I swear, I watched this episode and I know I can't get this song out of my head lol. Its a really great and I love the muppets so I guess its no surprise
"Maybe it's time to retire this skit and stop spreading the wrong message" Maybe its time you PC armchair experts just stfu and stop trying to ruin a happy childhood tv memory and a joyous piece of puppet theatre. If yer that commited to it, go to India and free them, cause voicing yer troubles with it here is like treating cancer with a Band-Aid. Just put in yer blog that know one reads , or write an innane folk song that touchs nobody but yer sycophantic coffe hose friends. Jackass
Sorry to be a downer here, but isn't anyone else bothered by the fact that this little skit helps perpetuate to children the falsehood that dancing bears are cute & funny when in reality, the "dancing" bears of India and other places are tortured and forced to dance by yanks on ropes cruelly thrust through holes drilled in their noses. Maybe it's time to retire this skit and stop spreading the wrong message.
I'm more bothered by how Randy Newman's song, which I've always seen as somewhat wittily melancholy, is taken at face value as a funny little thing about a bear.
I was hardly aware of the real dancing bears you talk about, but I feel even worse now. Bad Muppets.
This is not an uncommon thing with Randy's song, which are very deceptive and much more multilayered than the average pop song or the average kid's song. Just look at the controversy surrounding "Short People," Randy's biggest hit. The line "It's just amazing how fair people can be" is much too cynical and ironic to be understood by the average child viewer.
None of it matters because this is just a nice light-hearted sketch and shouldn't be taken in any other way.
The whole irony here is Fozzie walks on two feet (which bears, in general, don't). Therefore, this dancing bear is actually nothing spectacular! At the time this was broadcast, the issue you describe was not known.
journeyman47, i would like to point out that fozzie didnt have any holes drilled in his nose. Furthermore, if they had used one of the tortured bears, Scooter would have been shreded
Wow, I never paid attention to that factor when I watched this as a child, mostly because I was already above the age of 2. If any child DID get that message, I would sure hope that their parents brought them up well enough to understand not to take muppets, cartoons and movies and apply it to daily life. There are no holes in Fozzie's nose and I never knew real bears could talk. I WOULD be concerned if in bright letters it said "TORTURE BEARS", but it doesn't.

Hm. Great spelling. "Happy TV memory?" Is that the sum total of your childhood? The muppets? Wonder what kind of upbringing you had. Very innane.
