationship is amazing.
@waynee2012 my cousin told me to find a song on her phone on youtube while we were driving to the mall and i chose this piece and she cranked the volume up so loud that i couldn't hear anythning else. I had the same experience as you :D

Joplin was like Chopin in that he was a composer. I personally think Chopin is better than Joplin ... but I also don't like Chopin's music very music, but I do Joplin's.
