  • My dad is only 40 but he too was slapped with a cane in school when he was young. I don't think there was anything wrong with that. The adults today certainly don't seem affected by their childhood punishments.

  • hahaha i love the "again" story hahaha

  • i like these videos, they interesting

  • How many offensive, self-absorbed rants separate the anti-social nuisance from the dangerous psychopath?

  • actually anti-social IS the proper term for psychopaths...

  • What has that got to do with this video?

  • Sweet :)

  • i think the reason its so interesting is because life is so different now and its hard to imagine it ever being like that/ its like REALLY / wow was it really like that. i think the funny thing is that when i was a kid i thought that in the olden days everything was in black and white lol colour only came inn to life later on lol xxxx love from kazb25 xxxx

  • rules do kids today know what they are now thats something foreign too them lol

  • Apparently so is grammar...

  • Great stories.

  • WE LOVE YOU GETRIATIC! you're an inspiration to all of us younger generations!

  • Add1ction, we don't need to make ya look like idiots, hahah

  • I woke up near the end to catch the music.

  • your amazing geriatric =)

  • Keep on making these vids they rule

  • Thank you for your wonderful videos, how good of you to pass on your life experiences to us all. So many grand parents are missing in todays families as we have all become dis-functional (not my words) in one way or another. Long may you live, thanks again...by the way, i too was hit on the hand with a ruler for throwing a snowball during break time in my primary school when i was 9 years old! i love blues ...was brought up on it, my father loved it!

  • does anyone really care?

  • apparently thousands of people care considering the number of honors this guy has gotten

  • Oh, Lightin' Hopkins..He took a Japanese line and used it, I believe. "If you don't like my peaches, don't you shake my tree. I don't like that woman, but she sure likes me." I'm writing this from Texas, not Houston, but San Antonio. I can hardly wait for my move to my mother's, where I hope to be able to make videos and comments that are as C.S. Lewis coined "Till We Have Faces". tanya

  • well its agen for us Americans, so...

    Anyway great video again!

  • Its again way to make us americans look like fucking idiots

  • OH my GOD! I had followed this when you were on 10 or so... and now you're on 42! WOWEE. (Now I'll never catch up.)

  • I think your a ledgend Peter :)

  • Thanks Peter, Love lightning hawkins music he influenced Taj Mahal another one of my favourite blues musicians.

  • agen agen!!!! pardon my pun...i would post a video respeonse but i dont know how people would interprit wateva i say anyway mate i digress... to be honest i think schools are no way strict enough and thats coming froma 14 year old write back when you can sir

  • i went to school in the 80s i like the story but cant relate thanks for all the info anyway

  • another brilliant video peter! and i love that song!

  • Great video. And I'm so happy you picked a Texas bluesman for your closing music! (I'm in Texas myself and grew up on a mixture of Delta Blues, Texas Blues and Dixieland Jazz.)

  • Another great video, Peter. Calm, understated and insightful, as always. Thank you, again (and like all Americans, I pronounce it the way you did as a child). :)

  • Good stuff peter !

  • I just found your videos today and they seem pretty KOOL!

  • I am fairly new to YouTube. Love your stories and insight. I just had to make you my first subscription.

  • You tell me you like the John Lee Hooker on my video and then you have the, ahem, noive to play that amazing Lightinin' Hopkins in yours? You're a wicked old man. And you've now forced me to find an even, how can I say it?, "badder" blues number than this one for my next clip! The battle is joined!!

  • Was anyone else expecting the meaning of life revealed with #42? :)

  • Good day all. Isn't Peter the best!? Loved the blues choice Peter, I imagined myself in a smokey little bar in New Orleans. I was an art teacher for 22 years, we weren't allowed to ever touch a child, but I do remember 'escorting' a 6' young man down to the office for some infraction or other, he was howling all the way but I held the back of his collar firmly (I'm only 5'2"). He later became a regular visitor to my classroom. Cheers, Twinks

  • great video and great song. thank you peter.

