Edward V111 was forced to abdicate by the British government because he was a Nazi and actively promoted Hitler and Mussolini. The Mrs. Simpson stuff was a smokescreen to hide the extent of support Hitler enjoyed from him some of the British aristocracy.
personally i think she was his excuse to give up the throne he wanted out of being a king and she helped him get out.but as history shows the better brother went to the throne and showed strength on so many levels.and the queen mother and king george were there for thier country when the people needed them, and one note king george even with a stutter, was the better speech maker .
@soletongray i just think he was awsome he was strong and proved that when the chips were down he held strong,King george was stronger, more determined, he stood behind his country, during the war,saw it through. unlike edward who was weak, and when i said he was a better speech maker, he just sounded more confident than edward. i am sorry if it came out wrong.
@MVPSSY don't go all soppy. Wallis was a scape goat because the government didn't want people to know tge real reason: Edward was a Nazi! In this time the monarchy was idolised and were seen as role models the government didn't want one that was a Nazi.
Damn, love is blinding and wonderful, filled with LUST. Sorry. But I couldn't give up my Kingdom for a woman still in a marriage, and approaching her 2nd divorce. 10 Jan 2012 - darcal007
Wallis did Britain a favour. Edward was reckless and sympathetic to Hitler's beliefs in a time where the ruling monarch was idolised it's not a good idea to have one that's pro Nazi
What a catastrophe that he abdicated. How different everything might have been if he had stayed. There could have been an Anglo-German alliance. Instead, there was the worst war in history -- the self-inflicted mortal wound of white civilization. All for some American whore.
There's a great deal of ignorance in many of the comments. David tried to bring peace to Europe with his relationship to Hitler; he had no idea of what kind of a man he was dealing with. I have been fortunate in my life. I worked in Nassau, Bahamas for a while, and I knew a few people who were David's friends when he was Governor General of the Bahamas. I was told by clergymen that a more loyal Englishman you could not find.

God, I'm sick of that "the Royals are nothing but Germans" crap. Who were the Stuarts? Emigres from Brittany and Normandy via England and Scotland. The Tudors? Descended from a Welsh knight who married Henry V's French widow. Plantagents? Normans--which is to say Vikings. Virtually all of them married foreign royalty. There haven't been "English" kings in England since 1066.
@baraxor This is perfectly true if you are so stupid as to think that determining a person's Englishness is as simple as determining where a person's ancestors were born.
@wewd ah yes of course-- I see, I don't necessarily agree with the sentiment that, that makes the monarchy any less British as let's be fair, historically speaking we're ALL a nation of immigrants!
@coatsyc what do you mean? Do you mean that there hasn't been a king in the sense that since the civil war it has become a more ceremonial role? But whether the role is ceremonial or not the title is the same? I might be wrong I'm just curious?
@sarahelizabeth2289 Pretty sure he is talking about the German monarchs of England that have been ruling since the House of Hanover in 1701. The current monarch is a descendant of these Germans; in fact her real family name is Saxe-Coburg-Gotha which her grandfather changed to Windsor because of anti-German sentiment during WWI. They are still Germans by another name.
I'm not saying that King Edward VIII was not a good king. But, let's face it, emotions versus responsibilities. King Edward VIII chose the former. I guess, it was much better to pass his responsibilities to his brother, King George VI.

@RichardElden But it didn't do so peacefully. Just like every world empire before it or since. Many of our kings of the world at this moment, they can't face their problems. Satisfied themselves with their speeches published in newspaper etc.. . They don't have the courage of Edward VIII.
@yazgoon When watching Guy make the speech in the movie I thought he was over doing the accent, but after hearing the real King Edward VIII he did it identically!
The concept about The Royal Family is sometimes misundertsood.. They are the spiritual figurehead of the people, and must be accepted by the nation. Edward and Wallis Simpson, were not acceptable to the British people because their status was outside the traditional high standard of the nation. The two people who filled the space, were a woman who detested public life and her stuttering husband, yet they served the country with absolute distinction in the darkest years of need.
It was more than just for P***** why Edward VIII abdicated. He did not want the throne. Wallace Simpson was just the last straw. Besides, history would be quite different if he had not, so it worked out for the best. In contrast to the measured tones of his brother's speech, his is more natural.

