  • We've used this in ballet class for years, and I never realized it was this...that makes me happy. We do ragtime tendus and jetes in classical ballet.

  • Why am i thinking of a mickey mouse episode from 1969?

  • i love this song

  • me too!!!!!!!!

  • great Rag. mmmmmmmm so sweet....nice...so happy time.

  • A blackman ......with a colorful mind.......

  • Who says they didn't have rock'n'roll in the 19th century? They just hadn't quite put electric guitars and a drum kit to it yet.... :P

  • This makes me think of Charlie Chaplin :D

  • This music conjures up delightful silent comedies, is energizing and takes your cares away better than a bubble bath.

  • Authentic Victorian French Whorehouse Music! Pass out the cigars, brandy and absinthe!

    It's Pimp Music! 1899 Style!

  • @PaulieRomanov That's quite a saucy trollop over there by the zoopraxiscope, eh old bean?

  • makes me think of steamboat willy for some reason

  • This also sounds like an ill bar fight.

  • 1:34 = lies!!!

  • @Gunblastz - That's no lie. It's an ad for a player piano. They played music off of a roll with holes punched in it. Some of them had the lyrics printed on them so you could sing along as the roll went by. You didn't have to touch the keys at all. Doesn't get much easier than that.

  • @TuberOnTheLoose

I guess so. but I'm just saying that this piece is hard to play. That's all.

  • With ragtime, you don't get much more classic than Scott Joplin.

  • People compare Joe Lamb to Joplin and say they're equals and I never understood that. This music is seamless there is not one misplaced note—for example :38 - :50 is stunning in its compactness. Even the best Lamb rags had awkward moments that just don't feel perfectly placed like the chromatic statements at the very beginning of The Sensation—they are some bizarre attempt to mimic Joplin and that comes across clearly. This music however is flawless as far as music is concerned.

  • @EMPERORMIKI big difference between Joplin and Lamb was that Joplin was a professional trained musician (had private lessons, trained in classical, went to college to learn harmony, composition) and Lamb played and wrote purely for recreation. Lamb was self taught. Lamb also admitted in interviews in the 50s that he was aware that on occasion Joplin like phrases would appear in his music. Joplin admired Lamb's music and they remained close friends to the very end when Joplin died in 1917.

  • @Doug19752533 I doubt what schooling Joplin got affected his ability to write music to any significant degree, and the lack of for Lamb as well. Joplin's intuitive rhythmic sense is obviously greater than Lambs. I would argue that this is due to natural talent more so than any training.

  • @EMPERORMIKI oh without a doubt. Joplin had true natural talent that was of a higher degree then Lamb's. after all Joplin was picking out tunes on the piano as a young child. But because Joplin had a formal education he was a much more refined artist then Lamb. Joplin was composing for the future (among his now lost works were outlines for a symphony, a piano concerto, and various classical works) and Lamb wrote for personal enjoyment. interesting though in 1909 they both composed a rag together

  • 1 person has no hearing sence

  • First time I ever heard this was on ELP's album works 2 and played that album over and over again about twenty years ago. I knew it was Scott Joplin but never heard it in its original form until now. Truly superb but ELP do a great version too.

  • この曲もう大好き!!

  • @jazzy0505 WHY???!?!

  • @MrBenlus クラシックなのにjazzyなとこが好きです。

  • @jazzy0505 ah ok :D

  • @MrBenlus HAHAHAHAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • fucking A song

  • this sounds like something my mom would listen to maybe

  • seriously, i danced very hyperly to the whole song and i twisted my ankle!

  • l wonder what happened to Joshua Rifkin. Some years ago he was responsible for the revival of Scott Joplin and was very popular. Having seemingly dedicated himself to ragtime piano he was considered the leading exponent of all things Joplin and was the reason why l and who knows how many more pianists took to learning the complexities of the style. l'm beginning to wonder if Rifkin is still with us..l hope so!

  • somehow,, i think off cooking mama when i hear this song... o.o

  • I've been working on this piece. I've got the A part mastered, and the B part almost mastered. Still got the C and D parts to learn. Makes my hands tired!

  • @thetoxicsoul Been working hard on the trio (Part C). Yikes. :)

  • I want to walk into a bar where they play this track on a loop, then knock back some spirits and challenge some impolite stranger to fisticuffs. :D

  • Who is playing the piano?

  • it's incredible how america loves and hates black people, depending on the historical period. the jazz era was a love period. it ended in 1929

  • @kurtvonschleicher Actually, Jazz music would continue to form a bridge between Black and White throughout the entire 20th century, it only really ended when Jazz wasn't a popular music form anymore; at the end of the 50's. nevertheless. the Love/Hate relationship is amazing.

  • someone missed the like button

  • For many hours, I used to listen to Joplin tapes while in my car. They made the whole world look like a silent movie--a funny one at that.

  • @waynee2012 I need to put on scott joplin and see, that is funny lol.

  • @starletdempsy Thank you for the response. I hope you enjoy the experience. W

  • @waynee2012 my cousin told me to find a song on her phone on youtube while we were driving to the mall and i chose this piece and she cranked the volume up so loud that i couldn't hear anythning else. I had the same experience as you :D

  • @igotsmoshedify I am so glad you enjoyed the experience. I hope you get to do it again. W

  • @waynee2012 i will :D

  • @waynee2012

    I do too. XD

  • Un solo aggettivo - Geniale

    zelig46

  • After all his accomplishments, it's sad that he died penniless, insane and alone. His grave didn't even have a marker for many years after his death. RIP.

  • justin beiber disliked this video

  • i have a total soft spot for ragtime. it always gets me tapping my feet. <3

  • @immehgen nice comment

  • This is very good i like this song.