  • i havent been on youtube for long but you were one of the first vids i checked out. you are so cool, i have told all my friends/family about you and now were all addicted. we love your stories and look forward to many more. cheers. p.s. hope i have the memory and stories of my life like you seem to have of yours

  • i love ur voice, its so soothing

  • you r weird ya know that?

  • That druid in Neverwinter nights 2,whats her name and what does she do?

  • yep, thats how it was those days, what has happened to the world now, kids have no respect for adults and the government is all wrong. I really don't know what is going to happen in the future, but bring back the good ole days, thats what i say! I enjoy watching your videos and listening to your stories of your past.

  • Every time I see a new video from you, it makes my day! Thank you. I love to listen to you and the music is always great. (I thought I heard the mule ran away with the "wood")

  • Thank you for your response to my video response, Peter. I'm honored that you responded, and am even more honored, and thankful, to be the recipient of your wisdom, stories and, ultimately, your respect. It's nice to have you out there. No that I am, as well.

  • (Cont.) You had to watch his body language to tell when the cord change would come and for sure sometimes be wrong. Then he'd be noticeably irritated.

I'd like to hear about your motorcycle days myself. I'm only ten years younger than you are so I also grew up in the era of corporal punishment but my impression is that it was much easier on this (US) side of the pond.

  • Glad to see you like Lighting -- one of my favorites. When he used to tour in the 50s & 60s he did not travel with a band. He'd pick up a bass player and a drummer locally. I had a friend who played base and would be picked up. As I'm sure you've noticed Mr. Hopkins would put in extra bars and part bars as the spirit moved him and he did not do this consistently, sometimes the spirit moved and sometimes it didn't. Made him very hard to accompany.

  • amen! I agree with you. I remember a half dozen spankings or so, but looking back I deserved every one of them. Kids today do not respect authority.

  • aww ^^ poor you the again thing!

  • Correction to your example:

If I see a mule run away with the "corn"

    Should be...

"If I see a mule run away with the "world"

You are a joy to watch and listen to. Keep the videos comimg!

  • You're fantastic. Thank you.

  • I love this man.

  • no. they are not. I don't understand why you even bother to watch.

  • This is an outstanding series! Well done and thank you.

  • sharing similar schooldays of being lefthanded & having to twist my hand backwards, the teacher would whack the backside with the metal part of a wooden ruler. She'd grab my hand place it straight,100's-o- times til I finally learned. All these years later, a few remaining marks, hand straight,my paper is nearly UPSIDE-DOWNThanks Peter for your stories.I told my mom b.1927 of you.Between both life is full of stories.Yours I've only heard once.

  • I realize many young people will read this and think I am one who doesn't like teaching, but if the truth be known to all of you, we teachers are getting out of the profession much earlier now because of the rabid disrespect and foul language that we have to put up with daily. It's just not worth it. Bravo Peter, at least you learned in time that teachers really do care about their responsibilities

  • You are so right, MusicManlnSC. I don't know how teachers survive (in some instances, don't) being in the classroom with the same bunch of punks day and day out.

  • thats kinda sad i don't like punshiment like that and now adays kids don't get punished like that they get detention(i think thats better than whippings) and when my parents talk about how strict they had it when they where kids its realy sad thats why im thankful for nice parents and plus i love that blues song it rocks!

  • you rebel you..

  • I laughed when you told about reading the passage 'again.' I was saddened by the look in your eyes as you reflected upon the lessons of corporal punishment. But my spirits were lifted when you expressed your affinity for the 'mule'... Thanks for an enjoyable journey.

  • Nice vid.

  • 42 is the answer to life, the universe, and everything!

  • I thought they'd forgotten the question by the time they got that far? :)

  • Kewlios

  • It is amazing how different school was back then. Of course, I've heard many stories from my own grandpa about spanking and paddling in schools and I agree that was too far but now even the students can file a lawsuit against the teachers and I just think that it's too much

    Take care,

    TJ

  • a bit difrent from what we have to day,,,not much respect. and I you even touch them whith your breath...they kike you out.

  • Hugs to all Peter thats what we all need watch LONG BEACHIN WITH MO here on u tube.-)

  • rudeness punished by pain and punishment? Well i think we need to re-enforce these rules. Especially around here. Thanks for the story. ^.^ I enjoy them everytime

  • I enjoyed this very much!

