So many poor decisions made in this video. Hope this driver has become a little more professional, and operates his vehicle with a lot more respect when going down the road.
1. Insurance. Companies can get a discount on their insurance if they govern their trucks to go slower. Which is legitimately reasonable.
2. Fuel cost. Going slower in your top end uses less engine rpms per mph, thus saving fuel. When a truck drives 4,000 miles a week, going from 6mpg to 6.5mpg, you save about 50 gallons of fuel a week, at that rate. 50 gallons times $4 a gallon (for me) is $200 a week, on one truck.
i started with Central refer, its just as bad as swift, and yes it was a stepping stone, did one year with a perfect record and moving on to a better job was easy easy, now i have a great job .. take gu151 advice he knows what the hell hes talking about.
SWIFT is a fucking joke !!! No talent Bastards is what most of them are. I will say though that there are good and bad in every company though. I started at SWIFT at 21 and now I am a independent O/O with 2,000,000+ accident free miles "knock on wood". I was a rare SWIFTY I guess. I washed my truck every other day (my money) and I took care of it. I never in the 3 years there had a breakdown. The Swift shops knew me and they took care of me because they knew I took care of my equipment.

Swift is a labor mill and a disgrace to the industry. Their moto is "pay as little as possible, treat drivers like shit, and if they quit then we will just bring more unsuspecting trucking students in to replace them". Most of their human resource / training / dispatch employees are under qualified trash off the local streets who love acting like they are doing YOU a favor. TIP TO ALL NEW STUDENTS, FIND A DIFF CARRIER THAT OFFERS TRAINING. (Schneider, USexpress, or countless others). NO SWIFT
That's the damn truth. I'll never forget the feeling I had the day quit working for Swift. Felt so good to do so. I got sick and tired of the shit head planners, micro management, and all the small battles I had to fight on a constant basis.
@gu151 i graduated from trucking school in september and we hadd all the major compnies come in to try and get up to work for them shcnider, tmc, swift, bowman, all of them. they blow so much smoke up ur ass, im glad i didnt take the first companie to offer me a job i found the right one took just about two months but im glad home every night no milage pay, its hr pay benifites out the ass.
You people on here bashing the pay rate and stuff at swift, where the hell else are you going to get 5 pay raises in the first year; good affordable benefits, a nice truck, and run in a comfort zone of your choice just after driver training??? NO where else in this industry thats where. there a good company except for the ones that should'nt be driving rigs in the first place; think about it.
@snowman8983 LOL, bullshit. You weren't around when they governed their trucks at 60 mph and on top of the slow trucks and reduction in pay because you can't max out your miles in any given day, the company did shave miles off trips. Benefits are nothing to right home about. Show me an insurance plan which pays 100%. 80% 20% PPO or 90% 10% you are still paying something out of pocket on top of the crappy pay you are receiving. They are not a good company and will ding your DAC.
@snowman8983 the real story on Swift is that they do miss your expenses on every other trip if you are not looking carefully when you submit expenses and not everyone gets adequate miles or good take home pay. They have also failed in certain business ventures in the past due to their piss poor handling of certain specialized divisions (ask about Volvo Driveaway in Dublin, VA) sometime at their Greer terminal and find out if that division is still running. To my understanding it isn't.
@snowman8983 how much does Swift charge the newbies for the driving academy and is that realistic as to how much money you are making in the 1st month on your own? In any given year starting out I cleared in the low $20,000. That is shit pay for work put in and what one has to put up with out their. Perhaps a starting salary of $30k is more appropriate for the sacrifice of a life and hardship said driver is making. By the mile is not very profitable anymore. I'd stay away from Swift LOL!
First, they will pay you enough to start that you won't NEED 5 raises in a year, if you get 5 raises in a year, you got screwed over 4 times in that year.
Second, they will pay benefits, and not just offer you an aflac plan with a decent price tag and lousy coverage.
The trucks are nice when new, it's the drivers that they put in them that turn them into junk, but ANY regional carrier will let you run "in a comfort zone of your choosing"
Never drove for Swift but you're doing a good thing by representing one of the biggest trucking companies in the U.S. that usually get a bad rep. Like I've always said, some of the drivers who've bad mouthed companies like Swift and Schneider probably wouldn't even get accepted cuz they couldn't trip plan or work a qual-com.
@throttlehard sorry to prove you wrong but I laste over two years with Swift and was smart enough to walk after the bull shit I put up with. As far a trip planning goes, when you are in a governed truck , that can affect your trip planning. Yes I could work a qual-com as well and I was accepted up to the point I wised up and understood that Swift ripped me and countless other drivers off. Swift does have a bad rep and there are just not enough miles to go around.
Well, sorry it didn't work out for you with Swift. I don't work for them nor am I trying to advertise for them. Here's the point I was trying to make:
Just because "Jim Boy" drives for Joe Blows Trucking (who operates a company of 5 Peterbuilts), doesn't mean Jim Boy is doing any better. Fact is: No matter where you go or what company you are with, there will always be issues that need to be dealt with.
@throttlehard I'm just happy I stayed safe and survived the east coast driving. Really wasn't that difficult once you new the areas. Only thing I ever hated was being governed at 60 mph. Beyond that I left for good after trying out their Volvo drive away program in Dublin, VA. I was doing one way loads into Canada and it was about a 1-2 day turn around for the next load (no flat pay on the return trip) so I just wasn't clearling much and there was no profit in staying.
@throttlehard my last trucking job that paid well was season work hauling the U.S. mail between annexes. As a contractor for a private carrier, I made near $2,000 in about a little over two weeks time. I do still mantain my CDL to this day though the problem I have with an industry is that some companies won't credit you with time already put in and that is just messed up.
