@TheREDRUM720 You probably already got one but i would go with the 51 over the kimura 5. I find the kimura a bit harder to flip because of its " heftiness" but its still a very nice knife to use daily. Kimuras are sexy but benchmades are better flippers!

Hi Calvin, i was looking for some available Benchmade balisongs in my country and i found that there are only the Model 51 and 42, they both look great and i plan on getting them both eventually but i could use your personal opinion to help me with this dilema on which i should get first, i plan on both flipping and using them every day

does the 51's "spring" locking mechanism deteriorate after a while? I see that the liner gets bent which creates the spring force so over time if I don't use the knife for a while will the liner be permanently adjusted to that position hence losing the "spring"?

@abowl0frice Well I have had it for just about a year and so far there is no difference from the moment I got it. Although I almost never latch mine up just because, like you said, It does put a lot of tension on the liners.

@RockMySrocks The 32 and 51 are similar in that the screws come very loose and after tightening become loose again. To fix this you need to buy a torx screwdriver set, (which you seem to have) and loctite blue 242. loctite is a liquid that is put on the thread of the screws and when applied the screws will stay at the tightness they are set at. i loctited mine in april 2010 and it hasnt loosened up a single bit since then. As for your latch, Ill have to check out your vid and ill get back to you

thanks for the comment sfshrimp, To answer your question, the 42 has been completley discontinued, so you will likley be unable to find any stores that may have a one last 42. The only way to find one would be a private sale on a knife forum or something, so yah id say 95 percent of stores that sold the 42 in the past will not have them in the present so I hope that answers your question.

@sfshrimp The cheapest places to get balisongs are at online dealers, I think if its at a real location (or retail store) the store is required by benchmade to sell it at full price. I am 90% sure balisongs are illegal in california, but dont quote me on that, It would be best to look it up somewhere, I tried doing a google search and nothing was too clear, but From what I got out of it is that they are illegal in california.

Also, I really hope they release something like the 42 again, but with the rounded spine and zen pins.

I just hope they dont try and release a 42 style balisong in the gold class that would be way too expensive for me to buy as a flipper.

Its not like I dont want full Ti handles like my 42, but for what it is, the rounded spine and the zen pins are awesome. If the 42 could have had the same rounded spine, ti handles, the zen pin, and even the new latch system, it would be beyond all expectations :p

Yeah, I love the rounded spine. Probably my favorite feature on the 51, although the Zen pins are probably the biggest improvement.

I do like the latch, but sometimes it gets locked in the open position and can get in the way. I think I'm just used to the 42, but I like that the latch can swing free :p
