  • lot of planning in this, but oil on white bread doesnt seem like a great health food idea

  • I usually dump 1 Servings worth of steel cut oats into my smoothies too. Too lazy to cook em.

  • I think Walnuts are a better choice because of the Omega 3 content.

  • Wondering why no one got word of DietOramy meal plan? I was aimlessly using Google and found it - I have to admit it truly is the very first healthy eating plan program that I have tested out that does not cause me to feel relentlessly starving, and I'm still losing extra load.

  • I 'm not informed about some others however I can tell you that my family developed superior achievement with DietOramy program plan (google it, there are a lot data over it) - every one of us use it and our docs are shocked with the outcomes that came so rapidly.

  • I meant him last night and i played the good eats theme on guitar. You know what he told me. Alton: Son Don't ever play the good eats theme on guitar again lol

  • I thought it would be disgusting (like an earlier life experience i'd had with them),, but I decided to take Alton's advice and try the Brisling Sardines in olive oil,,,,,,, and ya know,,, pretty dang good :) and I'm not a fish lover,,, but getting older and realizing the importance good nutrition plays on my health, I'm making changes,,, and eating these a couple of times a week will probably be one of them :) :) :)

  • i just bought a bag of roasted almonds at topfoods :D whoo, he had me scared for a second~ they come pre measured handfuls so i can just keep them in my glovebox for an emergency snack!

  • sooo.... What if you don't have an oven...?

  • i bet alton's waist fell about 4:50

  • Ive watched this episode like a thousand times! Thanks for uploading, love the quality, and I <3 this episode!

  • Nice show!

I've recently started my own diet of whole grain sourdough, veggies, soymilk, no sweets, and only homemade beer a couple of times a week (combined with other healthy foods such as teas and fruits).

Combined with heavy exercise, I've lost 20 pounds in a month!

  • @BillsNewGuitar wow! congrats!

  • It is important to point out that Alton wasn't going for fast weight-loss, necessarily, but a change in his overall dietary balance that emphasized nutrient dense foods over energy dense. Overeating even good foods can make you fat. If you want to lose weight fast, set a caloric intake goal, and stick to it, and stick to nutrient dense foods, combined with daily exercise, and eventually the pounds from fat will drop.

  • "Water packed specimens are lower in calories but...I drain most of the oil before consuming" followed immediately by draining the oil directly into the recipe?

  • These smothies rock! This and peanut butter toast is about all i have time to make and eat in the morning

  • did he only toast one side of the bread?

  • @bscepter yes

  • He has a bunch of books out, but that one was a joke :)

  • Does Alton actually have a book out, or was that a joke prop for this episode?

  • @Doliath the "Buff Like Me" book is a joke BUT he does have a few books out. The 2 off the top of my head are "Good Eats: The Early Years" and "Good Eats: The Middle Years" plus a few others

  • you can add carrots in your smoothie too. 1 medium carrot would be fine. you can get your veggies in the morning.

  • That's the exact kind of lard we used at McDonald's before they changed to oil.

  • I feel weird about this episode. It's like all the other food I learned about on Good Eats, I should now stay away from if I want to be healthy. : (

  • Alton mah boi, I wonder what's for DINNER.

  • Whats the name of his book?? o.O

  • @NyDrPa the REAL name of his bok is good eats the early years its just about the show :)

  • his fridge must be enormous because the vitamix container is extremely tall... I could never fit mine in my fridge (I've tried!)

  • I finally got all the stuff to make the "purple" smoothie and it was good but my god buying the fruit is expensive..5$ for a 16oz bag of blueberries 4$ for 16oz pineapples and strawberries...bananas of course r cheap as can be, but jeez its expensive for only being able to make 4 whole smoothies, guess its better then buying vitamins eh?

  • He looks like he's lip syncing... D;

  • 2:28 lolz the camera man sees the sardine label :D

  • I mean this in all seriousness...I can NOT wait to make that sardine recipe!

  • @missbeatrix1 Is VERY tasty. And VERY filling. I couldn't even finish on piece of toast...was sad.

  • @missbeatrix1 im intrigued and want to try it too!

  • he got a lemon seed on one of those piece of toast xD

  • But... But... I DO eat faster with chopsticks....

  • Man, this guy is inspiring..... I wish he provided some more awesome recipes like that Sardine toast... Does have any published works or a website on eating healthy?

  • YOu could also substitute in the almond recipe reduced sodium woschestire sauce

  • I like this smoothie recipe, except I don't think ingesting soy milk is safe.

I would substitute raw goats milk, full fat yogurt or homemade nut milk. Even spring water or filtered water would work for taste, but then you still have to eat some good quality protein to make a satisfying meal.