"smaller companies paying well" is a steaming pile of lies. I'm working for a smaller company (less than 50 trucks) and making less than what I made straight out of school. This has become a minimum wage job. I lived on the road 4 weeks at a time (for a company with less than 100 trucks) for $25K a year (after taxes) in a world where my rent alone in $1000 a month and I was never there. If I worked just 40 hours a week at minimum wage I would have come out at over $20K.
@RyanS6759 Swift drivers work for peanuts, can't blame them for not caring ya know. Its really not the drivers fault, its the entire company. The smaller companies pay more which is why the drivers take pride in their rides, with chrome and lights etc..
@bigredi444 Chrome and lights? Then buy a truck and chrome it and light it yourself. Don't beat up on the company truck because it doesn't have enough chrome or lights. That's bull sh..
@RyanS6759 I used to work for swift, and I saw SO MANY trucks that have been "fixed" at TA. They are a joke, you should be embarrassed to admit working at TA, like I'm embarassed to admit I worked for swift!
This guys was just an Idiot and should be slapped around for being so ignorant but now I see where he got that from...Look at his Mom and dad(Mom and dad are blood related)..Just another dick head trying to give a company a bad name..
this guy is yes another swift driver See What I can Fuck up Today. He is driving like an idiot and exiting the truck the wrong way mr not safe swift driver give it up and dont drive another truck till you can grow up.
i thought the swift way was the wrong way dude work for a company that isnt known for crappy drivers. And stop flooring it in the dirt lot it just helps prove drivers including me swift drivers are a hazard to all the other drivers on the road
@Trailerrigger Swiftg directly contributes to giving a lot of drivers more crap than they bargained for. Not a professional company as far as I'm concerned.
hmmmm thats odd, stacks arent bent or the mirrors. Fenders and bumper arent caved in. Thats typical for Swift drivers. You must not drive this truck much
i work in swift 4 years now out of syracuse terminal,im home everyday and weekends off. i bring every week $1000 after tax.i dont have to worry about anything other then drive fuel and breakdowns are covered by swift.so i dont know what some of u think but im happy and im planing to stay,u have all benefits health ins,401k,life ins and more,so dont listen what other drivers are saying ...
The way this guy in the video is treating this truck I bet he got fired . If he had to drive that truck after he got through tearing it up he would have probly respected it more. I just hope hes not driving a truck at all. I worked for Swift and I really miss it. Always a steady paycheck and not a bad paycheck at that if ya got out and worked.
@bullhaulin08 He left because he got a job working for a private trucking company making tons more money. Swift was a good "stepping stone" as he put it.
@bullhaulin08 until someone owns a truck youll know what it cost to have equipment and like u say he should of got fired, if u tear it up you park it till fix it no pay check you spend it to get another, you sound like you know what a truck is
@trokeroelinquieto You got that right, I own my own truck and they are not cheap to fix, especially mine because its all heavy spec so its 4 times more expensive than your everyday run of the mill peterbilt or kenworth etc...
@swift99354 I'm very familiar with that DC as well. More than likely you headed back to Jersey after picking up a load there. I've lost track of how many times I've pulled out of there.
@Conraildan I would even be targeting Swift personally. Find a local company that will treat you right. The bigger companies will eat you up and if you are fresh out of trucking school and go with Swift, don't expect a steady paycheck. Good luck.
trucking swift style means you should b backing into something, parked at a truck stop, or driving eight miles under the speed limit right? lol swift sux
@inkfreekk lol perhaps, but ya know what, a lot of ppl just use them as a stepping stone to get into a company they prefer. I never worked for Swift, but was hired by them and turned it down.
@bigredi444 if I might weigh in on the coversation, it is obvious you both were never governed at 60 mph for 2+ years. Yes Swift does suck in more ways than one. Driver retainment obviously hasn't been their target for quite some time.
@inkfreekk lol you do understand the trucks have governors that are usually set at 63 mph right? so there's no way your gonna do 70 mph. but do you really want them going that fast? pulling up to 80,000 pound when the breaks fail isn't good....
@skaterboyfreddie These old volvo's Swift had(04,05,06 models) never had the critical event or traction control crap in them...they sold off all these old volvo's..this one likes like an 05'.
@skaterboyfreddie you will never know what real power is like until you turn those governors all the way up where they are suppose to be. Kind of defeats the purpose of climbing hills efficiently when you are governed like that.
Yeah we stopped at them cuz we were trying to find you. It was funny, your number was written in the bathroom of every one we stopped at. We couldn't believe it. You've really made a name for yourself. I'm happy for you.
He got sick of them screwing him over and costing him money. He works for a private company now (about 6 or 7 drivers) and is making triple what he made at Swift.
atk....its a great vid....but i can't give it 5 stars.....because first off its gerrald, and second off its a swift truck....but great camera work you homo!

@JimNNail1 because Swift governs the trucks to, I believe, 63 mph.

@JimNNail1 2 reasons.

@skaterboyfreddie yeah and governed at 62mph, right??
bigredi444 1 year ago
@skaterboyfreddie you will never know what real power is like until you turn those governors all the way up where they are suppose to be. Kind of defeats the purpose of climbing hills efficiently when you are governed like that.

capecodunderground 2 years ago
Nah he doesn't plow with me. He hauls freight in a nice Peterbilt 379EXH working for a private company (about 6 drivers). He loves it now.
bigredi444 2 years ago
Good! i am glad he is making out well.

fuddmethen 2 years ago
Yeah we stopped at them cuz we were trying to find you. It was funny, your number was written in the bathroom of every one we stopped at. We couldn't believe it. You've really made a name for yourself. I'm happy for you.
bigredi444 2 years ago
why did he leave swift andy?
capecodunderground 2 years ago
He got sick of them screwing him over and costing him money. He works for a private company now (about 6 or 7 drivers) and is making triple what he made at Swift.