  • This piece is SO fun to play! It's so cleverly written. Joplin was a goddamn musical GENIUS.

  • they should have a movie with a saloon fight with this song

  • The sad thing is that Joplin wasnt recognised in his work until after he died. this is a masterpiece :)

  • Hey I play this one too... and I think I'm not bad. But I got like 0 Views.

Please check my Video out cause I'm new

  • @XxNextGenVirusxX - I've had a listen, and like your style! The subtle variations in tempo and dynamics breathe life into it. More, please.

  • COmplètement fan !

  • It's not as close as it wad this morning! But I hot going on!

  • I loved playing along with this. It all of a sudden in fast or slow I found more control thanks Scott and thanks for posting.

  • Great!

  • Does anybody remember a very silly SNL sketch where three tennis players from different eras are being interviewed on a talk show hosted by Scott Joplin?

  • THIS IS NOT WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR!!!! Good, though

  • I did a report about Joplin for my black history month project. He was such a passionate man. R.I.P Joplin. :D

  • HE WAS BLACK? (sarcasm)

yeah...also look up the history of rock & roll, jazz, ska, ... and the list goes on.

  • much better than Jelly Roll's version.

  • Anyone wanna make a silent film with this? I know I do, lol

  • i have check out my woodrow wilson and nixon movie it doesn't have the entire track but it has most of it

  • This version isn't fast at all, it is just fine. I love this song. I wish Scott Joplin would know that today, this is the best ragtime piece he's ever done. Thank you Mr. Scott Joplin! You are awesome

  • this version is really fast...

  • HE'S BLAAAAAAAAAACK!!!

    jk :P

  • orly?kthxbai

  • great piano ..... jerry lee fan

  • I looove this piece!! I played this EXACT version for my 7th grade recital!!! Ahhh memories... Of course I messed up, and started to cry... But Still!!

  • @Cinderellababe123 You are an incredibly brave person to try that. And I am a professional piano player.

  • the maple leaf was a club/ piano bar that joplin worked at while he wrote this song

  • Was the maple leaf a code name for a type of inspiration that existed back then?

  • DR UNGER<3 TPA MUHFUKKKAA

  • i like this variation at 1:10

  • i had no idea that scott joplin was black until i took the history of jazz at my college this year lol! the funny thing is i have been playin piano since 2nd grade and i could never master any of his songs except for the entertainer. his songs are amazing masterpieces

  • mostly jazz music are made from black people. I am so proud of them!

  • So does the rap garbage, what happened?

  • C'mon people get over the fact that he's black. Can't any of us just rate and comment on the freakin' video without going "HE'S BLACK!". Everyone here acts like if they've never seen a black person before. Regardless, this is a masterpiece!!!

  • hehehe

  • @pepifeo

Oh my god your right, he is Black!!!!!! Just kidding, awesome piece of American music history.

  • this isnt jazz though, rather the root of it

  • I'd take this over any of the stuff that's around today :)

  • best ragtime ever!

  • Like what Dr King said on The Boondocks?

  • Imagine what Joplin would say about the music- sound pollution, rather- of today

  • Many thought that exact same thing of his work then.

    Such a brilliant work.

You should listen to the first movement of Beethoven's Op. 13 piano sonata. It sounds tame but the music is revolutionary.

  • No such thing, you just listen to the wrong music I guess.

  • how is there dynamics on a piano roll

  • Joplin was seriously a genius. This Rag is just purely amazing. Learning it now :)

  • wtf is wrong with you man..theone1357919

  • r u insane retarded racist

  • no fuck you you piece of useless trash.

burns, don't it fucker? knowing your time is over?

so your gonna call names? nigger? ape? monkey? haha so fuckin what?! you cant. do. ANYTHING. and lynching days are over. guess what? years from now, little white, black and brown children are going to piss on the memory of pieces of shit like you - they'll laugh at you and they'll still know scott joplin's name.

but no-one, NO-ONE IN THE WORLD. will remember you or give a fuck you were ever here.

  • Hes the same of you but a different color would you hate you tube because it became black no because your a fucking idiot with no other intentions but to come here with racist intent and to destroy musical master pieces hurts knowing Scott Joplin was more successful then you'll ever be

  • Meant for

    theone1357919

  • @theone1357919 Jeez, dude...are you a white supremacist, or just here to start shit?

  • scott joplin is so cool

    this was before rap, rock,etc

all of it comes from this!

  • This is a very cute version of it. Love it!

Infinitely better than the "look how fast I can play!!!1!1" versions you hear all the time.

Anyone know who's playing this one?

  • I couldn´t agree more, this tempo is perfect in my opinion, you must have heard all the other playing this piece on youtube... Gosh! you feel anxious instead of enjoying the rythm!

  • God Bless Scott Joplin he is just amazing and may r.i.p i hope his great tradition goes on and on

  • Love this man! I collect Scott Joplin Maple Leaf creations. True genius!

  • joplin was like ''choplin'' , not all great composers were from europe, and not all were white!!!! long live joplin, one of the best composers for piano!

  • There were many starving muscians who sold their work for a dime and someone else put their name on it. Shame on those fake composers. Thank God Joplin was smarter than that and at least we have his music with his name on it! Long live Scott Joplin and all the other unknown lyricists and composers who never had a chance, black and blended.

  • um, scott joplin is dead

  • no kiddingy????? "Long live..." is a saying, as in his memory and genius will always be with us whehter he is physically here or not!

  • Those were like 5 comments at once. Slow down there, buddy!

  • Well, the comments are all musical and are linear and direct. But I know what you mean. I think this is where friends come in—some you can speak to about what you do and some you can't. Those you can't are for fun essentially—sort of rape like. But I do know what you mean.