  • I loved the story and the song :)

  • lol I love it, and it is how you pronounced it the first time.

  • YAWN fuck of old ya old twat no1 likes ya videos there so boring

  • you are not respectful!

  • You're so shallow... If you don't like his videos than don't watch them. There's NO need to bash this guy's vids.

  • aidan, what goes around comes around. You're an infant but I bet you are far far far far far more boring now and always will be, even when you finally grow up.

  • Great video Peter.

  • Great job Peter, I remember gettin beaten in the 60s in primary school by teachers ah those were the days!

Have you checked out Earl Okin great blues singer songwriter/comedian here on you tube. he's great LIVE.

  • geriatric was in the magazine flip side- saw it in school today

  • You could always, you know, not watch them. But hey, being an irreverent prick is cool, too, I guess.

  • There were no flowery words in my household. If I didn't listen to my mother it was the pancake turner or whatever was close by that landed on me.

  • shut up. this is a repeat

  • Great, Peter, you made my day (again, er...agaiiiiin)!

  • Hi Peter, I've actually just finished my A levels at Ciy of Norwich school, amazing how the buildings are still the same, despite them now starting a huge expansion where the boys are standing in the picture. Get back to me if you wish to compare then and now at all.

    Richard

  • Keep it up Peter (sorry i used a cliche, maybe i should say something more constructive, but i cant think of what to say)

  • Pink Floyed! "Wrong do it again!"

    LOL

    funny ;)

  • pink floyd. this is the way you write it. ""see the flashing of the kingfisher splashing into the water."" grandchester mallows

  • I find it weird that he didn't tell you what the problem was, in regards to the pronunciation. It surely seems natural to at least tell the child what he had done.

  • I don't think I would take it very well if my child was being hit by a stranger. I'd probably hit him back, pretty hard.

  • heheheh! LOL thats so cool dude! good reply man!

    Thumbs up :))

let the teacher tell me whats wrong and I will do the punishment for the school. ehh - back in thoses days many ways were different. oh -well

  • Enjoy your stories Peter. Wish you had your own radio show!

  • Oh Peter, thank you again! To find a new video of yours is such a blessing;I too cherish each moment. The content is always pleasurable, encouraging and informative. There can never be enough contact with you! Keep the vids coming, my dear. Melinda

  • Peter is great! I feel the way you do psalm8510 :)

    Sweet!

  • Hi. How do you create the cross? With your keyboard? Glad you feel as I do about Peter...

  • ALT 0134

  • amazing song. You have great taste in music.

  • Corporal punishment, meted out fairly and impartially and in porportion to the offense is certainly immediate "feedback" and quite a positive tool when it comes to shaping behavior. Reinforcement is seldom necessary. One further comment: You played my favorite Lightnin' Hopkins track. Keep up the great work ... I enjoy our 'visits'.

  • wow you are like my grandpa

  • Your wonderfully subtle use of understatement makes your monologues all the more engaging, quite aside from how interesting the stories themselves are. Hugely enjoyable once again.

  • you are good!

  • Hi Peter: Your story made me respond with my own experiences during those years. I posted my video for you as well. You may get a kick out of it since it talks about a boy your age in aGerman school in 1933 and after. Enjoyed your video as always. Regards from bernie1927

  • Thanks for sharing your experiences and your music! I very much look forward to more of these wonderful videos in the future.

  • excellent music - again! thanks geriatric1927

  • These days that kind of punishments and discipline wouldn't be aloud. Personally I believe that is a good way of putting young people in their place. It always worked for me. Great Video and wonderful music.

  • I totally disagree with your opinion, thank God it is not up to you to choose our children education. I am not meaning to let them do what they want but phisical punishment is not the proper way to correct their behaviour.

  • I understand where you are coming from, and it does seem what he had done to him was over the line, no doubt. But types of forcible punishment physical or not other can be quite helpful to correct the youth. Its been a driving force in raising some wonderful people. But I do understand where your concern comes in. Many people physically hurt the youth and that is a horrid thing. The line is thin and people are crazy.