"...But you must...believe me...when I tell you...that I have found it impossible...to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as king, as **Iiiiii** would wish to do..."
Every time I listen to this speech, that second "Iiii" always makes me laugh. I dunno why.
King Edward the VIII didn't have the Stamina to be the King in the Long Term as the Governments knew another Great War was coming. Wallis Simpson was put there on purpose to Trip Edward up and Disqualify him from remaining the King of the World Wide British Empire... The Bankers and Shipbuilders wanted him out.
His reference to "the British race" at 5:57 is pretty worrying when one considers his visits to Hitler. If he hadn't met Wallis Simpson and had remained King during WW2, god knows how different world history would have been
When I read comments such as we should of teamed up with Hitler I despair! This great nation of ours does not have the stench of death on our hands in the killing of innocent people such as the Jews in the "final solution" and other minorities that didn't fit in with Hitlers plan of an aerion race. Thankfully the majority in this united Kingdom are fair minded and reasonable people
@Fatoldbear Wait, yes we do. We've starved indians and slaughtered many a colonial uprising, We experimented with lethal gases, and we've bloodied our hands again, and again, and again. Hell, we invented the concept of the concetration camps, and all these things were supported with racism inherent in the culture, and the scientific or religious beliefs of the day.
Don't go forgetting the mistakes of the past just because someone else did something worse, or at least closer to home. :)
@Fatoldbear: We might be innocent of killing Jews, but we are far from innocent in history. Look up the Indian Famine, the Mau Mau revolt in Kenya (where Britain imprisoned and tortured blacks in concentration camps....sound familiar?) Gosh the list is long, those two were what came to mind, I'm sure if you google you could find lots more.
Point being: Briatin didn't build the biggest empire in the world without shedding some innocent blood.....
@Fatoldbear actually the British have been responsible for many many deaths. in fact the whole concept of a concentration camp was thought up by the British.
@Fatoldbear ... we did team up with hitler..... we joined the EU ..... as signed in 1942 by the brits, germans and americans on the doccument europäische gemeinschaft which is german for european community, this doccument states that should the germans lose the war militarily they could continue for a european dictatorship by political and ecconomical means ..... lets not forget also that the royal family are in fact GERMAN!
@Fatoldbear your right you dont have the stench of death of the jews on your hands. that stench you smell is the death of the countless Africans and Palestians you have aided others in slaughtering. Congrats :)
Whilst Edward was planning his abdication, Wallis Simpson was cuckolding him through simultaneously having an affair with a used car salesman by the name of Guy Trundle.
Clearly Edward was not fit to be King, so at least he did the decent thing.
Nonsence Edward may have supported Hitler (some belive this), but he had no "real power" and as a result he simply would have been ignored. Indeed the monarch of the uk is EXPECTED to stay out of politics.
@FreiherrHarkonnen BUF was never more than a few hundred hardcore supports. After Cable Street, which was very much misrepresented in the press, what little popular support they had haemorrhaged. Maybe if Mosley had more time in which to build his party before the War kicked off, he might have built it up to a proper party. As it is Mosley didn’t make history, he was reacting to events not dictating them.
@RichardElden ... I cannot belief I have read this statement! A 'hero & a truly great man!' He was totally and utterly selfish and thought only of himself! His selfish and weakness for an 'easy life' with married women caught up with him when he encountered the devious Mrs Simpson, who was, by all accounts, 'sleeping around' with others (including Von Ribbentrop ... Hitler's ambassador to London!) at the same time as she was enjoying the relationship with the King!! Hero? Great? No way!!!
I been reading books about royal family for quite a long time and that's before these movies been released.
All I want to say is king Edward viii always been less interested in the throne. Don't you think he didn't knew before he was dating mrs Simpson that one day the throne will come his way and mrs Simpsons issue will be raised?
Let's not believe parts of movie than the true british history.
I first watched this video after seeing a rerun of an episode of "The Waltons" called "The Abdication" played a portion of this speech. I did see "The King's Speech" and loved it. God save the Queen!
