So when you play traditional grip do you tilt your left shoulder down alittle so you can have better control over the strokes are something like that?Anybody?
@kelseyXyeslek You can really get drums for any price home skillet.
I reccomend going to Musician's Friend and ordering the ddrum D2 drum kit. It's for beginners, but it sounds really good, and includes stands, throne, crash/ride, and hi-hat cymbals.
I bought one for my daughter because she's interested in drums now. I tuned it up, and adjusted it to my specs, and it sounds really well, even with the heads. In my opinion it's the best beginner kit you can buy.
is it weird that my natural impulse when doing traditional grip is to grip it from underneath with my right hand? Im right handed and i find it quite awkward to hold it that way with my left hand, i lack power and control with it, so i use my right hand with it.. just wondering if im the only who has this problem?
@BennyVengeance888 When I first started using Traditional I had the same problem. Just keep practicing with your left hand, and you will eventually be able to build the same speed as your left hand matched grip.
The pad of the thumb is connected to the first knuckle of the index finger forming a "T".This is the secondary fulcrum. The middle finger is relaxed on the stick, index and ring finger should be parallel. The stick is resting on the ring finger between the cuticle and first knuckle. the picky should be relaxed in the same curvature as the ring finger. And lastly make sure the thumb is in a straight line with the forearm pointing at the elbow. Thats the grip. Power will come with exercises.
gibson00000000000000.. The fulcrum in the traditional grip is the webbing or your hand between the thumb and index finger just stick your hand out like your going to shake someones hand and stick it in the webbing. Relax the finger around the stick. Life the elbow about 1'' from the head firm the grip with no gabs in the fingers thats really important.
i love the good old fashioned traditional grip its never failed me to get the job done. I think the shaft is the best to grasp and the tip beats the drum....ohh yeahhh
I'm a guitar player who knows only a little about the technical side of drumming. But I know an excellent teacher when I see one and this guy seems like an incredible teacher. Good lesson.
I love watching this video i practice gripping my stick as he goes and practice beating on the sack cuz its soft and absorbs the pressure of my sticks u see it hurts my wrist sometimes if i dont hold it the right way and beat the sack too hard any ideas what im doing wrong. I have good results at the end though it seems to produce good squeeze as i say it. :D
Traditional (marching band or jazz) grip isn't something you are likely to figure out without instruction. It took me about two weeks to get used to the left hand. Explaining this is detail is a real benefit to beginning drummers. You can easily learn the other methods and decide when to use which.
Drums don't produce a specific note. So keys and the specific notes of the melody line don't matter much to drummers. If they did you would be playing xylophone :)
I'm not perverted, but before I looked at the picture before I clicked on the vid, I thought he was talking about "how to grip your penis". I'm not perverted, I'm just saying. All these other people are. "How to Grip your Stick" haha. Get real people. That's not funny, and I didn't laugh. But b/c of these perverted people, he should've said drumstick.
Also, people use different grip styles, don't post a video saying this is how you do it, if it only works for people that have the same style as you! You should put this is how I grip my drumsticks!

ummm. how about modern day snares? i never heard anything about this version. when i play. i dont pump my arms. they stay prety still and my wrist does the work.
It all depends on preference or your instructor. My instructor has us use both wrist and arm. Wrist adds control. Pumping the arm adds more body and volume and creates a more "full" sound.
The traditional, AKA correct, grip allows for drawing different tones and sounds out of the drum. For those who value musicality and the tones of the drums this is the way to go. If you just want to pound on them, then I guess these notions do not matter.
@mojoganjamaster420 That is a complete load of shit. I'm in a band with 3 of my close friends, all of them can play there instruments very well and have at least 4 years of experience each, including me. However, there has been several occasions where my band mates play on my drum set and they have had major problems just getting a basic beat down. I can say that playing the guitar requires no skill and anyone can do it, but that doesn't make it right, now does it?
sorry, i'm with gamedillon12 on this. being able to play one instrument is no guarantee of having the skills to play drums. the skills on, say, guitar do not transfer into a set of skills relevant to playing drums. skills for viola do transfer to violin and vice versa; the skill sets for organ and piano are slightly different, but contain sufficient similarity for transfer. likewise oboe and clarinet. 'any other instrument' to drums is not a likely transfer.
The famous drummer Virgil Donati uses trad. grip...does he hold the normal way or in some special way? hes famouys for hes exetremely powerful and fast left hand, even if he use traditional grip.
well matched IS superior actually. Even Virgils says so himself, if he could start over again he would go for matched grip becouse its stronger, easier to develope and makes more sense anyway. I agree.
He says you use more muscles with the matched grip in your arm which makes it less hard to play for a long time.
with the traditional grip, when your left hand makes a stroke, do the supporting fingers let go of the stick when rebound occurs? Kind of like how you showed in the beginning with your hand open making single strokes.
2) I am trying to perfect the thumb "bounce" you showed. I can do that on one surface but find it hard to move around the kit without wrapping the stick back with the thumb and index finger (such as playing fast 32nd notes around the kit, placing only 2 notes per drum/tom if you know what I mean). Any advise?
1) When playing rimshots with trad grip, it hurts my thumb quite a bit when I hold it further down the sticks where bounce is more optimal. It is so even when I loosen my grip upon impact. Is this pain part of learning the grip? Also, I find it really hard to keep a steady rimshot backbeat. Upon impact, where about is the stick under your thumb? Mine seems to be where the thumb joint (or knuckle) is. If its at the webbing, it hurts more.
Does anyone know how long it takes to get used to traditional grip? Or a range, or how long it pretty much took them. To the point where it was comfortable i mean
You should give it a couple of weeks of serious practice. As in most things, if you already play great even though your technique isn't perfect, it hardly matters. Few of the greats had perfect technique. But if you discipline yourself to learn traditional then it might become a strong part of your skill set as a drummer.
I feel somewhat comfortable with trad grip however when I use skinnier sticks I have a hard time keeping it from sliding around in my fulcrum. He says to hold it delicately but It wants to slide out if I do. It feels uncomfortable if I grip it tight (not choked though, just tight).
Any help/advice? I've watched several videos on trad and I have the finger positions down and the motions.
Probably not holding the stick properly. Traditional grip is very detailed and requires constant critiquing(If you learn to use it properly and to it's full potential)
Anyway, if you want to learn it's best to have someone point out your flaws, before they become a habit.
Wally is the MAN. I had the priveledge of taking lessons from Wally and he rounds you off like no other teacher. Very patient and just the coolest cat around.
how far from the butt of the stick should the back of your hand be?