  • I agree with you, it worked for some people and it didn't for some others but I am afraid noone can judge where the line is or wether there is a line. My advice, don't use phisical punishment at all.

  • You make a great point. If one doesn't know where the line is (which seems to be unknowable) then one should err on the side of no physical punishment. Thanks, I'll have to spend some time thinking about this issue and maybe reevaluate my stand on it.

  • In the 60s about 4th or 5th grade. A friend of mine in did something not uncommon. His gift was art and he was very very good at it. Drew something depicting the teacher. I remember it very clear because, he is Italian and when the Nun hit his hands, way to hard with that same kind of stick pointer. In a natural but very loud native Tongue, fired back a good lashing. The whole class not knowing what was said, started to laugh and because of the humor of it she let it alone at that. 

  • Wonderful !

  • i wanted to post on the most recent video to let you know that you have old balls. but other than that i really enjoy your videos. keep up the "old ball" work. great job.

  • This was a great story. My grandpa always tells me those kinds of stories all the time. I like listening. Anyways, love this blues song. I'm from Texas, so I've definetly heard it.

You are really cool. Keep up the wonderful videos.

    Hilary

  • Thanks for that vintage material.

  • Keep up the great videos!

  • OUCH! The Lutheran school I went to when I was a kid also believed in Corporal punishment (and this was in the 1980's). They used a thick wooden paddle with holes bored through it... used to knock me to my knees. I'd be punished for things as innocuous as questioning the Bible... or taking care of some kittens that had been born under the Parish house... or just for being late.

  • I am a college grad but can not now nor never could spell. Once in 7th grade I my arse hit three times with a pretty good long wooden paddle because I missed too many reassigned words in a spelling test. Even at 12 years old I knew that was wrong and there was some block I had about spelling. Resent it to this day forty some years later.

  • oww that sounded painful luckily theres none of that junk in schools today. lol

  • Nice video. Great song. Maybe you could post the music over at that other place. It would sound so good. Thanks again.

  • I remember my dad telling me that he got in trouble alot at school and he used to get whipped across the hand with a leather belt.

  • Also, I find it ironic how you criticize his so-called lack of content, yet you have a video called "A long and pointless rant about absolutely nothing."

  • One of the problems with the sort of corporal punishmentyou describe is that generally the lesson learned by the child is not to be polite or respect one's elders, but that might is right and that the way to solve problems is through violence. Lessons which, sadly, those children will all too often pass on to their own offspring later in life.

  • great job

  • I always enjoy your videos. And I love the music you put up, not a bad song in the lot. There was a resurgence of the blues in the 60s when you guys in England brought over all our American blues artists to play there. That's how I discovered the blues...via some of the British rock bands like The Yardbirds and John Mayall and the Stones.

    Lovely as usual. thanks.

  • Its a great attitude you have towards life:)sorry all that happened back then..do you ever post any pictures of yourself when you were younger?Im curious to see what you looked like...Great job with the music! I love the BLUES!

  • Hi Peter,

Terrible the way children and young where punished before, you can get respect and dicipline with other measures than violence, eventhough it may take a bit more effort reaching in to some people.

Love your blues music and to listen to your experiences.

    girl 23,Norway

  • I recognised the CNS, but I went to King Edward (CNS overspill) and we got caned across the backside (six of the best). I don't know which is worse.

  • xoxoxoxo

  • This was a great post and sad to say, those types of punishments were still common when I was the same age in the 90's. Love hearing your stories and the music was top notch. Thank you.

  • salam...peace

you tell your experience and give a little bit of advice.

some experience some advice and a very good ones.

    very interesting..keep it up.salam...peace

  • " i wonder how does it feel knowing you only got subscribers because youre old, and not because of the content?

cant you realize all this people just have pity on you. "

what an idiot, I watch the video because this man has lived 5 times more than me and this means he knows alot more, alot alot alot more, I find it interesting what he has to say.

  • Maybe you should contact a publisher, mainstream/independent and write your memoirs (just to support the videos). Then maybe when it's done, you could read segments for us everyday. Thanks for the videos.

  • Love the music!! Love the stories! you are the best!

