@RespectMyHate I have a theory that he's the ghost of Jamal's great-grandfather Ezra. It makes sense if you think about it: He was in the book in Ezra's trunk, and based on clues in later episode, we learn he must have lived before 1908. Also, he mentions something about a memory of being chased by dogs, which would make sense if he was a black man in the late 1800's, as slave masters back then would have used bloodhounds to chase escaped slaves.