KJS72 2 years ago
if traditional has more range then why not play both hands like that?
digitaldown 2 years ago
I personally like trad grip better because of the better pivot I can get out of it. I'm more sluggish with match grip.

Traditional and matched grip are two COMPLETELY different worlds. Any grips has it's advantages/disadvantages.
I prefer traditional because of the feeling.
Only fags use because of the "style" factor.

ummm. how about modern day snares? i never heard anything about this version. when i play. i dont pump my arms. they stay prety still and my wrist does the work.
MHSsnaredrum 2 years ago
It all depends on preference or your instructor. My instructor has us use both wrist and arm. Wrist adds control. Pumping the arm adds more body and volume and creates a more "full" sound.

The traditional, AKA correct, grip allows for drawing different tones and sounds out of the drum. For those who value musicality and the tones of the drums this is the way to go. If you just want to pound on them, then I guess these notions do not matter.
drdee51 2 years ago
I hate all this traditional grip nonsense. you can get just as many tones and variations with matched.
digitaldown 2 years ago
yup, there are so many amazing drummers that use match. the only reason i ever use traditional is because i'm required to for marching band.

jus sayin, if you can play any oher instrument, you can play the drums too, noooooobs
mojoganjamaster420 1 year ago
@mojoganjamaster420 That is a complete load of shit. I'm in a band with 3 of my close friends, all of them can play there instruments very well and have at least 4 years of experience each, including me. However, there has been several occasions where my band mates play on my drum set and they have had major problems just getting a basic beat down. I can say that playing the guitar requires no skill and anyone can do it, but that doesn't make it right, now does it?
gamekidillon12 1 year ago 2
@mojoganjamaster420
sorry, i'm with gamedillon12 on this. being able to play one instrument is no guarantee of having the skills to play drums. the skills on, say, guitar do not transfer into a set of skills relevant to playing drums. skills for viola do transfer to violin and vice versa; the skill sets for organ and piano are slightly different, but contain sufficient similarity for transfer. likewise oboe and clarinet. 'any other instrument' to drums is not a likely transfer.

I got one question:
The famous drummer Virgil Donati uses trad. grip...does he hold the normal way or in some special way? hes famouys for hes exetremely powerful and fast left hand, even if he use traditional grip.
888erkan888 2 years ago
he's fast because he practices with it a lot, neither grip is superior, what matters is how skilled you are at using the grip that you prefer
houseofburn 2 years ago 2
well matched IS superior actually. Even Virgils says so himself, if he could start over again he would go for matched grip becouse its stronger, easier to develope and makes more sense anyway. I agree.
He says you use more muscles with the matched grip in your arm which makes it less hard to play for a long time.
888erkan888 2 years ago
they all say the same thing.

great video, sir. helped out a lot with my grip
Drowbot 2 years ago 2
with the traditional grip, when your left hand makes a stroke, do the supporting fingers let go of the stick when rebound occurs? Kind of like how you showed in the beginning with your hand open making single strokes.

hey - do you mean it slides out from the fulcrum to where the butt of the stick is sliding down to the thumb/index finger or what do do you mean?
Gretsche87 2 years ago
2) I am trying to perfect the thumb "bounce" you showed. I can do that on one surface but find it hard to move around the kit without wrapping the stick back with the thumb and index finger (such as playing fast 32nd notes around the kit, placing only 2 notes per drum/tom if you know what I mean). Any advise?
Thanks in advance

Hi Wally,
Thanks for the video. Just 2 questions:-
1) When playing rimshots with trad grip, it hurts my thumb quite a bit when I hold it further down the sticks where bounce is more optimal.

To the point where it was comfortable i mean
jiggles020 3 years ago

Gretsche87 3 years ago
This grip is a bit painful for me ://
amjan 3 years ago
Probably not holding the stick properly. Traditional grip is very detailed and requires constant critiquing(If you learn to use it properly and to it's full potential)
Anyway, if you want to learn it's best to have someone point out your flaws, before they become a habit.