You know,I'm 50,so I wasn't around at the time of Edwardv III's abdication, but I can't help but have a small,(ish), lump in my throat when I listen to his abdication speech! There's always the perception that we Brits have this 'stiff upper lip' attitude. But I think, how utterly selfless was the Duke of Wndsor to make the history-changing decision to renounce his position as King & Emperor for love! I feel quite humbled listening to this slice of history!
Like you,I was unaware there was a full recording.I guess I shouldn't have been surprised though, given it's historical importance/significance.The idea that a king,some-1 who's meant to be a leader & to whom his 'loyal subjects' look up to can be 'laid-low' by a woman, lol, takes some getting used to.It's the kind of 'wishy-washy' way Prince Charles would behave, lol.
'...without the help and support of the woman I love'. Sappy much? For God's sake, at least TALK like a king! I can't even believe he would use that wording, especially at that time. Albert may have needed help with his delivery of his speeches, but Big Brother could've used some writing them. Love him or hate him for it, you have to recognize that takes a pair of you-know-what... I wonder why he didn't just keep her as a mistress? Could have saved himself so much trouble...
The long-term problem with just keeping Wallis as a mistress, was the improbability of Edward marrying anybody else as he was permanently besotted with her. Eventually, the people would have wondered why their formerly dashing PoW never married, the press would have broken the code of silence and "outed" Wallis, her history and the flashy posh lifestyle she and the king shared. Result: pretty much the same sh*t hitting the fan
I think the most intersting thing about all of this is that as he went with Wallace Simpson (and well done to him for following his heart and instinct...and balls) is that the Royal line of succession would not have changed one iota if he stayed or not. Saying if he was allowed to marry her in any case they had no kids. So it would have gone to next in line which would have been the current line in any case.
This poor excuse for a royal , like a number of others in his family and his circle, was a supporter of Hitler. I suppose they liked the idea of a dictator who could keep the common people in their place. If The History Channel is correct, during the Blitz he even sent a message through his Nazi contacts encouraging Hitler to keep up the bombing of England. A totally despicable man. His "love story", that pathetic thrall with the disreputable Mrs. Simpson, does not make up for the rest of him.
Edward was a totally selfish individual. He was raised with all the advantages, whereas his brother Albert, who later became George VI, was pretty much ignored ,this resulted in his stammer which he worked to so hard to overcome. King George VI is finally getting the respect he deserves.
@ShylaNY1, yes George VI is receiving the long deserved respect, but see @johnchuter's remarks below, and read the entire story. It's way too easy to call him selfish. He had to choose between the throne or someone he loves. If this was a CEO who loves his job more than his family, we would be looking upon that person with scorn.
If it were not for this man abdicating we would all be living in a very different country. The huge, unexpected burden George VI had to undertake was the saving of England.
God works in mysterious ways. Edward VIII was a bit sympathetic to Hitler and would not have been as stoically against the Hun as King George VI. Thank God for King George VI and his leadership against the nazis.
I hate this man, glad he had the stuttersor whatever. Can't believe that he wanted us to join Hitler! and when we declined he went and snitched to the Nazis!
I am glad that this man abdicated the throne. Afterall, then how could have we had such great king and queen, and now our most dearest old Queen, Elizabeth II.
@324wilson Since he had no children, Elizabeth would have become Queen Elizabeth even if he had not abdicated. However, her father might have lived longer and she would have certainly had more time to be a young wife and mother without the added burden and duty of being Queen. Since it seems Ed VIII had nazi sympathies, I'm very glad he abdicated and allowed someone far more worthy and capable to served in this position. He seemed an unstable sort better suited to parties than duty.
@calmguy1 You mean, he was a sex-seeking self-centered man who cared more about his sexual fantasy than his kingdom. Either that, or perhaps -to view it in the best possible light- he was an incompetent man who recognized his incompetency. But I doubt that, as he said himself that he simply didn't want the responsibility; he wanted the freedom to marry whoever he desired.
shame that he was buried in England... he should have been burned and his ashes flushed down the toilet.. this Nazi pig was a little coward and should have been shot by the English spies in the face