  • One of your videos is the 1st on this site that I ever saw. I enjoy your expressions. I had a similar experience in 1st grade. Being a talkative, antsy kid, the teacher thought I was being disrespectiful & whacked me w/her yard stick across the knuckles. I think there might be a better way to teach a kid respect. Your song made me smile. Thanks

  • Enjoyed that Peter, thanks for the full song!!! I have Hopkins, can't say i remember that one song. Thanks.

  • WOW! you must be really jealous!!!! But I guess you could be young and just stupid, which of course you will grow out of, maybe.

  • A-GEN>A-GAIN

  • The One And Only.

  • rofl you are a stupendous douche. Of course you're absolutely right, because you can speak on behalf of all 36000+ subscribers, right?

  • Haha, you have the nerve to give that loser the time of day. Peter is smart, and his videos are enthralling. Anybody who objects to that is just plain, old, jealous; and pathETIC... discrediting an old man like that over the internet.

Don't give him the time of day!

  • Keep on keepin' on Peter. Lightnin' Hopkins is a great musician.

  • hello! very interesting indeed.. i just want to say that in the last two incidents you deserved the punishment from the headmaster and from your mother but not in these ways :) about the song it's great i like blues too.. but why you left the screen black, why you don't put some pictures or something like that?

    wish you always good days..

    mazin

  • I remember being threatened with "the strap" for being slow in my school work back in 1968. Never did get it, though - but got sent to the principal's office.

The word around school was to put a hair across your palm before you got the strap, as they had to stop when they drew blood, and the hair helped that happen.

My dad had a similar thick ruler/stick broken over his back once by his teacher - in the 40's.

Thank goodness this is not allowed anymore!

  • I enjoy listening to your stories! :)

  • Just discovered you're videos today, and let me tell you, you're awesome. I'll be waiting for your next posting!

  • Peter you bring so much to my days, my days and my childrens days. They love to listen to you as well. I cherish every video you make.

    Peace,

    Lisa

  • Thanks for the Lightnin' Hopkins tune. I should pull that album out soon. Reminds me of my dad. He loved old country and blues. Another good one is Jimmy Reed, if you like harmonica.

  • Oh man. I could never last in a school like that. Honestly, I don't think anyone today would have been able to make it in one of those schools back then because nowadays the administration isn't all-powerful. I don't think I'd be able to hold myself back after getting hit with a cane or ruler over the hands. Nice video, love hearing your voice again

  • In Jamaica, here, we have to last it, even if we don't want to, because corporal punishment is allowed. I totally can understand where Peter is coming from.

  • You are so awesome. where was ET?

  • Love all your vids peter

  • YOURE THE COOLEST!

  • Interesting and informative as always Peter. Thankyou. hugs, Chris

  • Very interesting part of your history, and probably that of a few others.

  • In the old days they used similar methods to punish the kids at school here in germany as far as it is told to our generation.

  • I love all your videos! I have spent the last few days watching as many as I could. Top job!

  • Good old school days... you hate it at the time but you always look back on it with fond memories!

  • Great as always Peter..thanks again.

  • When i think about that time i realise the Nazis,i mean the german soldiers was the toguhest people ever to hjave lived on this earth.

They held up 2 years against USA,ENGLAND and RUSSIA.

    FIghting at two fronts,unbelivble.

Those fucking people at that time was crazy.

Btw my grandpa shoot 8 communist and spitted at 7 he captured.

  • You have to work on the quality of you're video content man. Proof, 10,000 views per video with 36,000 subscribers. Maybe put some thought into the content. Wish you well.

  • Nice video, keep doing you're thing.

  • Watching your vids has got me more and more into blues lol. I used to be into blues rock like the rolling stones and stuff. In your earlier vids, I'd have turnt off during the music. But the last 2 or 3 times I've listened to music with my window minimised, whilst I get on with overdue college work.

  • Another awesome video. I love listening to your stories.

  • RESPECT MY AUTHORITIE!!!!

  • respect ma authoritah

  • good video once again

  • E.T. was quiet today. I hope he's feeling OK.

  • Interesting. :)

  • hello peter
