@sidivephilippines Not only that it was banned by the BBC and this was in the times when the only music shows were Top of The Pops and The Old Grey Whistle Test, so the song got very little publicity plus they weren't very well known (they later did appear on the OGWT but the song had already reached no.1 by that stage)

If you are too young to never have been to a Specials concert (especially back in the early 80's) then you missed out on the best live band ever and being part of the audience at a Specials concert is something you never forget... :-)

To really get a feel for just how great these concerts and the atmosphere at them was, try and get a hold of the movie "Dance Craze", it's 90 mins of live concert footage of all the great Ska bands of the era and is simply magic... :-)

It's obvious your too young and weren't around in 79 and the early 80's when The Specials were at their height.

Terry Hall (the guy your talking about) was very deliberate about how he appeared on stage, it was all part of the message of the group in a time when they were trying to get across a strong political and social message to the government of the day who were doing their best to destroy the hopes of the youth of that era... ;-)

Terry Hall never "mumbled" his words he was a genuinely nervous performer going on stage but he was very, very clear in his vocals (one of the reasons why you don't need scrolling lyrics on Specials videos) perhaps you need to get your ears checked out. :-)

Has anyone heard of Gentleman's Dub Club? I saw them live a while back and it really reminded me of the energy and vibe the Specials had, but with a modern edge to it. I'm going to see them at Guildford Boileroom in May. I think you can still get tickets from their website? It looks like they're touring all round the UK so check them out if you get a chance, I can't remember the last time I skanked that hard at a live gig.

Saw The Specials play under Skeggy pier in '78 just after they did Sight and Sound In Concert on BBC when the crowd invaded the stage... so we did the same from the first number to the end. The best gig I've ever been to - so far.

What a band, tighter than a nun's grommet. At the time, all the more powerful against a background of punk and post punk, much of which was barely listenable. A very hard act to follow imo and we were dismayed when 2-Tone kind of fell by the wayside much too early. Good times.