Roadracer987654321 1 year ago
His reference to "the British race" at 5:57 is pretty worrying when one considers his visits to Hitler. If he hadn't met Wallis Simpson and had remained King during WW2, god knows how different world history would have been

When I read comments such as we should of teamed up with Hitler I despair! This great nation of ours does not have the stench of death on our hands in the killing of innocent people such as the Jews in the "final solution" and other minorities that didn't fit in with Hitlers plan of an aerion race. Thankfully the majority in this united Kingdom are fair minded and reasonable people

Steele10000 1 year ago

Whilst Edward was planning his abdication, Wallis Simpson was cuckolding him through simultaneously having an affair with a used car salesman by the name of Guy Trundle.
Clearly Edward was not fit to be King, so at least he did the decent thing.

The best for Britain in 1939: Edward VIII as a rightful king and Oswald Mosley as a prime minister.
FreiherrHarkonnen 1 year ago
@FreiherrHarkonnen
Nonsence Edward may have supported Hitler (some belive this), but he had no "real power" and as a result he simply would have been ignored. Indeed the monarch of the uk is EXPECTED to stay out of politics.
theburgersoft777 1 year ago
@theburgersoft777 And what about the BUF and Mosley's support of Mussolini and Hitler?
FreiherrHarkonnen 1 year ago

The should do a movie on Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson with the same cast of "The King's Speech". Think of it as a prequel.

@popazz1 Well I'm 19 so I wasn't alive either! I didn't even know there was a recording of this till I found it here!! I was like WOW!!
CorieFaulkner 1 year ago
@CorieFaulkner ,
Like you,I was unaware there was a full recording.I guess I shouldn't have been surprised though, given it's historical importance/significance.The idea that a king,some-1 who's meant to be a leader & to whom his 'loyal subjects' look up to can be 'laid-low' by a woman, lol, takes some getting used to.It's the kind of 'wishy-washy' way Prince Charles would behave, lol.
popazz1 1 year ago
'...without the help and support of the woman I love'. Sappy much? For God's sake, at least TALK like a king! I can't even believe he would use that wording, especially at that time. Albert may have needed help with his delivery of his speeches, but Big Brother could've used some writing them. Love him or hate him for it, you have to recognize that takes a pair of you-know-what... I wonder why he didn't just keep her as a mistress? Could have saved himself so much trouble...
CorieFaulkner 1 year ago
@CorieFaulkner

So it would have gone to next in line which would have been the current line in any case.
angryadams 1 year ago
This poor excuse for a royal , like a number of others in his family and his circle, was a supporter of Hitler. I suppose they liked the idea of a dictator who could keep the common people in their place. If The History Channel is correct, during the Blitz he even sent a message through his Nazi contacts encouraging Hitler to keep up the bombing of England. A totally despicable man. His "love story", that pathetic thrall with the disreputable Mrs. Simpson, does not make up for the rest of him.
purplepeoplepurple 1 year ago
Edward was a totally selfish individual. He was raised with all the advantages, whereas his brother Albert, who later became George VI, was pretty much ignored ,this resulted in his stammer which he worked to so hard to overcome. King George VI is finally getting the respect he deserves.
ShylaNY1 1 year ago
@ShylaNY1, yes George VI is receiving the long deserved respect, but see @johnchuter's remarks below, and read the entire story. It's way too easy to call him selfish. He had to choose between the throne or someone he loves. If this was a CEO who loves his job more than his family, we would be looking upon that person with scorn.

I am glad that this man abdicated the throne. Afterall, then how could have we had such great king and queen, and now our most dearest old Queen, Elizabeth II.
324wilson 1 year ago
@324wilson Since he had no children, Elizabeth would have become Queen Elizabeth even if he had not abdicated. However, her father might have lived longer and she would have certainly had more time to be a young wife and mother without the added burden and duty of being Queen. Since it seems Ed VIII had nazi sympathies, I'm very glad he abdicated and allowed someone far more worthy and capable to served in this position. He seemed an unstable sort better suited to parties than duty.
