Since Airbus introduced its revolutionary A300 and pioneered FBW and the use of composites, all Boeing models were just copies of Airbus design.

They wanted to introduce some (actually minor) innovation with the Dreamliner. But the 787 is the next Spruce Goose.

Boeing suffered from almost bankruptcy during their years of making a biggest planes. Airbus has also walked down the same path. Airbus owes more than a billion in debt making the A380.

787 dreamliner will be the first airliner to use an all composite fuselage, this means they no longer need to worry about corrosion. which means they can run a higher humidity cabin. low humidity cabin air is a contributing factor in jetlag. basically it means more passenger comfort.

The DC-10-10 had problems because they were rushed into service, but the -30 was improved infact, Northwest just retired their DC-10's two years ago, no problems. Fed Ex I think still flies 10's with no problems. Airlines in the 70's were bypassing stringent maintenance procedures and Mcdonnell Douglas warned AA about removing engines and pylons. Metal will fall out of an engine due to improper maintenance procedures.