  • @Food4Health1Spirit Good suggestions. I might even try Coconut milk with it.

  • @Food4Health1Spirit Why is soy milk bad for you? I thought soy was shown to help prevent breast cancer?

  • @Food4Health1Spirit

Could you explain why you feel this way?

  • @RandomMultiLives

    @Trankle

    Soy has many anti nutrients.

    Phytic acid blocks mineral absorption.

Phyto estrogens can disrupt hormone balance.

In Asian countries, only fermented soy is eaten, and only in small quantities.

Fermentation breaks down most of the anti nutrients.

Put "soy dangers" in the youtube search box and you will find more information.

The website of the Weston A. Price foundation has lots of good info as well.

  • "...good-bye.....chocolate covered everything!" Lol!

  • See, here's the thing. I love Alton Brown. He's awesome, and he can cook!

but uh... im 15, and here at my house, i dont have much power over the kitchen.

and when I make things, my family isnt so excted to jump in and eat it. Then, when I cook for myself, everyone gets mad cause im "selfish". but they wont eat it!

so how should i make delicious healthy food like this, if i cant go out and buy groceries? its tough, but sometimes i do my best...

  • @ofofob

Wow! They call you selfish?! In my family the rule is if you want it, ya make it yourself!

  • HAH...proto-guacamole...sounds like a great name for a band.

  • I love sardines, but I hate them with bones... that spinal cord is just gross. Get them boneless & skinless and, unless your averse to fishiness, they're fantastic. They're good for ~5 years, so they're a great pantry staple.

Nutritionally, they're high in the good fats. And compared to other fish, they're low in heavy metals which accumulate in larger fish (because they eat lots of smaller fish).

  • Too bad most of us can afford to eat like that. Love the shoe though. Best thing on TV

  • I love this show it inspired me to become a food scientist.......... yes that's a real profession and that's my major in college.

  • @aflockofmusic2 what a great career choice!

  • This is what I've been trying to explain to my mainstream diet-drawn sister and mother for ages, that it's not following a rigorous plan, but intelligently managing your intake so identifying your empty calories(chiefly Alton's "0x weekly" list). Wonder if they will watch this.

Not that the mainstream diets don't work, it's just that you have to follow them TO THE T and it is very easy to fall of the wagon, as it were.

  • There's a container in his fridge labeled "food".

  • @Mounesstastical Doesn't everyone have a container labeled "FOOD" in their refrigerator? Seriously, you mean you don't have a container labeled "FOOD" in your fridge? What do you eat?

  • you yell "sardine" and we got ourselves a panic...on the fourth of july

  • no more good eats! no! they stopped making the episodes

  • @violet7magenta theres a new episode on tonight

  • AB is one of my culinary hero's, when i saw this episode five months ago, i decided to follow the diet, since i already have to eat/avoid most of that stuff anyway... giving up pasta was the tough part... well, about half an hour ago i decided to heat up last night's pasta, well, i wouldn't have felt bad eating 2 servings of pasta this week if Alton didn't scold me at the end of this episode T_T forgive me! i only messed up once! lol

  • AB, i watched your show when you and i both still young, now, we both are getting old together...Btw, love this show very much!!!

  • Hope im not being annoying but does anybody know when the new episodes will be up?? I'm just curious.

  • I see a lot of people trying to scare people into never eating soy. Okay first off they all complain about it and add the disclaimer "if you eat too much".

Most of these doomsaying studies are done where they cram some poor lab rat with its bodyweight in soy. Unless you go absolutely nutso there's about as much to worry about as getting a winning lottery ticket. The same goes for sweeteners.

  • Right. Kinda like how Super Size Me should've put the disclaimer "if you eat too much".

  • What Alton does not tell you here is that America's love of exotic so called super fruit robs developing nations of cheap healthy food as we are willing to pay high prices for it. We should realy eat out own local or at least national foods such as oranges and blue berries.

Also eating high amounts of soy can be bad for you google is if you do not belive me. Mens Health Magizine had a great article about it not long ago.

  • Men's health is pseudo-scientific bullshit. They skim over scientific articles and then summarize what they think they read. Truth is, it has only been in animal studies so far, and the human studies were highly inconclusive.

Health benefits of soy, however, have been studied and widely accepted

So what if fertility is affected? With 6 billion people and counting, we have to slow the hell down sometime or we'll drain the world dry.

  • soy in massive amounts is hazardous for the immune system indeed.... buti don't trust Men's Health Magizine.....

  • I just gave mens health as an easy example for people to find since so many have a knee jerk reaction of hate when someone does not want to jump on the soy band wagon.

  • @nukeguy04: so we rob the developing nations by paying them high prices, raising demand, and increasing the prices of their goods, thereby allowing them to have a sustainable economy? Though a case can be made for local foods being more environmentally friendly.

  • To begin with we don't pay the developing nations all that much. Secondly the money that does go there stays in the hands of very few people, there is almost no middle class. Lastly if your poor and the cost of food goes up that leaves you even less to try to get ahead with. Food unlike most things can not be cut back on.

  • @nukeguy04 He's just here to show you how to eat healthy, not go on a rant aout developing nations and their food =/ and he's spoken about eating localy grown foods numerous times

  • Sardines are high in PCBs, which are nasty dangerous pollutants and toxins. The EWG recommends avoiding sardines totally because of this.

Light tuna isn't as tasty but even its mercury load doesn't compare to the PCB load in sardines. The EPA recommendation is light tuna is safe twice a week. (Tongol and Skipjack are even safer than Yellowfin.)

If we hadn't polluted them so terribly, sardines would be the perfect food. I love those things.

  • The Brislings are, I admit, WAY better than other brands of sardines.

But they're FAR from being "sweet in the can" - these are pretty fishy, no matter how much lemon juice I add. Also: They're about 3x more expensive than other sardines.

  • how depressing. He was one of the only FN shows that WASN'T pushing the food nazi, joy-free diet.

YOU CAN STILL EAT CHOCOLATE AND NOT BE FAT.

  • Watch 'till the end - Discipline.

He knows very few Americans would be satisfied with a half-ounce piece of dark chocolate and would go for a 500 calorie monster bar.

And one of those per day will add up.

  • yes, because .. you know what, never mind. Maybe some people have to start off like this, or they really will just throw themselves at every bit of junk food they see like a hyper puppy. I just can't imagine spending so much of my time thinking about what I can and can't eat.

  • too bad the 500 cal monster bar tastes like ass. Most people that go for that have never had high quality chocolate. a little of the high quality stuff goes along way.

  • Yes, you can still eat chocolate and not be fat. But the reality is that this show is nationwide and I'm pretty sure there are a few fans who are struggling with their self-image and need some direction in losing weight the right way. AB is being true to what he's been doing with his own life.

  • Anyone out there have a substitute for soy milk? I don't want all the phytoestrogens.

  • If you're not lactose intolerant (we have a few 'lactards' in our family), you can use milk. You can also use rice milk or almond milk.

    Per 8 oz:

    skim milk - 90 cal, 0 fat, 9 protein, 13 carb, 0 fiber

    almond milk - 40 cal, 3 fat, 1 protein, 2 carb, 1 fiber

    rice milk - 120 cal, 2 fat, 1 protein, 25 carb, 0 fiber

    soy milk - 80 cal, 5 fat, 11 protein, 12 carb, 3 fiber

  • @Malquey

Organic grass-fed dairy can't be beat. Grass boosts the omega-3 content of the fat. In yogurt form you also get a lot of helpful microbes and a nice tang :)

If you are lactose intolerant, see if you can stand raw milk if you can get it from a reliable source. It has enzymes that help people digest the milk, that are denatured in pasteurization. The fermentation process in making yogurt also helps make the dairy more digestible, so try that.

  • Alton looks great! Not only did he lose all that extra weight, it looks as if he dropped about ten years as well. Way to set a healthy example for us all!

  • @v0zbox

I think he looks much much older.

  • this show is so amazing, i love this guy. he's so passionate in his delivery, sounds so sincerely involved.

  • I have a fried who has to analyze a speech of something for homework.

    I'm gonna recommend this episode...

  • @ArthurGanate That's because he is.

  • @ArthurGanate yea. he does. and im not sure if its true, but i heard he doesnt take his paycheck from good eats he puts it right back into the show to help production. he only makes his money from commercials and iron chef. but like i said dont know if thats true.

  • I fuckin love avocado.

  • Ok, NOW I would have his babies....

  • I am SOOOO happy he mentioned these brisling sardines. I had never heard of them before and now I absolutely love them! My only problem is that I have to fight with my cat a little when I break into a can.

  • I wish he set the candy boat on fire that would be funny

  • Thanks for the tips.

By the way, "Worcestershire" is pronounced "Wustershire", I know because I live in Worcester.

  • I have been dying for him to do something with sardines. I love those things!

  • @Celestyal22 i just ate one of those bread/avocado/ sardine OMG delicius and so easy to make

  • Thank You! This video has been very relevant to me. I've been a fan of Alton for years and I attribute most of my cooking skills to Good Eats and his books.

  • mmm sardines.

  • I'm sure you noticed already, but there's a bit of audio desync in this.

  • Had to toss in a JAWS reference, well can't say I blame you!
